I'm just re-reading GRRM books and I'm wondering what exactly "The doom of old Valyria" is? It seems to be some natural diseaster, but in fact nobody mention what is happened, and what kind of kingdom was Valyria.
I can't find enough information about Valyrians, may be I missed something.
I think it will be important in time. Any theories?

Good topic.

I don't know any more than you Summer, though I've wondered if it was a natural disaster or some cataclysm that Valyria brought upon itself by it's use of magic.

I origonally imagined it to be something along volcanic lines, ala Atlantis.

The magic part, well, a pyromancer has hinted already that magic is linked to dragons, and we are told that when dragons are caged they never reach their full potential (which is apparently unlimited)

It is interesting that the Targaryen's brought dragons, and came from Valyria. Could dragons had something to do with the disaster?

I really hope we find of about the doom of old Valyria. I'm really interesting in the free city where swords where forged with magic and hammers. As for the destruction I've thought it was a volcano. I've heard others say the people of Valyria brought the doom upon themselves with the over use of magic or pushing the envelop of magic use a bit to much.

Maybe the doom was just a case of inbreeding?

Brother to sister and second cousins..

Ya'll come back to Valyria now, ye hear?

Come and listen to a story about a man named Aegon
A poor Targaryen, like to feed his family bacon,
Then one day he was shooting at some food,
And out of the sky came a flying brood.

Dragons that is, Fire Worms, Uruloki.

Well the first thing you know ol Aegon's a millionaire,
Kinfolk said "Aegon move away from there"
Said "Westeros is the place you ought to be"
So they loaded up the dragon and moved to Casterly.

Rock, that is. Dungeon pools, Kingsguard.

Well now its time to say good by to Aegon and all his kin.
And they would like to thank you folks fer kindly droppin in.
You're all invited back again to this locality
To have a heapin helpin of their hospitality

Fireside that is. Set a spell, Melt your skin off.

Y'all come back now, y'hear?.

PS - Mods, feel free to delete this post if you want.

Boaz, that was, by far, the best post I've seen in the GRRM section :)

Now I challenge you to do the same for the theme tune to Mr Ed :D

Thanks for the positive feedback...

Back on topic, I think we will find out by the end of the series exactly what the cause of Valyria's doom was. I think it may be very important to both the return of the Dragons (and their Targaryens, or is it the other way around?) and the battle between R'hllor and the Other.

In The Clash of Kings prologue it says dragonstone "was the westernmost outpost of the great freehold of Valyria"

In the synopsis of AFFC it says that Valyria was destroyed by the last war involving dragons.

"The last war fought with dragons was a cataclysm powerful enough to shatter the Valyrian peninsula, now a smoking, demon-haunted ruin half drowned by the sea."
