First time reader

Well, I'd suggest 'A Game of Thrones' which is the first in his epic series 'A Song of Ice and Fire'. Three books currently published, with the fourth due in a month or so. If you don't like waiting for the next book, you might like to wait, though. He ain't quick.

Otherwise I'd recommend 'Fevre Dream', probably my fave vampire novel of all time. A bit of a horror-historical mix, it's set on steamboats in the American south in the early 1800's, and gives a new slant to the vampire mythos.

Haven't read a lot of his sci-fi, I'm afraid...

Dying of the Light was pretty good as was some of his Wildcard series, although he only co-wrote a lot of those.
A lot of these are out of print and hard to get these days however.

I would recommend Game of Thrones for a first-timer with George R R Martin. Its certainly his most commerically successful work and easy to get into :)

I just read "Fevre Dream" and it was fantastic!

Any GRRM is good GRRM in my opinion, but I'd have to agree that "A Game of Thrones" is the best place to start.

Or you can read his short story "The Hedge Knight," which is based in the same world as A Game of Thrones. It's a great way to get your feet wet.

Good advice. First thing of his I ever read, and I haven't looked back since. Sometimes, though, I'm not so sure that's a good thing....
