eragon the movie

I knew this was coming but hadn't yet seen this 'teaser'. I must say if the movie quality is as good as the graphic quality (usually not), it should be at least visually stunning. Their smoke/letter e/dragon is quite fascinating, though it does look a bit like a hurricane...

I hope the movie is more interesting than that site :( Despite finding the book a little lacking, I think i'd watch the movie :)

I have heard quite alot about this movie as I have a freind in the cast. She thinks it has every chance at being a great fantasy hit, the actors are really good (Irons, Malkovich, Carlisle etc...) and she felt it worked well when they were shooting. Though there is always that niggling "will it be rubbish like Dungeons and Dragons" feeling. Apparently Saphira is going to be amazing which will really help!

I liked the books and I'd definitely go watch the movies. I am glad fantasy movies are coming out of the closet as it were.

Who knows the movie and the knowledge that the author of the books is a young adult might send more young people down the same path or at least set them reading.

Am definitely looking forward to the movie.

I can't wait, but I'm rather worried... I really hope they don't mess the movie up...

it's just another film im boycotting. *shrug*

and i kinda hope not, nessacat. there has been a big influx, from wha ti can tell, of people who see fantasy films, think it's easy and then try and write a book, basically ripping off what they saw, which then, if they get into print, adds to the rubbish i think is already on the shelves (im fussy) and if they don't, just makes the submission period take even longer. that's my theory, at least. i don't think people should write because they'r einfluenced by a film, or someone elses book. i think they should write cos they have a story to tell. that's sort of one of my complaints about the erragon kid, he didn't seem to have a story to tell, he just took other people's stories and redid them. (in my opinion, of course)

but as long as some people enjoy it, guess it doesn't matter thatn i will be at home grumbling and complaining about it :)

The movie should be fun. After all, the book was written just like a movie. :p

On a side note, has anyone tried to go to Eragonforums.com? I said something about him not being that great of an author in one thread, and they permabanned me. :-(

Remember there have always been hacks writing cheap, ripped-off books but it's our job as dedicated readers to locate them, review them, and get the word out. We got to separate the good from the evil (poorly, written, as it were) and spread the word.

well i do! :) anyone on lj or fantasy writers.org can probably tell you im pretty vocal about my two least favourite writers (goodkind and this eragon kid) doesn't mean i have to pay to see the film tho :)

Though my tongue burns and my soul screams in agony at this, for I truly hate to say anything in defense of either of them, I must say that the eragon kid is far better than Goodkind. At least with Paolini's books you aren't being preached at nonstop.

well, for me it's not his writing that bothers me, tho the fact he was 'influenced' so strongly is a downside, it's mostly how he got into print. im ok with self publishing, im ok with self publishers making it big, if they put the work into it. but i dont think he did! i think it happened because he's young, it's a novelty, because it certainly isn't that his book is any good. and i don't support that sort of thing, the 'cheating.' i guess i have a romantic ideal of the writing world, you work hard, you get good, someone notices you and publishes you. and i know that doesn't happen, that if you're commerical, if you can sell yourself, you get published (like the man who maade a fake dragon in a glass case, claimed it was real and got publicity for his novel, and then got a contract that way) but i just want to avoid books that weren't printed on meriet. it's my jealous petty thing kicking in. i worked hard on mine, i got me a small print dealy. i hope to get bigger one day. i just can't support people who cut corners and got ahead through novelty means, or age and so on.

It'll be interesting to see if the books are better then the movie. :)

I just saw a poster on it at the movie theater this weekend. I'll take the kids when it comes out.

i totally agree. Christopher is very young and has been influenced by many 'Fantacy' books which has intrigued him to write a book of his own. His work has a good background story but it is a copy of many fantacy books that i have read.

I was very disappointed about the movie. It shows no information about many facts and skips many important facts that make eragon appealing. i just hope this movie doesnt put people off the books

I haven't seen it yet but I will. There are some clips on YouTube and the RottenTomatoes site, and I laughed through all of them. If nothing else, I'm sure the film will be...entertaining. :D

One thing that irks me about the film is its lack of loyalty to the book (for better or worse). It smacks too much of 'Cover the tracks, quick! Do something to make this look less like LOTR!' - Arya the elf (if she can be called that) is strawberry blonde instead of having the raven hair Paolini was constantly eulogizing about, and doesn't even have pointed ears. The Urgals are not large hideous monsters but, well, men with facepaint.

As derivative as the book was, I'd have preferred it if the film was more loyal to its source material. The changes make it seem cheap and rushed to me.

I expect I shall take the girls to see it...they haven't read the books yet. I have read both of his books and enjoyed them tremendously. I much prefer to see the movie first, for I find that once I have read the book/s then I do have preconceived ideas of what a character will be like, or the scenery. Even LOTR lost so much in the movie...no movie maker will ever be able to translate all of the important details and put them into the film.

Personally I think this young writer has improved enormously since his first book. Is there any proof that he was helped in writing these books by his parents?

To continue this thread, I have now actually seen the movie...

And it's very thin. It felt like watching about half of any one of the LOTR movies, if that. There's only a single thread of narrative, which is pretty derivative along the standard "commoner discover's he's a hero, gains a mentor, then finds the quest which he undertakes with friendly dragon" kind of thing. There doesn't seem to be much character development, a chunk of the cast only appear in the last quarter and have no back-story, the military tactics are pants and some of the physics is suspect. On the plus side the acting by the adults is fairly good and the effects are worth every penny. Saphire IS a believable dragon for me.

i saw jonathon ross' actual review of it today. he was relaly harsh! i did love what he said about the kid looking like an adult, because eragon really does! he doesn't look 15 at all

but robert carlye looks REALLY good in the clips. that's one good thing :)

Just come in from watching it; where do you start? For a start, in the film, he actaully says he's seventeen - which effectually stops the "he looks older than I imagined him in the book" idea.
The first half hour was all 20 second clips, strung together to give some back-story - fine for a 3 hour plus film, but not fora ninety minute film.
There was.... but it's not worth it.
Deeply disappointing - too rushed, incoherent at times, plot messed about with, single-strand story...
I didn't expect much - and I wasn't disappointed in my expectations.:(:(
