It won't affect the plot at all, but i've been wondering about this for a while.

If jon is rhaegar's son by Lyana, what's his "real" name?

As i've speculated before (cant remember what thread (it wasn't the main point, just kinda went off course)) Rhaegar (either because he believed/knew the prince would be Aegon reborn, or just because Aegon I was the greatest of his line, and so a fitting namesake for the child) named his first son (and, as far as he knew, TPTWP) Aegon. He also named his first daughter Rhaeynes (sp?), the name of one of Aegon's wives. It's logical to assume that (again, either because he "knew" that TPTWP would have two sister-wives, or out of a sense of symmetry) he would have, expecting a girl-child, decided to name lyana's child visenya. Now, Rhaegar was no longer alive when out popped little Jon, and even if he had been lyana didn't have time to consult with him. So what would she have named this unexpected boy? Bearing in mind his potential link to prophecy etc. Jon just doesn't cut it tbh. Well, Aegon, the name of the great king, is taken, but what about his steed? Balerion, named after a GOD! Now THAT is a name for greatness.

Perhaps.

TBH, I just really like the idea of Jon Snow/Balerion Targaryen, garbed in the black steel and cloth of the night's watch, charging at the head of his men with them all chanting "The Black Dread! The Black Dread! The Black Dread!" :D

Obviously, you are not familiar with Rajon Rando (pronounced Ray John Ran Doe), a junior guard for the University of Kentucky's men's basketball team. I suspect you'll be getting some email from Mamma Rando real soon.

I just did a Google search for Rhaejon... it seems to be a girl's name! I got 25 hits.

And Aejon is the name of a character in Oaken Dawn, a website concerned with creating stories in the Star Wars universe.

AU, you are always so right, I had to try to prove you incorrect on something. ;)

Haha Boaz. Gotta love Google. No, I'm not famililar with the U. of Kentucky's basketball line-up. Nor am I overly familiar with Star Wars (although my little brother forced me to watch the movies several million times). Either way, I don't envy the bearer of such monikers.

On a side note, this discussion has caused me to wonder why Ned chose the name Jon. Obviously, he was naming him after Jon Arryn, his mentor. However, some noble lords might take offense to having a "*******" named after them. Why not name one of his legitimate sons after Jon Arryn? Is it likely that Jon Arryn knew about Jon Snow's real parentage?

Google can give anyone instant intellectual credibility!

Robb got Ned's best friend's name, Bran got Ned's brother's name, and Rickon (I don't recall any other Rickon's, could Rickon be the diminutive of Rickard?) is probably named (imo) for Ned's father. The other two important males in Ned's life were Jon, his foster father, and Ben, his brother.

Why did Ned not name Sansa and Arya after his mother and sister?

Perhaps Lyanna (or Ned on his own) decided to not put a Stark family name on Jon, lest suspiscion come upon him. Perhaps Lyanna did give Jon a birth name that Ned kept secret... I'll bet Varys knows.

If Jon is a ******* Targaryen and not a ******* Stark, could Aemon figure this out? Aemon is blind, but if he could see, would he see a Targaryen? Aemon is a learned man, does TPTWP also have a foretold name and would Aemon know it? Why did Aemon take so quickly to Tyrion? Could he sense Targaryen blood?

Will Jon be Azhor Ahai? Is that his true name?

hi , iv just finnished reading a storm of swords (part 2) and so far no were can i find anything releating to this please tell me this is a joke cos jon is my fav character and its weird to think he isnt ned starks ******* ...:(

donal, this is purely speculation.

There is no undisputable evidence that Jon is not Ned's *******. On the other hand, Ned was quite mum about Jon and this has led to much discussion about who his mother is and if Ned is really his father. There is a lot of discussion on the forums about this and I won't spoil it for you now, but if you wanna read some of these theories, then look through the old threads.

I personally do not think Ned is Jon's father.

Here are links to the threads... read them at your own risk!

Please don't say that. I'd like to know for sure who at least one of his parents was. Otherwise it just wouldn't be fair.

Your telling me. Martin does not really have to tell us anything. I want Jon to know becuase I feel that his not knowing is a type of burden that might drive him to do something to harm himself.

Unless somehow Eddard was to be alive and be able to chat with Jon, now that would be something.

Life is not fair. You may learn that one day to your sorrow, sweetling.

I've always felt that there's something odd about the naming of Ned's children. Just the order in which it was done. He obviously would not have known how many kids he would have, so he would have had to prioritise which of his friends/family he would "honour" in what order. He obviously loved his family, so why not remember the deceased first? And why no Lyana or [whatever his mum's name was]?

And that's it i'm afraid. :D No startling deductions or assumptions. :) It's just always niggled slightly. dunno why. Anyone with any suggestions to make, please do.
