Picked up The Hickory Staff By Robert Scott & Jay Gordon, haven't heard anything about it,but it looked lonely sat in the bargain basket amongs't the biographies and cookery books I had to buy it.

So has anyone read it,is it worth putting high up in my to read pile...or should I just leave it to gather dust ?

Seriuosly Nixie? because this book has only been published in the last couple of months, so if it's in the bargain basket already doesn't sound too encouraging, then again no accounting for taste I suppose. BTW Book 2 of this trilogy Lessek's Key is due Aug 2006.

Here's a blurb summarised in my own words on it. All the reviews I've seen on it genereally rate it reasonably highly, so maybe you could do a review for Chronies? The worrying thing is the publicity seems to hail it as a natural sucessor to Goodkind who I have no time for, so maybe not so great LOL!...:(

Steven Taylor is an assistant bank manager in a small Mid-West town whilst his roommate Mark Jenkins is a history teacher. Steven after looking through old inactive accounts discovers one prospector left a stash of silver in 1870 that now amounts to 6.3 million dollars. There's also a safe deposit box too left by the aforementioned prospector that's never been opened until Steven amazingly finds the key to the box in an old antique store. Armed with this key he discovers a tapestry that transports him and Mark into the land of Rona where they are captured by a group of resistance fighters. Rona has been occupied by an evil tyrant who wants the key to gain access to a latent evil power, the same key our heroes need to get thmesleves back home safely.

Well in fairness I did paraphrase/reword the original Rune but I'm afraid that's pretty much the plot right there...:(

I read this recently, and was quite taken with it. It had a familiar theme - stranger in a fantasy world unaware that he has special powers finds out through the journey about said powers. The characters are engaging, the evil truly menacing, and some romance sprinkled in. My only regret is that it will be yet another trilogy, meaning I'll have forgotten much of the story when the next ones come out. (not really complaining since rereading good books is a pleasure in itself).

I was given this one to review for SFRevu and found it rather, hmm how shall I put it, diplomatically... weak. So weak I could not finish it and chose not to file the review.

Rarely am I unable to finish a book,I can normally find something to keep me interested but this hasn't engaged me at all.I tried but I just couldn't find even a tiny spark of interest.:(
