I, personally, am quite a fan of the alternative history mini-genre. I was dissapointed to see that Harry Turtledove was not included in any of the forums, as he is my favorite author and one of the most acclaimed authors of alternative history. I have always considered this part of Fantasy/Sci-Fi, and would be interested in discussing some of his works. Is there any chance of seeing any alternative history authors featured on this site?

I know how you feel hunny, I was quite dissopointed to see that Maggie Furey and Margret Weiss/ Tracey Hickman (and a host of others) were also not on there.
The problem is there are one hell of alot of immensely talented authors out there, there just isnt enough room for them all!
:(

Raistillian - I've moved your thread to the Books subforum.

We have subforums created for authors who's works create a great deal of discussion in the forum. When an author has sufficient discussions surrounding their works our fearless leader creates a new subforum for them.

Therefore, if someone's work isn't being discussed as much as you like, start some discussing! We're all happy to chime in our thoughts and impressions, matter of fact, some of us just can't help ourselves :p .

I can't say that I've personally read any Harry Turtledove works. What kind of stories does he write and what makes him a favorite of yours?

Aargh! Big purple font blindness! :p
No offence meant kyekutulu, but this font is a bit TOO eye-catching :)

If there are any authors not been discussed so far, start a thread, see what happens :)

Hi Raistillian - I'm another big fan of Turtledove as well, although my favourite book of his is actually "Guns of the South" rather than his Worldwar series :)

I too have read almost all of his writing, and own a large percentage of it- though I admit my favorites of his are "Agent of Byzantium" (alternate history but a collection of short stories really) and the toxic spell dump, which is just fun.

However, if you're into alternate history, are you following the 1632 verse? (www.1632.org) We're having great fun rebuilding the Europe of the thirty year war- and anyone can join in.

Have enjoyed 3 of the World War books so far.Not familiar with any more of his recent work,eg Civil War/Alternate books...still Hardback only and $30/40 to boot where I shop.
Will echo chrispenycate's sentiment on the 1632/3 books.
Another alternative history worth mention might be the Eric Flint/David Drake Belisarius Series.

Cool. My personal favorites were the Darkness series. You can't find any in your counties libraries?

Unpaid Library fine now more than a decade old....:( ...Most Wanted posters,etc...they got me on their Database....:D .

Have to wait for the paperbacks or something under £20.

And,if you can tolerate reading your books in electronic format, the nice people at baen dot com will give you the first two books free. Then, of course, when you're properly hooked, "1634 the Gallileo affair" is only in hard cover, "1634 the bavarian crisis" isn't finished, "1634 the escape from the tower" and "1634- the baltic war" are, to the best of my knowledge not yet started- and with all that Eric's only just found the time to finish "the dance of time", the fifth in the Belisarius series, which means it'll be a year coming out in paperback.
Ruddy pushers

Got the Gallileo Affair and the four Belisarius books, read the available Free intro to the Dance of Time,...:D .

Re-reading In the Heart of Darkness right now.

A year!?..

You got Gallileo in paperback? There is hope for this Christmas visit, then.

And now WHOOPEE!!WHOOPEE!! I got a letter from Eric Flint this morning- it's the contract I have to sign for the article I wrote!

Well. it's a big deal for me.

No it's Hardback,just knocked down to £16 from £24.
Congrats on your article sale.
Oh, hardcover. I'd be lying if I said economic interests had no influence on my buying exclusively paperbacks, but the main reason is that I have a very small flat and to squeeze books into it others will have to go (oh, I do my best to lend out as many as possible. I've succeded in putting the "nights dawn" trilogy and th Kim Stanley Robinson mars trilogy in my brothers place, which gains shelf space)
I read that "out of the darkness" has come out in paperback. but I'll never find it here.
Sorry about shouting at you earlier- it just came in, and you were there, and you'd heard of Eric Flint. Normally I'm more restrained. :)

I think i may have dragged this Harry Turtledove thread a tad off- theme,Chrispenycate.:)
You're right, of course. Perhaps we could try the Videssos cycle- I can do them in my sleep. No, this is for alternate history- which is how we got sidetracked in the first place- and that's the american civil war series, and they're the ones I'm least good at. Got any ideas about giving him back his threas, or should I just eclipse myself (direct translation from the french- english doesn't have an equivalent)?

Harry Harrison's Eden series is another Alternative/Pre-history series worth reading....:D

back away,....back away,..

Jokes aside,it's a good read.

Your right, this disucssion had gone quite off topic from when I started it. If you would like to discuss more of Harry Turtledove's works you should check out my website. It's currently only a temporary setup, as I am working on configuring the forum to my host server, but I would be happy to talk more abou it there. It is currently up as www.ygsvd.com , under the literature section.
