I may live in Yorkshire but I'm a Scot
I'm curious. Do you wait for all the books in a series before reading? Or do you have a number ofseries going at the same time?

At the moment I've got a number of series going...

R Scott Bakker's Prince of Darkness

James Barclay's Ascendants of Estonia

David Eddings The Elder Gods

Kate Elliott's Crown of Stars

Steven Erikson's Fall of the Malazan

Raymond E Fiest's Darkwar Saga

Robin Hobb's Soldier Son

J VJones Sword of Shadows

Greg Keye's Kingdom of Thorn and Bone

George R R Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire

Gary Wassner's Gem Quest

Also started an Elizabeth Haydon series not sure if I'll ever finish it.

And waiting to be started are Paul Kearney's Mark of Ran and Stephen Donaldson's final chronicles of Thomas Covenant,There are others I've started but can't think of at moment.

I'm reading a few at the moment - all of them epic fantasy. I don't wait for them all to be published, especially not if they're a longer series, but a lot of the older series I read all at once, but that's often because they're shorter. I usually need a break between books in a series, with a couple of exceptions. The ongoing series I'm reading at the moment:
1) The Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson
2) The Prince of Nothing by R Scott Bakker (complete, but last book isn't published yet).
3) A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin
4) A Sword of Shadows by J V Jones
5) Kingdom of Thorn and Bone by Greg Keyes

Can anyone wait for a series to finish before starting to read it? I can't even guarantee to read them in order. Some series you don't even know how many volumes are predicted, let alone how many there will finally be.

Yes, I've started reading series where the author has waited a while before finishing - what is it with the "janissaries" series - twelve years? And even one where he had the bad taste to die before finishing. But I can never be certain of finding the books when the final volume is released- and the basic concept of having unread books sitting round unread is an anathema- after all, I might die without reading them.

Yep, quite a few I'm in on:
Steven Erikson's Fall of the Malazan
Robin Hobb's Soldier Son
Greg Keye's Kingdom of Thorn and Bone
Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files
Rachel Caine's The Weather Warden
Dawn Cook's Truth
Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth
Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time

and probably a few I can't remember unless I see something about them somewhere...like I think I may have started the JV Jones series nixie mentioned but I don't know what books are in it so I'm not sure.

Is it Rhapsody? An excellent series, it only gets better.

Sure. I know I do (the only exception being George R.R. Martin's series).

Every since my experience with Robert Jordan, I will not start an ongoing series until said series is finished. I'll see what people have to say after said series is wrapped up and take it from there. Jordan's collapsing mess is a good example of what happens when authors get in over their heads (as well as start believing their own press).

I often wait until I've got the second book of a triology for example and then I may start Book 1 with the knowledge that the final book is due within say 6 months or so.

As I tend to focus more on EPIC fantasy, if its a long series I'll read them as I go, the most notable being GRRM Song Of Ice and Fire, Erikson's Malazan and Kate Elliot's Crown of Stars, although I'm holding off with Jordan until Book 12 arrives.

I've got probably 15 plus EPIC fantasy series on the go at the moment. The good thing about the Masterwork series or other classics is that you can read the books w/o the worry of when the next one is due.

I've only got the two on the boil at the moment, the ever lengthening ASoIaF, and Keye's Kingdom of Thorn and Bone. It doesn't really bother me if a series is does or not before I start reading. If it's new, I won't think, 'Well, I'd best wait for them all to come out,' I'll read it to see if the wait is worth the bother. Lately, it has usually not been....

Hmmm...currently:

A Song of Ice and Fire - GRRM.
Pyat quartet - Michael Moorcock
Kingdom of Thorn and Bone - greg Keyes
Clan Corporate - Charles Stross
Children of Chaos - John C. Wright
Malazan Book of the Fallen - Steven Erikson
Tamir Trilogy - Lynn Fleweling
Soldier Son - Robin Hobb
GemQuest - Gary Wassner
Book of all Hours - Hal Duncan
Discworld - Pratxhett
Ervis Cale - Paul S. Kemp
Common Wealth - Peter F. Hamilton
Roumania - Paul Park
Keys to the Kingdom - Garth Nix
Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant -Stephen Donaldson
Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch
Temeraire - Naomi Novik

Finished Prince of Nothing:) God, I'm sure there is more, just drawing a blank.

I do tend to buy the books in series I am following as they come out. A little frustrating when you're eager for the next instalment, but I dont have the will power not to buy my favourite authors books :D

It's kinda scary to list all the series I am following. I can't hide from my reading addiction when i see it in black and white :D :D

i never thought about it. i know some people who do, but if i see a book and it sounds good, i buy it. then i wait for the rest. its not an intentional thing. i know that, a few books i have brought, that i enjoyed, the next book was never written! which is always a pain. and you run the risk, i guess, of the author dying before they finish!

the only one i am waiting for before reading anymore is jordan, but thats more a, i don't think he will finish and i won't waste any more cash until he has, thing.

As Rune says

Two words: Harry Potter.
Although I don't actually want Rowling to write the final book for about ten years yet. I love the anticipation and speculation of what the next book will be like.

I couldn't begin to list everything I am in the middle of reading, though it does occur to me that I have never yet managed to get hold of all books by Tamora Peirce (I think) and Jack Chalker.

Tamora Peirce wrote a book called Wolf Speaker, concerning Veralidaine and her tutor Nim ...something. I can't remember the title of Chalker's book, but it concerns and alternate world and a sorcerer called Ruddygore who 'rescues' a trucker from our world and sets him on the path to being a mercenarie hero.
Anyone got a clue about the books I'm talking about?

I too buy each new volume as soon as it is on the shelf if possible. We all know how long we sometimes have to wait before the next one, so I move on to another series during the interim. I tend to slow down a little on the last few chapters of the final volume of a great series...I don't want it to end.

I dont slow down on buying the last few volumns. I just leave them in my to read pile longer :D

Well, I might have to do the same...still whichever way one goes about it, it's still a wrench when the last page is turned.

Right now, the only series I'm involved with are Harry Potter and A Song of Ice and Fire......I think.
I'm going to start the last Thomas Covenant series in 2006 and am considering other series by Sean Russell, John Marco, and Steven Erikson.
