The Tournament

Not to long ago I got the d20 RPG book all based on the Game of Thrones. If you haven't seen it yet its a great book . Even if you aren't into RPG's it has a lot of great westros information in it as well as some great GoT artwork, and its all made better by the fact that GRRM was a big part of making and designing the book and system.

In the back of the book it has a bunch of character sheets with stats for a lot of the best people in the series. So since I wanted to get a grasp of the new combat system in the book anyway I descided to hold a great Tournament using the stats in the book . My only rule for being in the tournament was that the character had to be alive at some point in time in the books (so that eliminates people like Rhaegar, Arthur Dayne) .

The Tournament consists of 32 people broken up into 4, 8 man brackets. Currently Im about halfway through the tournament and have 2 people already in the final four.

If anyone is interested I would be glad to post up the tournament competators and results over here. Right now im really just doing it for me and a few other GRRM friends of mine but if there was interest over here I would love to get your comments as well .

Heres the Brackets. The way I did them if just to put all the names into a hat and just draw for the matchups. It did make for a few interesting first round matches (Loras , Renly anyone LOL)

Ok the main interesting thing about the combat in the Got world is the stressing on realism. They consider fighting to be serious business where any wound can kill if not tended to. Also the advantage of armor is pretty big as well. In the system having better armor reduces the damage you sustain from a sword blow. For example If Ser Jorah Mormont is wearing Full Plate armor it gives him an Armor Rating of 8. So any blow that hits him is automatically reduced by 8 because of the difficulty getting through the armor. Shields also add a bonus similar to the Armor Rating.
Valyrian Steel blades also give a great bonus. Because of the quality of the blades they reduce the Armor Rating by 1/2 of what then normally are (so Ser Jorah's would only be 4 if he were fighting Ned Stark with Ice) .

Also on the realism of the fighting they have a Shock Value # for each person . This # represents the ammount of damage a person can take without going into shock. For example a minor hit would not do anything to you but if you got your hand chopped off that is majior damage and you may go into shock (being unable to react). Most of the peoples shock values range from 6-10 . So if Ser Jorah has a Shock value of 7 and the damage that is done to him from a single blow is greater than 7 there is a chance that he will go into shock .

Because of these rules the fights can sometimes go pretty fast . A lot of the time is is who ever connects with that one big blow that wins the fight. It makes for some interesting battles and some upsets for sure .

Ok Ill start of the tournament .
Im going to finish each bracket before moving on to the next bracket . Getting one person from each bracket into a final 4.
The Characters in the tournament are figured as being in their best shape from the series (for example Jamie has 2 hands, Brienne is using Oathkeeper) . I will try to put up one matchs results a day.

So without further adu we open the Tournament with

Ser Jorah Mormont Vs Bronze Yohn Royce.​

The match opens with Jorah Mormont charging quickly over to try and deliver a killing blow right off the bat . But Yohn Royce is to quick for him and sidesteps the charge to deliver a backhand blow to the side of Jorah's helm. They stand toe to toe trading parrys and glancing blows till Bronze Yohn sees an opening . He turns his cut into a quick thrust that penetrates through the eyeslit of Ser Jorahs helm and drops him in a Pool of blood. Ser Jorah stubbornly tries to recover but Yohn Royce kicks him to the ground and delivers the a killing blow underneath his gorget .

Timett VS Ser Garlan Tyrell

Timett opens up the match with a ferocious charge that totally catches Ser Garlan off guard. With all of his strength Timett swings his sword into the unprotected area under Ser Garlan's right sword hand. The blow is so savage it cleaves Ser Garlan nearly in two. Garlan goes down in shock and pain and Timett finishes him off by cutting his throat. Timett wins in impressive fasion not even giving Ser Garlan time to swing a single blow.

Stannis Baratheon VS Aero Hotha
​

The match opens up with Aero Hotha moving forward and keeping Stannis off balance with a thrust of his long PoleAxe. Stannis turns the blow with his shield and charges forward trying to get in range to bring Lightbringer into play. He takes another blow on his shield and brings Lightbringer around to attack but Hotha easily parries the blow with the haft of his Axe. Stannis charges in again and gets by Hotha's defences delivering a slice across his cheek . The cut seems to enrage Aero Hotha and he comes back at Stannis with a vengence. Hotha launches into a whirlwind attack and bashes Stannis's Shield till it falls to shattered pieces off of his arm. Stunned Stannis stumbles back but Hotha comes on forward cutting his leggs out from under him with one sweep of his Axe and then bringing it back around to cut off Stannis's sword arm with his next vicious cut. As Stannis looks on at Lightbringer lying in a pool of blood next to his severed arm Hotha delivers the killing blow to the back of Stannis's Head.

Lord Randyll Tarly VS The Hound Sandor Clegane

The Match opens with Lord Randyll rushing forward swinging Heartsbane in both hands aiming a powerful stroke at The Hounds scared face. Just in the nick of time The Hound brings up his shield deflecting the blow but the fine Valyrian Blade still cleaves off a portion of his Shield. The Hound answers with a trio of powerful strokes. Lord Randyll parries 2 of them and then sidesteps the 3rd while bring up Heartsbane to cut at The Hounds exposed face. Once again The Hound just gets his shield up in time but the blow cleaves the rest of the shield in two. With a howl of fury The Hound charges feining a strike to the head but when Lord Tarly brings his sword up to defend The Hound reverses his cut and brings the blade up hard into Lord Tarly's groin. Dropping Heartsbane to the ground Lord Randyll falls in a heap . The Hound quickly opens his bowels finishing Lord Randyll Tarly for good.

Semi Finals for Bracket 1.


"Bronze" Yohn Royce VS Timett Son of Timett​

The Match opens up again with Timett launching a ferocious charge across the arena he swings a vicious blow as Yohn Royces head attempting to end this fight like he ended his first fight....But...Bronze Yohn almost casually parries the blow, reversing the parry into a savage downward cut that takes Timett's left hand off at the wrist. To his credit Timett doesn't even seem to feel the pain and and hacks down again at Yohn Royces head. Both blows get by Bronze Yohn's parries but his Bronze armor seems to protect him. Royce bulls ahead into Timett knocking him slightly off banance and giving him a deep cut in his abdomon as well . With growing impatience Timette swings out wildly twice and one of his cuts opens up a small gash in the elbow of Bronze Yohn's armor. Yohn Royce comes back with a wicked slash that hits Timett in the upper thigh followed closely by a back slash that opens Timett's throat ear to ear. His mouth filling with blood Timett colapses on his back drownding while Bronze Yohn Royce cleans his blade on Timett's jerkin and puts it back in its sheath.
