Probably the single most ambitious attempt at releasing comic strips ever has to be Fantagraphics awesome Complete Peanuts series, which aspires to collect every Peanuts strip ever from 1950 to the end. These are a dream come true for fans of comics strips and of Peanuts.

I'm pleased to say that I have the first three, and I expect to buy the fourth ASAP. These volumes are beautiful. An essay opens each hardcover, and each page features three strips. A good deal of this stuff has not been seen since it was very first published a half-century ago.

And there are 20 to go after this! They are being released two per year, which means the entire collection will take 12 1/2 years to complete. Wow!

Lots more information on the series here.

Peanuts, aka Charlie Brown, may have gotten a bit lame (and very tame) in its final days, but the early Peanuts strips were really fantastic. I had the pleasure of reading many of the early Peanuts strips when I was a kid thanks to softcover collections owned by my father, and have since read some more in these collections. They are so full of sadness and joy and innocence and playfullness. You can't not like them.

If you get them, look towards Amazon. They run just under $20 each. Well worth the money,
