Just got this for Christmas

After much debate over what I wanted for Christmas, I decided to buy the book. This will be my gift for the "eve" (I pick one each year).

I'll begin to read it tomorrow morning for the holidays (playing with the kids and watching a movie will surely tire me out). I'm sure I'll enjoy. :) You'll hear from me once I'm done.

cornelius - not to discourage you from posting what you've got for Christmas (feel free to do so, but that would more likely fit into the lounge area), but this thread is regarding Prefx's receipt of a novel written by one of our members, in her forum. So, the topic here is The Hidden Stars (which is a good book by the way - we're all anxiously awaiting the next installment) not what you got for Christmas.

An easy enough mistake to make, cornelius.

Let us hope that Prefx doesn't have cause to think he made a mistake in picking his own Christmas present.

I received an early present on Thursday when I had a chance to see the cover sketch for the new book. I tried to upload it for other people to see, but it's the wrong kind of file. Maybe when I have the final artwork I'll find a way to do it.

Are you able to tell us what it looks like/depicts?..

If you'ld prefer to post the pic that's fine, just thought a little teaser might be good...:D

It's one of my various heroes (for those of you who have read THS, I'm referring to Prince Ruan) facing off against a particularly nasty-looking manticore.

The artist is Stephen Youll -- some of you may recognize him as the very talented man who's been doing the American covers for ASoFaI.

Yes I've seen several of Mr Youll's covers over the years for authors including Arthur C. Clark, C.J. Cherryh, Robert Silverberg, Weis and Hickman, Ian McDonald, George R. R. Martin and Robin Hobb. Pretty talented I agree.

Thanks for the update, I look forward to viewing the new cover...:)

As do I.

Just started 'Book 2' today. So far, I'm loving it. :D

At last, I'm done. :D Sorry about the long period of time. The holidays took a lot out of me.

I thoroughly enjoyed this piece, I must say. You've got a beautiful voice that is refreshing after reading books like Eragon and Eldest. There's also some themes in here that are amazing: I love the father/daughter connection, the magic and how it interacts with the world, and definately the perspective of how they rule in the Empire.

My favorite character is Raun. I think he's one of the most developed characters that doesn't have inner thoughts shown. I also agree with how to handle a few situations, but I'll leave the blood out of it. ;)

It's a great job, especially for your first. I'll be buying 2, definately.

Thank you for the kind words, Prefx.

That father/daughter relationship is actually a very important part of the story to me, so it's particularly nice when someone notices and appreciates it. And I continue to feel that I have been under-utilizing Prince Ruan.

(He will get his chance eventually.)
