Mark Anthony - Last Rune series

This is the other series to be discussed during January :D

This is one of the first series I started to read and a real gem.
Not easy to get all the books now for some reason.

It's about a world that is connected to ours, but full of magic and strange ways. Feels very anchient at times too.

Have read the first 2 or 3 of the series a couple of years ago and enjoyed it...thinking of starting again. Barnes and Noble (a major bookstore chain over here in America, not sure if they are international or not) usually has the whole series in stock.

I really enjoyed the series. There were a couple of things that bothered me, but there was much more to like. I'll try to keep this as spoiler free as possible.

The things that didn't bother me (thus, I liked):
1. The society of witches, some good, some bad, some just confused. This is much more realistic than some stories that have all witches as bad or all good.
2. 'Men of the Bull' as a euphamism. I found it worked quite well and was subtle enough to not be in anyone's face.
3. Runes, and therefore words, having power.

Things that bothered me:
1. The 'preacher' not speaking and not being helpful.
2. The story of the female lead's childhood, seemed too much like the 'bad fairy story'. I understand that people can have bad childhoods, but it seemed that everyone in the book had one and they were all worse than the last one.
3. The doomed people of the brothel - it seemed to have no true purpose but to spur someone into action - which can be alright but it just didn't fit for me.

I agree with some of your comments about the strange things in the series that didnt quite fit or wasnt quite explained.

SPOILERS -

Ive read that some readers are bothered about the relationship of Beltan and Travis. It didnt get a little confusing at times when children were conceived through other relationships! But generally their relationship was dealt with quite sensitively :D

Ole Skeeter's vote went to... (modest drumroll) Horns Can Be Fun.

Monster Girls, Inanimate Objects, Fake Sounds got shortlisted. And Fudge? could have made it to the short list, had it been a beef jerky instead :)
