i think some people were disappointed, at least until it got going. its hard to start something new by a new author, cos you always have the linger idea of what the earlier stuff was like to compre it to

I read it, the writing is good the story is a bit boringbut I do believe this series willl improve with age. I was not dissappointed but it was not one of Robin Hobb's best.

I agree with Rahl on this one, since this is the set-up book for a new series Hobb had to give us a lot of information which sometimes limits the amount of actual 'action' going on in the story. This may be boring to some but I found it interesting enough to not slow my reading down (for really boring books, I can only read a few minutes at a time but for good ones, I can sit for hours...). I would also agree that it isn't her best, but it is shaping up to be a good story.

I'm with Dwndrgn...slower paced with less action than the others,but still interesting enough to keep you reading.I never found it boring and think she's just laying the foundations for a brilliant series.

id loan it first tho. library? cos i brought mine and i wish i hadn't.i can't be bothered with it and i am stuck with it now (i wont' resell cos well i might read it one day in the far future, and so on) but definely loan it first, just in case!

Unless your a crazed hobb fan with money, cos in that case i say buy buy buy!

If you really hate it, and i cant see how you really could *shrug*, somewhere like beakys or other second hand book stores would take it of you. So no real great loss.
The most satisfying feeling is owning your own complete set of something. lol.

As its been said, first book in a new set so lots of ground work needed to be done by the author. More action will always take place once the reader knows where they are. It took me about 4 pages before I was into it enough not to notice I was reading, thats not to shabby. This author is my favourite so I eagerly await the next installment. If you loved her other works it shouldn't be a problem. I believe there was another thread in this section covering opinions on this new series if you want more info.

Have read with interest your comments on the Fool! He was my favourite too alongside the much underrated Burrich and I did like Chade too!

You're right about the complete set satisfaction - I do intend to buy SC now though, just a matter of when!

Absolutely adored her other trilogies, they kept me up late at night and my son, at one point, thought mummy automatically came with a book because of the Farseer, Liveship & Tawny books!!!

I got it for Christmas, and I liked it. Lord knows it was better than most of the crap that's showing up on the shelves these days. My main issue was that the main character didn't grow on me much. I liked him, but I didn't love him, as I did Fitz. I suppose he was a bit too stiff and somewhat close-minded, and I couldn't relate to him well. However, I think the next book(s) will show some major character development. I'll gladly read on.

I think that was done on purpose so that over time Nevare will grow into a character that the audience either loves or hates with a passion. In order to achieve this I think it has to happen very slowly, just my oppinion.

I agree completely. The character of Nevarre could easily go either way in the readers appreciation, and I think Hobb has done this on purpose. I think that Nevarre isn't all that sure if he likes himself either.

You have to look at the society he was raised in. Everyone in it is stiff. That's my problem with the book. Didn't like the culture. I know it will get better, but in the meantime, the culture irritates me.
