Just generally browsing the site and can find nothing about JV Jones except a couple of recommendations - why?

I thought her Book of Words trilogy was great.

Anyone read The Sword of Shadows lot?

Come on, this is a british site, we need to be 'biggin' our authors up too!

xx

I've found the Sword of Shadows series very good, but she's seemed to have disappeared in writing. A Sword from Red Ice doesn't even look like it's on the horizon, and I'm quickly giving up hope. Her website hasn't been updated for a long time, and A Fortress of Grey Ice was published in early 2002 - nearly 4 years ago, and it doesn't seem like anything's happened since.
The other reason I'd suggest is that she isn't quite at the same level as Martin, Erikson and Bakker and doesn't provoke such controversy.

What's more scandalous is that we don't have threads on Mervyn Peake or M John Harrison - two of the greatest British fantasists ever. That said, the Mieville subforums doesn't seem to be doing too badly.

Thanks for getting back to me - appreciate the input.

Think I'll give Sword of Shadows a go - thanks for the heads up on Red Ice though.

Will keep your recommendations in mind, am in the process of purchasing Looking for Jake seeing as it's so highly rated on more than a few sites, figured it must be good.

SWORD FROM RED ICE RELEASE DATE

Well firstly about JV Jones her current Sword Of Shadows series is one of my favourite fantasy EPIC reads. It's quite dark in places but I really liked it and like most am patiently waiting for Sword From Red Ice to be published. The publication date for this book has been put back several tmies as I reported on these forums a little while back. Basically the delays were in part alledgedly due to legal issues but now Jones is still to complete writing the book. Orbit doesn't have a fixed date yet for publication and below is a comment from one of the Orbit hierachy prior to Christmas:

I'm afraid there's absolutely no news on the release date of the book. I realise that this is frustrating for long-time readers of the series (myself included). However, we're still waiting for it to be finished. When authors create worlds as complex as those of J.V. Jones (or George R.R. Martin, to give another recent example), it can take time to write. Please rest assured that any information saying that the book has been published or is about to be published is inaccurate. Once there is some definitive information, it'll be blazoned over the Orbit website.

Another email reply from Orbit following an inquiry appears to confrim the same thing:

Thank you for your email. Unfortunately, there has been a data error with a number of titles that have been moved in our schedule, but the information has somehow not been fed to the bibliographic data agencies (these are the bodies that feed information to the Orbit website and Amazon.co.uk as well as many other websites). A SWORD FROM RED ICE is one of these titles. It is not due for publication this month, in fact we do not have a date at all as yet. We are still waiting for the author to finish writing A SWORD FROM RED ICE, and won't be setting a publication date until we have the manuscript. Keep an eye on the Orbit website for news as we have it.

OTHER BOOK BY JV

As far as other books go I didn't find the Book Of Words trilogy that good but found both her writing and general stroytelling ability had improved with her standaolne book The Barbed Coil I quite enjoyed it and felt it was a definite improvement from here first series. The current series I had to wonder if it was the same writer doing the work the writing was that much better than its predecessors!!

As far as other threads on JV go I generally tend to perform a search first to check out what's already here before posting but I'm assuming you already did that. I'm pretty sure I've either created or contributed to threads on JV so I'm obviously a fan of hers as is a number of members.

I've recently purchased Looking For Jake and as I'm only now plowing through it it's very good indeed which is no suprise from a master writer in Mieville. If you like the style of these stories you'll probably enjoy his classic New Crobuzon series which is wonderful in the extreme, a fine example of New Weird fiction.

All the best and hope you continue to unearth some reading gems as you traverse you way through the byways of the Chronicles Network...:D

BTW if you want to read some excellent fantasy I can recommend to you the MasterWorks series featuring many excellent examples of this Genre in days gone by.

AW shucks..... ;) :D

Glad to be of help and please let us know how you go with reading your latest books.....:)

Sadly I haven't yet had a chance even to obtain Looking for Jake yet - the only Mieville I have is the Tain - this is the problem with the internet - loads of recommendations, and not nearly enough time to read them all.

Yes but you have read his New Crobuzon series I'm sure but maybe not King Rat huh?...

Also excuse me for asking but can you not get a copy of Looking for Jake from your local bookshop or do you mean more the point is that you just don't have enough time to read all these books....

Simply time - I've seen a few copies of Looking for Jake in my local bookshop, as well as King Rat, but there are so many other authors I've discovered in the past year - I can always turn back to Mieville when I run out of amazing fantasy to read.

The Barbed Coil is a very poor book Adasunshine. Unless of course you are looking for a definitively duller Narnia hack, or perhaps a retarded Thomas Covenant. The prose is great but the story is a dull affair.

The Book of Words is quite limited but is a nice little read and has a few dark moments (brazen paedophilia) to suggest that Jones is capable of better things.

The Sword of Shadow series was excellent but I have give up on waiting for her to complete it. I guess the issue is really the fact that she released the title of the book and suggested that the book was near completion. Otherwise I would have waited far more patiently.

It is a real, she really could have been one of the greats.

Well perhaps you're right there the story wasn't that great but like you say her prose improves from the Words trilogy which I think had the better amd more interesting story of those two but the poorer writing. Needless to say as most members here seem to be in agreement Sword Of Shadows is easily her best work and of a high standard. It's a shame she's taking so long to get the third book completed and published because she'll loose fans like you due to the constant dealys and she's certainly one of the better writers now in the Genre...

Her website looks quite good - http://jvj.com/

Ive only read one of her books - Cavern of Black Ice, it didnt move fast enough for me. But Im difficult to please :D

Strange, I don't remember A Cavern of Black Ice being particularly slow moving. If anything, it was A Fortress of Grey Ice that had a slightly slow pace, but nothing compared to the worst offenders. True, it wasn't as fast paced as some of the very accessible (and IMO, worst) novels of the genre, but it was hardly slower than most first novels in a decent epic series - Martin's A Game of Thrones is similarly paced, as is R Scott Bakker's the Darkness that Comes Before, and they're actually slightly slower paced.

Yep. Just looked at her (J.V. Jones) website. The book is with the publishers for editing and proofing. She said something about rewriting. Hopefully it will be out by the end of this year or the beginning of next.:D

That's my hope, by the way.
