For those of you who have been somewhat tempted to read my epic but have been put off by the price of the trade paperback (I seldom buy them myself, so I can sympathize), the much more affordable mass-market edition of The Hidden Stars will be coming out in a couple of months. I didn't want to jinx it by mentioning it too early, but since they're listing it among upcoming books in the EOS online newsletter this month, I guess it's safe.

However, to celebrate this momentous occasion, as soon as I have copies, there will be another contest so that I can give out a few of them as prizes. Of course they will be signed, and there may be other little extras as well.

As before, the contest will NOT be limited to residents of North America.

Far be it from me to discourage people from buying or ordering the book in the meantime, but if money is an issue and you're feeling lucky ...

Dagnabit! I already bought it just before Christmas from Amazon.
So, I've missed the chance of a signed copy. :(

I'm not going to be putting any limitations on who can participate. Anyone who already owns a copy and wants to try and win one of the signed copies is welcome to do so.

On the other hand, if there were enough interest, I could probably be convinced to run a second contest for people who already own the book, with signed bookplates and/or maps as the prizes.

What kind of competition? I'm hoping it's limbo!

Seriously, though, I will keep a keen eye peeled for it on these here southern shores.

Oh no, it will probably just be some little thing that is fiendishly difficult and physically grueling. Possibly involving boiling oil and cayenne pepper.

Boiling oil and cayenne pepper. Hmmm. It's an Iron Chef-style cooking showdown, then? I'm a dead set cert, in that case.

Like the new avatar too, Kelp, though I had to look twice to check it was you...

Trust the gentleman to take notice of a pretty face! (Unfortunately not an actual portrait.)

I was getting tired of looking at the ship and the dragon, and figured other people probably were, too. And while actually in the market for something with a spooky old lady, I stumbled on this one and found it impossible to resist.

So everyone who says your new avatar is pretty gets a chance to win the prize? ;)

Well yes ... along with everyone else.

But since it's not my actual face (or art) it doesn't really help anyone's chances.

On the other hand, compliments on the beauty of my children might well be effective, if I'd ever posted any of their pictures.

Amazon and B & N both say that the mass market Hidden Stars will be available on February 28, so that will be the day I start the contest -- even though Brian has already seriously upstaged me with his book give-away competition.

To make sure that people in any given time-zone aren't at a disadvantage, the contest will run for 48 hours, then I'll draw three names from among those who have PM'd me the correct answer to an as-yet-to-be-determined question. I think that's the fairest way to handle it, and since I've announced the time-frame in advance no one should be at a disadvantage that way either. Additionally, of course, the anticipation has a chance to build to a fever pitch! (You are all of you anticipating, aren't you?)

For those of you who already own unsigned copies of the book, there will be a second contest running simultaneously (my generosity on this occasion apparently knows no bounds -- or perhaps I'm just being over-optimistic about the level of interest), for specially designed and personalized signed bookplates.

Well I will watch this thread then because I would really like to read the Hidden Stars from all I have read about it this sounds like a story I would like. Also you have been very helpful with answers to lots of my questions and for that I have to thank you.

Rahl

PS: The only signed book I own is an author named J. Michael Yates. The book he signed for me is not fantasy its called Line Screw and it is about his job as a prison guard, a fascinating read and definetly a job I would never take. Although this book reads like a story it is a fair chunk of Mr. Yates life history dramatized a bit.

Well, Kelpie...I won't be entering the contest. Not good at them. However, I will definitely be down at my local bookstore agitating for my copy of the book on the 28th. I figure that's better than just ordering on-line. Anybody can do that. Going down to the bookstore, on the other hand, takes effort.

Well, not that much effort. It's only about two miles down the street from me. But they don't need to know that.;)
