When will the Dance begin?

I have been searching through various posts here and other boards around the net and I can't find anything saying when A Dance With Dragons will be released. Does anyone know? Will it take as long as the Feast did?

All I can tell you is that tere is nothing on Martin's site yet giving a preliminary date. Of course Feast was originally to be released Summer/Fall of 2004, so a date right now would probably be off anyway.

There are rumors of it being released sometime this year.

That and this is from the note at the end of Feast:

"Tyrion, Jon, Dany, Stannis and Melisandre, Davos Seaworth, and all the rest of the characters you love or love to hate will be along next year (I devoutly hope) in a Dance of Dragons, which will focus...."

So it may or may not be released in 2006, though hopefully it is.

I seem to remember reading something from Martin saying that once the book is completely finished it takes at least 6 months to print, bind and ship. So if he is absolutely finished with aDwD right now it would not be out until July.

In the update (May 29th 2005) he says "As for me, I am getting back to work. There's good news on that front too -- A DANCE WITH DRAGONS is half-done!!! " That said, he probably isn't finished.

I know I am being pessimistic, but sometimes seeing the glass as half full means you save something to drink for later!

I read somewhere on a site just the other day that it's not actually expected until early 2007.

Also, to back this up Amazon are expecting it February 2007 so it's a bit of a wait but I don't mind so much as it gives me more time to read through the first 4 again.

I tend to be optimistic (and perhaps gullible) and agree with Tyranus on this. When I saw that GRRM had written of a hopeful (probable?) release in 2006, given the length of time and amount of vocal dissatisfaction from ASOIAF's fans, I thought that he must be releasing it this year. He can't back it up to Christmas 2007 or later after (nearly) promising 2006.

Then again, this is why I'm more like Sansa than any other character in ASOIAF. I'm trusting, non-duplicitous (not saying GRRM is), and I have this romanitcized picture of the world. It's a good thing I've never met a real Littlefinger... but I did meet Cersei, much to my delight and dismay.

I think Martin's written >1/2 of A Dance with Dragons, and as he's got this one plotted out properly it shouldn't take nearly as long. I doubt it'll be released in 2006, but I expect an early-mid 2007 release. A Dance with Dragons is essentially the second half of A Feast for Crows - remember that most of this was in the AFFC manuscript, but he was forced to split it because of the publishers.

He may have said 2006 for the release of A Dance with Dragons, but so far Martin hasn't written nearly that quickly - there were two year gaps between A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings, and between aCoK and aSoS.

But then again I don't think he was half done with ASoS when ACoK was published. I think a late 06 release is quite possible, especially since he has already been working for six months (?) on Dance. A year seems a good time frame for him to finish, based on the two year span you commented on. So lets say he finishes by June, I'd say we could hope for a Winter '06 release.

And if you made sense out of that...congrats.

I'm keeping everything crossed that you are right. Really need to read that next book. Wish he could write faster.

I doubt he'll be done as early as June, and the delay between finishing a book and it being published is usually pretty long (for the Bonehunters by Steven Erikson it's approaching a year). I'm not getting my hopes up for A Dance with Dragons coming out this year - it'd be great if it does, but I don't want to be disappointed.

Maybe if he was threatened with the possibility of having to take the Black and become one of the Nightwatch?

Yikes that was bad ... :D

Seriously though the man needs to write faster!

At his signing he said it would be released in late 2006 or early 2007.

Bear in mind that the gap between completion and release is pretty much entirely up to the publisher. If a late 06 (ie in time for Christmas) date is not possible... the publishers are very unlikely to go for a January or even February release IMO.

That said, something to remember is that not only is half (approximately) of ADWD written: it's also been edited. Should speed the process along.

We may know more after Vericon this weekend. I know some folks that are meeting George there. I'll make sure they ask. ;)
