I loved this book! I've read it twice so far, once in hardcover from the library (I seldom buy hardcovers) and again when I bought it in paperback. I've read *Glass Dragons* and I'm waiting for that ppb.
The first McMullen book I read was *Miocene Arrow*, which was so original and so enthralling that I immediately got the rest of the series and wolfed it down. It is post-apocalyptic SF, with a completely different reason for the end of civilisation.
*Voyage of the Shadowmoon* is fantasy with some SF elements. McMullen writes a 'big picture' book and shifts between different characters in different situations very deftly. His characterization is varied, and his plots have interesting new combinations. This is not epic fantasy -- there is no great ancient evil. Just the machinations of rulers and other selfish or deluded people. There is some humour, but not too much. (Who knew belly dancing could save the world?) There is some romance, but just enough to round out his characters. Small warning: McMullen never sticks with 'happy every after'. Friends and lovers get together in one volume and fall out by the next, which is the way real life often works ...
