Here's a few remaining active links I've used as research. Lost the URLs to a couple so I'll either track them down, or else look for similar information elsewhere:

Variations on Space Opera - good info on this specific subgenre of SF.

MILITARY LINKS:

There's a general tendency for space vessels to be based upon both naval and airforce designations and terms, according to the size of the vessels used (usually naval for larger vessels, with airforce terminology used for smaller fighter-sized craft). If that's the way you're going, here's some good links:

General Military nav site - USAF, USN, Marine Corp and US Army

Good list of links and details for naval vessels/units

Large naval resource site

Here's two nice ones:

STELLAR DENSITY

Nothing more than a simple table listing basic stellar values -but very useful for structuring galactic habituation.

This table was copied from another website - but blowed if I remember which one and where.

US and British military ranks compared

Doesn't sound like much - excepting that this is a *comprehensive* listing of commissioned and non-commissioned ranks in all of the US and British armed forces - side by side on a chart for easy reference to equivalent rankings. It's an invaluable base for structuring your own ranking systems - whether by direct imitation, or simply as a guide. A darn fine resource for any SF writer.

This info was originally posted as a page at www.warships1.com - but they've since removed it.

Of course, don;t forget the hubble site - though you could always go here for the hubble gallery itself.

There's always the NASA website as well, though if you're looking for something in particular, you could always try looking in the NASA sitemap. If it's just the pictures you want, then here's the multimedia gallery where you can find the archives of photo, video, and audio, available online. If you're simply after the great planetary photos, this is the place to look out for.

Have fun. ;)
