Most gorgeous bookcovers

Re: Most gorgous bookcovers

I own hundreds of books and I can't think of one bookcover I've ever noticed. I'm always too eager to get inside.

Re: Most gorgous bookcovers

Well, for the most part the covers are flavor to the inside of the books..mmm

Re: Most gorgous bookcovers

One recent accquisition of mine was a library classic collection of 26 short stories by HG Wells, it has a beautfiul cover reminsicent of those 1950s SF movie posters.

Re: Most gorgous bookcovers

I don't pay a lot of attention to book covers, and I normally find that the UK covers are better than the US covers. There are a few exceptions,Kelpie's [Madeline Howard] cover for her next book is a work off art, but I never judge a book by its cover.

Re: Most gorgous bookcovers

I always notice the covers, especially if they're by a good artist such as Michael Whelan. My favorite cover is Joan Vinge's Winter Queen. It is quite breathtaking. In fact, I purchased a print from MW's gallery of the Winter Queen and the Summer Queen.

Re: Most gorgous bookcovers

I probably haven't paid any attention to any book covers for close to 20 years. I do remember noticing the covers for the Edgar Rice Burroughs "Mars" series because most of them in the editions I bought were drawn by Frank Franzetta and were very striking. I'm considerably older now and much more jaded when it comes to that type of dramatic cover.

Re: Most gorgous bookcovers

I always like to look at the covers :>

Ive always loved all of Howe's illustrations for Hobb.
I love the fact the Wurts uses her own art.
Steph Swainston's covers are brilliant. (In fact it was the covers that got my attention in the bookstore :>) Not too long ago I bought 'No present like time' - I don't know if anyone else has this cover but it was the version that was solid white with the blue writing and sword on the cover : very simple but there was something just so classy about it.

Re: Most gorgous bookcovers

Mark's cover art for Imperial Assassin is stunning.

And I still like (old argument, different thread) the Jody Lee covers on the US editions of Kate Elliott's books.

Some of the Kinuko Craft covers for the ACE editions of Patricia McKillip's books are amazing, so full of intricate (and significant) detail -- its almost like deciphering a code. The Tower at Stony Wood is my favorite; the more you look at it the more connections to the story you find, yet the picture is also perfectly beautiful in its right.

Re: Most gorgous bookcovers

I like the more minimalist covers, like Steph Swainston's "The Year of our War", and also the original Canadian cover of R Scott Bakker's "Darkness that Comes Before"...

Re: Most gorgous bookcovers

I like the Terry Pratchett covers... not the new, black ones, the old, scary ones that put everyone off reading the books...

Re: Most gorgous bookcovers

Im no art expert but I like Bruce Penningtons covers. Not any one in particular just his style. I also used to like the covers on Michael Moorcocks books from the sixties.

Re: Most gorgous bookcovers

I really like the covers for thr Japanese edition of A Game of Thrones (GRRM). I also think that consistently John C. Wright's books have some beautiful cover work. Gary (Wassner) also has some pretty alluring covers, I also like the new treatement on Bakker's Prince of Nothing sequence.

I also think that John Picacio did a tremendous job with Jeffey Ford's Empire of Ice Cream. I also really dig Edward Miller's work on China Mieville's books .

Re: Most gorgous bookcovers

All the China Mieville covers are brilliant, and I like most of the fantasy masterworks covers.
Of course, Erikson's Deadhouse Gates has a brilliant cover.
Charles de Lint's the Onion Girl has a decent cover as well.

Re: Most gorgous bookcovers

Anything by Michael Whelan in the past 15 years. His "Black Sun Rising" cover and the successive two covers in the series were masterworks.

Go to michaelwhelan.com to check them out.

I said it was the Winter Queen cover that I liked, but it was the Summer Queen instead. It's been a long time since I read it. MW also did the covers for the first 2 Robin Hobb Assassin books. That's what attracted me to them in the first place. He also did the first covers for C. J. Cherryh's Foreigner books and Melanie Rawn's Dragon and Exiles books.

I really like the covers of the Empire trilogy by Feist. I'm so gla dI bought the edition I did. There's Daughter, Servant and Mistress. Whenever I'm reading it, I usually find myself looking at the cover for a while. I love the colours and the atmosphere the picture exudes.

I also particularly like this Magician cover, but I haven't seen it in shops anywhere.

Yeah, Edward Miller has some very good stuff. He also did the covers for a number of the Erikson novellas. All very full of depth and feeling:)

The only cover i can think of is for a book thats not even published yet!! hehe, greg keyes the blood knight looks absolutly stunning!

Its very CGI, but I like it a lot :)

With nonfantasy though, i can think of loads, but then i do partly choose non fantasy books because of the cover...very silly because sometimes the books aren't any good hehe

Wow, that is excellent. If I saw that cover in a bookshop, I would definitely stop and take a closer look.
