Fantasy Recommendations for the Unenlightened 2

I did enjoy Lyoness Kamagate, though normally I prefer a more modern fantasy. It did keep me entertained, found Poul Anderson in the same vein but of the two Ii much prefer Jack Vance as you get more involved into the story

He did write other rated fantasy in Dying Earth stories of him if you want to read more of him. Vance that is.

Modern fantasy ? Lyonesse are from late 80s to 90.

He is one of the best writers i read, his prose style, writing ability, world building is legendary.

I didn't mean Lyonesse was modern just that my tastes normally run to more modern stuff :)

Gone back to reading Fritz Leiber's Lankhmar atm, this site encouraged me to buy some classics ages ago so working through them as you can tell with Vance, Anderson and Leiber :D

And after you've finished with those 3 giants you may wish to check out Hope Mirlees classic Lud In The Mist, Eddidson's Worm Oburous albeit with its use of archaic language not to everyone's tastes and for some comic relief the Compleat Enchanter by De Camp and Pratt.

Plenty more to come after that of course.....:)

Noooo no more lol

got a huge pile to get through as it is and been sidetracked by Lovecraft

Fair enough. Lovrecrat eh? Another master. If you like Lovecraft be sure to check out Thomas Ligotti. He's still alive so that makes him more modern.....;)

Interested to know what are some of the books/authors in your reading pile?

well you asked lol

Neconomicon
The God Delusion
Books of Blood - Barker
the Darkness that comes before - Bakker
Deadhouse gates - Erikson
White Crow - Mary Gentle
finishing Last Dragon - JM McDermott
Blood Meridian - Cormac McCarthy

They are the ones I could find lol, packing them all up to decorate spare room atm

Cool.

Those items by Erikson (the greatest EPIC fantasy series I've ever read), Bakker, McCarthy, Gentle and Barker are all excellent. Necromonicon (sp?) and God Delusion are of interest too but I've not read McDermott. Any good?

well ole JD raved about McDermott and Last Dragon so much I went out and bought it - read about a half of it and it was interesting but that was ages ago and got distracted, can still remember where I am up to though so will finish shortly - looking forward to this unforgettable ending i think I heard about :D

and yeah I meant Necromonicon

JD raving about a contemporary Fantasy novel you say?...well there's a turn up.....

Actually did you mean JD Worthington or another poster?

I presume you realise The Necromonicon doesn't really exist?...one of Lovecraft's great "inventions" from which a myriad of spin-offs has arisen.

nope the one and only JD Worthington and I think it was him lol

I hope so anyway lol.. has been awhile since my last regular foray into the chrons.. me bad lol

I'm almost certain.. any way what I read so far was interesting

Yes either way, as you are enjoying the book that's the main thing.

Have to sign off.

Thanks for the chat....:)

Neconomicon

I'm curious as to which Necronomicon this is -- there have been quite a few by now (most of them pure dreck, a couple of mild interest, and one which is actually rather good... in part....)

The God Delusion

Good book; and a very interesting man....

Books of Blood - Barker

I can't help asking... is this the original three-volume set, the entire six-volume set, or the American edition....?

As for The Last Dragon... No, I don't think it would have been me, as I've not read that one.... Speaking of which:

Pffft.:p

Sez you.

Heretic.

;)

I myself have seen the book Necromonicon. Reminded me of you Gollum, because I know how much you enjoy Lovecraft!

From what I could make out it is made up of many of his greatest works. The book cover itself looks fantastic, a lovely dark blue and would look good in your bookcase :)

Well as Rosemary points out the book really does exist!

The book Rosemary is referring to is the same one I have seen on the shelves.

I'm a believer!...... :D

Once I get Mr Worthington reading Erikson, there won't be any further need for pffts....;)

Am curious...I have the six volume set put out as 2 omnibus edns by Time Warner. You're going to tell me there's issue with these right?....GRRRR

Sorry JD I was sure it was you - someone was def bigging Last Dragon up in here awhile back.. theold memory isn't what it was

Books of Blood 1-3 is what I have and it is the Commemorative Edition of Necronomicon printed in 2008 with an afterword by Stephen Jones and illustrations by Les Edwards. Almost 900 pages of Lovecraft's best work :)

Believe me, I'm more than familiar with the feeling....

If you can find them, you might try the other three Books of Blood. All six are uneven, but there are also very good stories throughout.

And I thought that was probably the Necronomicon you meant. Not the best edition textually (as has been discussed elsewhere), but not at all a bad introduction to the man's work....
