Fantasy Recommendations for the Unenlightened 2

Within the last year I finished AGOT, Mistborn by Sanderson, all of Joe Abercrombie's, Rothfuss (name of the wind series), Lies of Lock Lamura,.

I liked the ill-humored and sarcastic books of the last three authors the most. Any recommendations what I could pick up next? Thanks in advance (no scifi classics please, I have read them all. I returned to scifi recently and read most classics in my youth).

Fade to Black - Francis Knight

Literally the only books I ever read (besides the obvious books that are forced down our throats in school) are the first 6 Harry Potter books (currently re-reading because it's been years), the first two Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books (stopped on the third, plan on starting series again after Harry Potter), a few Star Wars books and some manga/comics if you want to count those.

I realize this thread is filled with recommendations that might help me out if I knew exactly what I was looking for... but I honestly don't. Only thing I can say is that I want something to read after both HP and H2G2, but nothing too complicated at the moment. What are some good introductory level novels to either science fiction or fantasy?

I'm not sure about Hitchhikers Guide, as I've never read it... But things that (As a HUGE Potter fan) I have enjoyed are Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials, The Hunger Games are good (though, I'm not sure if that's fantasy?) I quite liked Trudi Canavan's Black Magician Triology. Patrick RothFuss' Kingkiller books are amazing...

Hope this has helped! :)

Thanks you very much for the response (I was thinking I wouldn't get one, but I was proved wrong).

The Hunger Games sounds pretty interesting, as does everything else you recommended! I think I'll start with The Hunger Games, probably check out the film first.

I'll tell you my thoughts once I check them out. Do you have a Goodreads account?

Looking for a recommendation. I've been really into high fantasy series with strong female main character(s). Things like Anne Bishop's Black Jewels series and much more recently Marie Brennan's Doppelganger duo. I don't care for urban fantasy that much but I'll take a stab for the right book.

Any/all recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Cecilia Dart-Thornton's The Ill-Made Mute (first in the Bitterbynde trilogy) might fit the bill. Beautifully written too.

I enjoyed Dart-Thornton's Bitterbynde trilogy. I still think it's the best thing she has written to date.

If you like Steam Punk I highly recommend Stephen Hunt: "The Court Of The Air", "The Kingdom Beyond The Waves", "The Rise Of The Iron Moon", "Secrets Of The Fire Sea", "Jack Cloudie", "From The Deep Of The Dark".
Have read the first four and they are all excellent.

And if you like some Victorian London steampunk in your coffee, I'd recommend Mark Hodder's books > The Strange Affair of Spring-Heeled Jack, The Curious Case of the Clockwork Man, and Expeditions to the Mountain of the Moon.

Conan by Robert E. Howard has been mentioned a couple of times, but things are different these days.

Hey guys, any recommendations for fantasy books that are (at least partly) set in (magic) universities (akin to The Name of the Wind)? Preferably not YA. Thanks!

One could consider most of Lackey's Valdemar series as taking place in such a setting. However, these days I would consider them young adult fiction (having accumulated many a year myself) and, alas, quite repetetive.

Selected books from Terry Pratchet's Discworld series are set in the Unseen University, which is developed in detail.

To Say Nothing of the Dog, and Doomsday Book Connie Willis. Science Fiction, strictly speaking, but still: the history department has a time machine.

The Goblin Reservation Clifford Simak. Again, strictly speaking SF, but the Earth has transformed into a University. There are goblins, fairies, ghosts, a dragon etc. The main character is a professor in the University.

Wizard of Earthsea Ursula le Guin

Black Gods Kiss by C.L Moore. She's en exceelent writer as is here heroine Jirel of Joiry :)

Can people recommend to me more Urban Fantasy or contemporary Fantasy, something like Night Watch,Storm Front etc

Things that are more supernatural with wizards, vamps, werewolves, witches in our world than the usual medevil setting fantasy.

Whats this Norton guy with Witch World for example

P.S cant use question mark in brother laptop...

I love all the series by C.T. Adams & Cathy Clamp, also their Siren series under the name Cat Adams. Also the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning as well as her Highlander series. All focus on supernatural and/or magic in modern times or w/modern time people.

I love Anne Bishop's series. You should also check out Melanie Rawn (Dragon Prince & Dragon Star series), Jacqueline Carey (Kushiel & Kushiel's Legacy series), Elizabeth Haydon (Symphony of Ages Series) & especially Michelle Sagara (The Cast Novels) a.k.a. Michelle West (SunSword & House War series), she writes under both names. All have strong female leads/characters.

So, I am looking for novels, short stories, whatever that combines magic and technology. Some sort of a mashup of a sci-fi genre and fantasy genre, if you know what I mean. Halp?

I would recommend Tad Williams's Otherland series. I thought it combined tech w/fantasy quite well.
