I read it in high school and I rather like ir. But frankly my sympathy was with Trojan people ( not the ruling class of the city ) rather then the Greeks. The character that I came to despise the most was Achilles, especially after what he did to Hector and dishonored him by dragging his body in front of the people of Troy , Hector told Achilles if he defeated and slew a slew him , he would honor him, Achilles made no such return promise, he dishonored Hector , dragged his body around the city. Hector was really was noble, brave and a better man by far then the despicable Achilles. Yes he returned ruined body to his father and did feel bad for the father, but simply put, this doesn't redeem him . As for Helen ? I found her to to be vapid and empty headed, I just can't see why she would merit 100 ship let alone a a row boat, she wasn't worth it. I found Paris to be an irresponsible idiot for putting his people in jeopardy and causing their destruction because he had to have her. He really should have thought this one through.
No less a creep was King Agamemnon, The man sacrificed his own daughter to gain the gods favor.
