Curious - are there any particularly well-anticipated books for 2004? Any major releases we should all be aware of? Any favourite authors who are about to add another major constribution to their world building?

If so, make a note here, and I'll chase up more information - I'm simply curious as to wghether there are any particularly eagerly awaited book releases for 2004.

I haven't heard of any so far that are specifically set to be released in '04. Of course I'm sure there will be. The ones I'm waiting for are the sequel to Fool's Gold by Robin Hobb and the next in the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. Sometime I believe the next in the Wheel of Time series by Jordan will be coming out but as I said there have been no specific dates set that I know of.

Any and all news welcome!

The only thing that's got me really excited is a rumor that I don't even know to be true, although I've seen mention of it in a couple of places. I've heard that the first volume of a third Thomas Covenant trilogy, by Stephen R. Donaldson, is slated to come out either late in 2004 or early in 2005. That should be interesting.

Now I'm really confused! Without giving too much away for anybody that hasn't read these books - I don't see how another trilogy could possibly be in the pipeline.

Now I've really got to re-read that series!!

Other news (in case you care): The next in the Golden Fool trilogy by Robin Hobb is scheduled for release in Feb. 04.

There is no schedule yet for the next in the Wheel of Time. It seems that the publisher is concentrating on re-releasing the first nine in other ways (some for teens and splitting up some of the larger volumes) and I'm sure the author is concentrating on getting the words down (he uses so many!).

The latest in the Outlander series (not including the side-book 'Lord John and The Private Matter which is a stand alone mystery using one of the characters of the series and has already been released) should be released *sometime* in 04. Not even tentative dates have been mentioned that I could find.

Some of the information I've seen sort of explains how it will be possible. I wish I could remember the website I saw it on, so I could link it for you. I found it through Yahoo,, but I looked at two or three places, and I can't remember which one this information was on.

Anyway, it is fantasy, after all. All things are possible.:)

I said:
Ack!! It's not fantasy that does that - it's commercialism! ;)
If commercialism extends our enjoyment - rock on! It is when it extends something mediocre or the extension becomes mediocre that I dislike. I suspect that this isn't pure commercialism on Donaldson's part though. It seems to me that after many years of hearing his fans say "what about this" or "why didn't you talk about this character" or "what happened to..." that he finally has decided to go back and revisit the series. If it had been pure commercialism he would have done so during the initial furor over the series.

The wink shows that I was indeed just joking. :)

I haven't actually read any Donaldson, so I have no idea how another set of books would cover his universe. Was the Gap series a follow on to the Thomas Covenant novels?

This is ther only place I could find, without spending more than half an hour googling, that has info on the third series: http://kevinswatch.ihugny.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1401&sid=ffb7e028cbebc54ef04a699dbf821432

It's a thread on Stephen Donaldson forum, they seem to have got their info from SRD at a convention.

This is good news - the first two trilogies are among my favourite fantasy works, and it should be interesting to revisit that world and see how Donaldson takes the tale through.

That sounds like the same place I found, knivesout.

Brian - the Gap series came after the two trilogies by quite a bit of time. A two-book series (does two make a series?), "The Mirror of Her Dreams" and "A Man Rides Through", came in between, I believe. I've read the two Covenant trilogies and "Mirror" and "Rides", but I never could get into the Gap series. I read the first novel and liked it, but could never get past about page thirty or forty of the second volume and so just didn't pursue it. I've been thinking of going back and trying again.

The thing with Donaldson's writing is that it's quite uncompromising. Without giving anything away, some very harsh things happen in the Covenant books and Donaldson doesn't tiptoe around them or try to pretty them up. I like that attribute, personally. That's one of the reasons why I also like Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's Count Saint-Germain vampire novels. In both cases, even though they are fantasy and some quite unbelievable things happen, it still seems like they are happening in a real world, not in some fairy-tale world where everything is roses and rainbows and everybody lives happily ever after.

Feast for Crows by GRR Martin is due out...in April I think. I am also waiting for the second book by Greg Keyes in the Briar King Trilogy. I am sure Sara Douglass will have another book in one of her many series coming out this year. I enjoy most of her stuff. I have found Locus Magazine to be a great source for what's on the horizon.

I am starting the rewrite of the 50k word novel I wrote for NanoWriMo...just started today...I have a lot of work ahead, but I think it is a good story. I wrote a couple of short stories over the holdiays just to keep my fingers busy :)

My first post ever here...but as I'm an avid fan of A Song of Ice and Fire, I hate to disappoint the rest of you...it's doubtful that A Feast For Crows will be out by April...This is the latest from the man himself on his official website:

YES, I'M STILL WORKING ON IT. HONEST.
Well, 2003 has come to an end... but sad to say, A FEAST FOR CROWS hasn't.

I'm getting closer, though, page by bloody page. Yesterday I finished another chapter, the forty-first (though I do move these chapters around as I write, so it probably won't be the forty-first when FEAST is finally published). It's a Davos chapter, his second in the volume.

I now have 911 manuscript pages in something very close to final draft form. I also have about eight additional chapters in fragmentary form, a couple of them fairly close to completion. But there's more that will be needed after that. I don't believe in saying, "Okay, I've got X number of pages, that's enough, I'll end the book." Each volume is a part of the overall story, but also needs its own beginning, middle, climax, and end to make for a satisfying read. As I have said here before, I am writing as fast as I can, but my first priority is to make the novel as good as it be.

The moment the book is done I will announce it here. The instant. The second. So if you visit this website, and this notice is still in place, it means I'm still writing. Various websites and bookshops have announced various publication dates, but until the book is actually finished and delivered, they are all pure guesswork.

No one really knows when A FEAST FOR CROWS will be finished, or when it will be published. Especially not me. When I do, know, I'll tell you here. For now, though, the only answer must remain, "As soon as possible."

Once again, I'd like to thank all my readers for their patience and support.
