I think you'll find TG, that there are quite a few more mature students than you might imagine. when I did my degree, there was a chap of about 70 doing his first degree. He was younger and more full of get up and go than some of the 18 yr olds.
To be a bit serious though, the word 'old' has gathered up some terrible connotations to it. Everyone bandies that word around as though it was a terrible insult. We are a very age-ist society. There seems to be the idea that unless you are young (and these days this can mean under 30) or beautiful (getting back on the 'ugly' track slightly!) you can't be worth much.
Instead of using the word 'old' why not use the word 'mature'? And instead of people condeming someone because of the way they look, why not get beyond the common notion of beauty and see who a person really is? Perhaps this world would be a nicer place if we didn't condemn someone out of hand for the surface and fickle expectations our very prejudiced society has about what we should be or look like. These are societal constructs bolstered up by a media that wants to make money.
Mature (aka old) people have a great deal of experience in the world and a lot to offer, talk to an elderly person some time and you might find that some of the things they have done in their lives will knock your socks off!
PS Serena..... My sons say that you can be in on the will as long as you understand that £10 (10 British pounds sterling sort of equivalent to about $7 US Dollars for those who are confused) won't go very far!
The cheeky little blighters! I have a horrible fate in store for them!
