Why do SG-1 not carry zat guns? It seems they have lots of uses when bullets (ie projectiles and opposed to energy weapons) do not seem to be effective. They are not big so it seems strange. Also, why does Teal'c now carry any secondary weapons (ie a gun and only his unwiedly staff weapon?)

Good questions. My answer would be that they carry what is familiar to them and also, they probably don't have enough of the Zat guns or Staff Weapons to go around. They never seem to pick them up and bring them back when they can. <G>
The other reason could be that they are powered by liguid naquadah and the SGC has only very limited amounts of the stuff (if they have any at all from episode to episode). Until they get a good supply, they may be conserving what they have.

I would have thought they have quite a few zat guns by now, think of the number of times they have been used they are going to take them home. I think someone assembled a list of all the tech they had and it was quite a few. Either way, they have all the other teams that would probably have picked up a few.
They seem pretty proficient when using them as well, jack especially seems to have no problem with either them or staff weapons. I wonder why Teal'c dosen't carry one especially.

The liquid naquada bit, i guess so. How does that work exactly, they have to refil them?

The other thing i wondered about zat guns is if there is like a time limit before you die. If you get shot by 1 how long did you have to escape before the next one disintergrates you. I am sure some members of the sgc have been shot havn't they. You make a full recovery I assume so there must be a time limit

It appears to be that because the zat shoots out a condensed, focused, high powered electrical shock that it all depends on how each person's body can handle the shock. I'm assuming that once the intense power of the shock passes from a person's body (after an uncertain amount of time - like I said, all depends on how your body can handle it), then the person is in the clear. So once the effect of the first shock wears off, then the next time someone is zatted, it will be like being zatted for the first time.

That makes a lot of sense. Do you think wearing off time is about the same as the time it takes them to be able to stand up again? Otherwise if the sg-1 team ever get hit they need to hide for a while in case they get disintegrated!

I'm assuming so, considering that you'll need the electrical impulses from the zat gun (which fry and mess with your nervous system) to pass before you can even think about moving voluntarily. You wouldn't be able to stand up with your zatted nervous system running wild.

actually on the hole time wearing off point is good but the SGC does have more then one zat gun if ya'll remeber (i think) in an episode there was 4 of them on a table i just think they like using the good old made on earth artilary! any way if you haven't noticed teal'c can lose his staff wepon and on the next epiosed he has a spanhin' bran new one and it's also better lokin'! waz up with that?
actually the funtion of the zat gun (well what i'm i sayin' there's more than one!)... the funtioms of the zat gun can be any where from getaway gun ya zat the person and run away (not recomened if your being heled against will)(also if you've noticed if some one is against the person/thing being zated he getis is too) or to disintagrate some one
did you knoow that ther's actually settins 4 zat guns!
1= stun
2= kill
3= disintagrate molecular structrue
but any way that's just why i think

makes sense to me.
The "stun" to "kill" thing, i wonder if that is just a setting designed for humans, ie if you say fired it at an asgard (hehe) perhaps they would die straight away because they are smaller and the energy is going to do more damage. I wonder.... ((go on Jack, shoot an asgard so we can find out!)

Got a question for you. If the zat is a burst of electrical energy, or something like that, then how come the GDO that Jack took out of the box of stuff in 1969, still worked after he zatted the lock on the box? The energy surrounded the whole box and, I would think, would have to have some effect on what was inside considering three subsequent shots disintegrated the box and all that was in it.

I think to be honest that the zat guns features do not really work "scientifically".
Why?

1) To disintegrate something you are going to need soooooo much energy. The lowest energy thing would be to say vaporize everything but to vaporize a human body is bad enough, you need temperatures of well over 1000c to do that. There is no way those zat guns could carry that energy

2) One shot stuns, two shots kill. Strange that this is the same for everyone. Would 1 shot kill a baby? it seems unlikely that a burst of energy is going to have a result so discrete (ie yes/no dead/alive) when size of person etc is continous..

3) Does the zat gun just work on human tissue or no all stuff. If everything then why does the place a human is standing on not disintegrate as well? there is no reason to believe that there is some insulaion between the feet of the person and the floor that stops the energy traveling.

4) If just human tissue then why do clothese disintergate?

And more.. lots of incosistencience (i can not spell i know!) but never mind, it is only a show hehe.

I just put it down to the 'willing suspension of disbelief' and the fact that these guys can't think of everything. <G>

Much of the techno our team is not used to. They feel much safer with the weapons we currently use (which well do a really good job since no "Super Evolved" species has came up with defenses for it.) Overall that is why they use them cause species do not expect such a lowly evolved weapon. But if it wasn't for that they ALL should cary ZAT guns and the hand gun to be used by SAM the only reason she gets tired is that she is not used to the weapon. Once she gets better at it she won't tire as much. That of course is my opinion... SO common folks post!! and reply..

padders

I agree with the bit about sam but still think they should carry the zat gun as a secondary weapon.
It seems that in some situations a projectile weapon (gun) is good and in others that an energy weapons is good so carry both :)

(and Teal'c definitely should have something more manoeuvarable and discreet as well!)

Well in fact she has used the Hand Device several times and only the first instance did she drain. Afterwards the other times she used it Sam got better at it. Heck she killed a Goul'ld with it if you don't remember. I do wish to see her in the future with that weapon. It's more um.... usefull in certain situations.

thoes are awsoome pionts but hey do you actuallly belive that the good ol' usa will let them go with other pepoles technology? sure you see teal'c isn't from "here" and what about allthe millions of $ that the gov. spends that guns would be awsome to have around but fallen into the wrong hands .... wait they where made by the wrong ppl
any way about that energy charge bit i think that we're not suposed to think about that.
just imagine this @ a store " ZATNICKATELS 9.99!each"
but it's true they sould ALWAYS have one with them & sam soould be usin' the hand devise more often man just imagin sam wopin' some majoir alien ....(ooppppsss gotta control myself)
and i mean do you really think that they'll get their hands on all the zat guns that they need?

has any one noticed that the goaluds have a new product every episode or is it just me?(ie: new models 4 the staff & zat, new artialry) and that teal'c can drive/fly/use/... every thing that the goaulds have made EVEN THE NEW ONES!
ok i'm off the subject now so i'm gonna zip it

I do think, to clear up all the complaints about inconsistancies, that
1. In the EP 1969 - the reason why nothing in the box was hurt is because the energy was directed as the lock. the lock is made of different material so nothing else gets hurt. Then the reason why when he shot the box and it all disappeared is because the Zat Gun energy goes to a central point.

I.E. - When the person is shot, his whole body goes with it, and the energy travels from the outside of the body to the center. This not affecting the armor or whatever because it was not directly shot.
Now if you were to shoot the armor, the energy of it travels to a central point till the energy meets together again.

2. About the size - When a person is young, the electrical currents in our body travel differntly. As we age, it changes more. Well, a young child has more energy flowing in its body, so a zat blast would kill it in one shot. Kill it even more on another and desintegrate it on the third.

I hope this info helps. Anyone agree? Anyone lost?

MythingLink

Actually no.
Going by your hypothesis, if I'm reading it correctly, if you shoot armor (like what the Jaffa wear or Aris Boch wore) then the energy travels around the armor and then enters the body? Is that what you're saying? Or are you saying that when you shoot at armor, it only affects the armor and not the wearer? (Of course this one can't be it because the times they've used the zat on armored people have been numerous and they've all gone down.)

So if it's the first, then it would also apply to the box and the contents of the box and not just the lock.

Cheers,
