I hadn't seen 'Author, Author' back then. That episode gives loads of new trivia on all the characters. It spoilt my Seven of Nine story because it added stuff about her that I wasn't expecting.

Chakotay was born in 2335 'Tattoo' VOY.
Enters Starfleet Academy in 2350 'Tattoo' VOY.
Graduates Starfleet Academy in 2354 'Tattoo' VOY.
Although he attended Starfleet Academy, Chakotay resigned from the service in order to join the Maquis and fight in defense of his homeworld against the Cardassians. Exactly when he quit Starfleet is unknown, although it was after he graduated from the Academy, but before Voyager was lost in 2371, probably after the signing of the Cardassian peace treaty of 2370, first mentioned in 'Journey's End' TNG.
Father, Kolopak, dies in 2371 'Initiations' VOY.
