Hi, Skip!
Welcome! Felicitations! Hey, dude!
Need a Beta reader the threads over at fan fic can help, but you have to scroll down some as there is lots of fan fic to read and WRITE! (HINT)

We have a new Convention Forum for SG -1 Moderated by Gatecon! Pluss lots of toher forums. Many are new and you could be a first to post on many topics. If you don't see what you need, start a thread in the appropriate section with the Post subject header. You seem to be doing well. Starting threads and asking questions. Make comments too, we love to talk!

pre prouduction release. Normally applied to software. A beta is something that is fully working but probably buggy. Compare that to an alpha which is someting that is not complete.

So a beta anything is just something that needs to be checked by people first to find mistakes in it.

Very good padders. In fan fiction, beta's come in all shapes and sizes and should find out at the very beginning of doing a beta, what the writer is expecting.

Me I want it all ... really I want more of a full edit. Some only want grammer and spelling checked. Good beta's are a fan fic writer's best friend. Mine not only check what I write for spelling, grammer, continuity, characterization, etc., but they are also more of collaborators when I get into a situation I can't seem to write my way out of. Cokie, for instance, acts as a sounding board for almost all of my ideas and I know that she only has my best interests at heart when she makes suggestions. I generally follow them.

A beta and a writer should work together as a team. If you ask the more successful writers, they'll tell you that they couldn't do it without the help of their betas.

Cheers,

[quote[So Beta means like a preview?
Not really. In fan fiction writing, a beta is someone who gets to preview the work first, but they have a job to do and that is to find any mistakes that the writer has made before posting the story, or submitting it to a 'zine for publication. A preview, if you're thinking what they do with movies, is to put the work out there for a limited audience to get their reaction.

Think 'editor' rather than 'beta' and you'll get an idea.

Cheers,

are so a beta in fac fic is a person? A beta in computer software is the piece of software read to go to the betai testers (i was a beta tester for the game star craft. It meant playing the game and reporting any bugs/problems in it that we found. Kind of like quality control!)

OKay.

Funny how Skip never told us what the hell he was talking about :)

Ta

Cheers, I checked this thread first, but I did get her mess. Have a great day and ta agin!

the use of the word beta comes from the fact that beta is the second letter of the greek alphabet (alpha, beta, gamma..etc)

it is used to mean secondary...

beta reader...beta software...beta site :)

Beta male or beta female are also common terms in primatology and with ecologists.

Oh, that word again! Should I be offended that you compare me to a monkey? Spacemonkey also cultural stuff... freaky....
