Questions for Gatecon 2001

Planning for cons...

Good idea, folks. We'll just figure out where everyone lives and premake reservations to crash in their living room if the Con is close enough.

And when Ghod gets us through this next year, we can start this 'looking process' all over again. :}

Welcome Back, Boss...

Nice to see you with your head above water... so to speak... :}

Coincided the 2002 (Fall?) Gatecon in Colorado with the Denver Stock Show ... and I'm there! :)

Well, the nice thing about having the con in Vancouver is the covenience for cast and crew to get there. I don't think you'd get as many crew members ,production staff or actors if they have the inconvenience of having to travel 100's or thousands of miles, and then go back to work on Mon., and most of the production and crew members don't have the priviledge of a hiatus.

Times and locations for cons

Yeah, the location *and* time are big considerations. Unlike most tv shows, SG-1 has an 'odd' shooting season: Feb through mid Oct. Seems some folks get this hankering for winter sports, like sking. :}

To catch them off the production season may make some of them more accesable to longer trips, but really puts the cost of the con up: transportation, hotels and such. One of many reasons why 2001 is still in Vancouver. They can bop over to the Con, go home and be reading for shooting on Monday. Not counting any other personal projects they may have planned to do during the hiatus of filming. Michael Shanks doing 'Hamlet', for example.

Now ... with 2002, we're looking at spreading the venue location out with one staying in the Vancouver, BC area [I believe... I just working on getting next year ready] and one moved down Stateside.

One thing I *have* learned: Sept, Oct and Nov. are bad times to try and book a con as just about every large venue has big corporate projects coming into their locations. There's much more flexability if we look out of that window. The way Stargate Productions books their shooting season, that fits out needs a bit better.

There are pro's and cons to a lot of different ideas. I feel quite comfortable in saying that GateCon Productions is looking for the best possible combination of con size, cost and guest availability for next year and the years after.

certainly seems like you have it all figured out. I look forward to coming to one.

I knew there was a reason why I liked having Rowan on board. Isn't she just the best at making things sound so simple. I would have stuffed around for hours trying to write a cohesive reply like that.

Thanks Rowan, not only for clear and concise replies, but also for the hard work and effort (especially over the past week or so).

That black and tan is definitely on me. :-D

We all appreciate Rowan and her hard work. Most of us on this board understand about the limits of budget, guest availability, time schedules, facility limitations and other realities and acknowledge them ... but we still express our dreams.

Besides who else can even have a chance of getting RDA to attend? I can think of no one else. YOU PEOPLE ARE GREAT! THANK YOU!

Dream ...

I appreciate your words, but thank Fryn, Richard, Allan and Sue. It was their dream that made this all possible.

Me? I'm a happy staff 'go-fer' ... :}

times etc?

I've just filled in and sent my booking form....... <g>

just wondering about things like the bus tour I heard about? how does that fit into the schedule? when does the con actually begin - evening of 20th , morning? at what time will it finish? etc. the booking form asked if we wanted a hotel room and for how long. Well I don't know until I know what's happening and where it is.....

I'll be coming from the UK and maybe dragging a non sci fi husband along for a "just the two of us" holiday without the kids (yes, I've kindof mentioned the con to him in passing <g>)So I really don't know how long we would need a room for and stuff like that. Any idea when we might have more info about it all?

Just want to have all my options in view before we start booking flights etc.

Of Strikethroughs and such...

Diane, there will always be some last minute scheduling changes, but registration is scheduled to open the morning of the 20th. and the Con's last day - Sunday - will probably fold around 1700-ish [5:00PM]. The hotel under negotiation will set aside a block of room priced at 'convention discount rates' to become avail on the 18th of Sept [mayvbe a day earlier... we'll make it finial here in a few days].

There will be much more specific room information when we've got the finial hotel contract in our hands.

There's quite a bit to do in the Vancouver, BC area. To help make plans for the both of you, there's a miling list on egroups that I co-moderate called 'GateGoers': it's comprised of fans going to the Con and making plans for trips, parties and the like. You can find them at http://www.egroups.com. To subscribe, send an email to
gategoers-subscribe@egroups.com or send me your e-mail address and I'll sub you on.
