slang in the future
This same question came up on an 'Andromeda' mailing list not so long ago.
It raised a lot of good points but it boiled down to one very good answer from one of the writers assistants.
A: Everyone aboard Andromeda speaks Common, not English. It is translated not literally, but idiomatically (which means that while they might actually be saying a Vedran saying like, "Don't attack until you're within the sounds of their hooves", it would be translated to "Don't shoot till you see the whites of their eyes" which would be a more familiar saying to us) through your tv.
Many words and phrases we use today have their origins far back in time, sometimes 'really' far. So, why is it hard to believe that those words, and perhaps a few new ones (those from 'our' time), would make it into their century?

I have had this conversation on other boards. On a Spider-Girl Board I was stated that modern pop shows would be forgooten by then. And on Dark Angel how all of the Black Characters were using slang in the future that is out of date today. At least the Andromada TPB says that everything we hear is translated.

LOLLOL!! Slang is funny, especially when you try and figure it out several hndred years later. I keep waiting for Creighton to have some one translate "Give A Shout Out" or "pigeon" or "dogg" so I can hear what they are saying in universal. Talk about layering the cultures!

ya know i pulled up the slanguage for kansas city mo...which is only 60 miles away and i've lived here all my life...man these guys are off.
o-lay-tha as county seat, they're referring to olathe which is part of kc
kay-see-mo refers to kansas city missiouri not to be confused by k-c-k which is kansas city kanass...something you gotta do when one city is in two states...they're divided by state line blvd by the way
slab refers to a slab of ribs, which kc happens to be famous for.
and i have no idea how they get mo-you for kansas state university, which is known as ksu and is 90+ miles away.

course slang is sorta funny in a way. one sure way i can tell if a fic is from a brit (other than all the extra vowels) is car park(parking lot), boot (trunk), lift (elevator), plus lots others.
oh, i did read this one fic (and no offense meant if the author is lurking here, i thought it was funny) who had cheyenne mountain in wyoming. i mean there is a cheyenne wyoming, i've been there (though there's not much in wyoming but open space) but they had their fic set there.
i often find reading non-american fic enlightening. it's interesting how other people see our country(and i speak as some who's never been out of the usa)
