Finding the 7th chevron - did they screw up?

that's also why you'd need 6 points instead of 4, because the intersections would be too inprecise without an additional line converging.
But my point (above) is that a 4-way intersection IS still an intersection. Which means it meets, in one place. etc. ;)

Your idea about needing 6 would work if the glyphs represent sources for lines which DON'T intersect, at least, not very accurately. In that case, six nearby lines will come roughly together, and then, as suggested, it "looks" for a gate. And why some of the local gates didn't need to have their addresses upgraded due to spacial drift.

PS. Noted elsewhere by me: how come all the glyhps are of CURRENT star formations, that will have otherwise changed over time. Especially say 10 thousand years...

Just went through the board 'archives' and found this thread.

To answer (well, rather, to find a theory) the question, think of it like this..

The researchers start dialing.
Chevron 1 is locked.
Chevron 2 is locked.
Chevron 3 is locked.
Chevron 4 is locked.
Chevron 5 is locked.
Chevron 6 is locked.
Okay, now, at this point, the entire room is shaking.
Question is,
would you want to try your luck and lock a random 7th symbol on an ancient ominous ring that makes the ground shake?

(Am I making any sense here?)

Obviously yes - otherwise they wouldn't have brought Daniel onto the programme to find out how to continue the dialling sequence. They knew they needed something - which could easily mean keeping going. [And as stated above, several features of the film indicate they were ready and waiting for a seventh symbol, they just couldn't find it.]

ya, just on a side note, you said teh ground was shaking... and they found a way to compensate for that, the harmonic thingy, now would a DHD solve that, cause the gate doesn't shake anywhere else.

No, no, I meant that they might have been afraid of what was going to happen if they dialed a wrong address.
I mean, the ground was shaking, which suggested that the 'Gate was powering up.
They had no idea what was going to happen if they got it right (although I think they already had the idea that it was a gateway of some sorts)
so they would have even less idea what was going to happen if they got it WRONG.
I mean, the 'Gate might explode or something..
So just to be on the safe side, they decided they will wait until the 7th symbol is confirmed.

Despite the possibilities of a bomb, they KNEW (or VERY strongly suspected it was a transport device),

a) because otherwise there would have been more shielding
b) they wouldn't have a ramp ready
c) or a prototype MALP ready
d) or have the biodisintegration scanner ready
e) or all the astro-navigation charts and trackers

But, in reconsideration, given the power involved, they may have been sensible and decided to wait.

Who are we kidding?? This is the US military, who laugh at computer models and would rather just test fire missiles/bombs and see what happens. They are sufficiently gung-ho, even with strong shaking, to just try-it-and-see.... IMHO!

Well, who knows?
I guess they should've explained (in other words, make something up for Carter to say ;)) in the movie or AT LEAST in the series (I mean, they haven't brought it up in 5 years!)

lol.. i like your point about the us military!!!!

but yes they should have brought it up...

on a side, not, wouldn't it be kinda funny if there was a real stargate.. so its sorta like the 100th episode...., lol.. imagine a bluf, of a bluf, of a bluf!
