thats what a lot of people say, but its suprising how many people say that they didn't even know tasmania isn't a state of australia, didn't they leave tasmania off the olympic coin or something, there was a huge uproar on the news over here about that!

I swear Tasmania's a state. It is right ??

Then again, geography really isn't my strong point.

geography isn't anyone's strong point :)
anyways, Australia Day is commin up, does anyone actually know what we are celebrating?

isn't it the federation of states (i'm not too good at history, well australian history, either) htis year is the centenary isn't it??

i dunno, but then again, i don't really care
i'm sure it has something to do with that barton guy :)

January 1 will be the centenery of federation. It's been 100 years since we became our own country instead of a British colony. They're gonna have some huge parade in Sydney and stuff, with people dressed up in colonial clothes. There's all this stuff going on here in Canberra as well. There's going to be a big celebration down at parliament house and then fireworks on Lake Burley Griffin. Should be good, Canberra has really great fireworks displays.

oh.... well i didn't know that, but it sounds really intersteing....... :)

well what happened on Australia day then?

26 January is the day the First Fleet sailed up Port Jackson, anchored in Sydney Cove and started the white settlement of New South Wales.

(I don't mean this to sound rude but what do they teach you (or don't teach as the case may be) down there in South Australia? I would have thought this was basic knowledge. Or is it just not politically correct to acknowledge our history these days?)

Hey, no it's not just SA, I didn't really have a clue either and I'm from WA.

At least we have something in common Marty :D

ahh, well we now know the differences! (watched some of the celebrations on TV today, damn thatr Mike Whitney!

yest it most certainly is a state of aus. granted the smallest state (excluding the act)

martouf were you joking?

Someone told us that Tas wasn't a state.

Can anyone remember who it was ??

Isn't Tassie that little bit that gets left of the map :D

yes TASMANIA is definately a state of Australia with a population of about 600 000 people. not that many. and we often do get left out of maps, olympic coins etc...

Man, getting left off the map really sux :D

It's ironic that the ACT is smaller yet its there on every map don't ya reckon :D

Hmmm, we couldn't have a black hole where Canberra is......or maybe we do.......

My father's from Tassie and my husband has relatives down there so I only poke fun with tongue firmly in cheek. It's easy to rile Tasmanians about getting left off the map.

Try leaving Sydney off the map and see what would happen. :D Could make NSW a better place :D

Correction

WOULD make NSW a better place. :D
