Iris response time

Is it just me or do SG1 usually dial up and walk stright through when off world. (I know they send an IDC signal that we dont always see). But when we see an off-world activation, they often take up to 30 secs to decide whether or not to open it, meanwhile the guy at the other end conveniently waits until the iris gets opened before coming through.

The S4 episode, Double Jeopardy highlighted this for me, they ummed and errd for ages when they got the "cumtrayta" signal, but somehow he knew to wait until the iris was opened before coming through.....
