I was wondering what peoples thoughts about how Stargate appeals to both guys and girls, I have noticed that many other sci-fi based shows tend to pull mainly guys...like Voyager ect..what is it about Stargate that captures the imagination of both sexes.
I think that it is because Stargate is more real or more beleivable and the characters are easy to relate to...what does anyone else think.

Well, for me, a girl (no smirks from you youngsters), there's a certain attraction with grey hair and a wicked sense of humour.

But hey, I've been into science fiction and ancient history all my life so this show neatly falls into the must watch category.

I agree that the characters are easy to relate too. Just everything about the show is just so gosh darn good(vocabulary modified to avoid being reported to the moderator).

Anyway, welcome to the boards, seand. It's a great place. I'm sure jsc will fill you in a bit more if she hasn't done so already. Have fun!!! :)

I agree, there is something special and compelling about the characters, especially Jack(grey hair, twinkling eyes, quirky mannerisms and great one liners gosh am I getting carries away here or not. I just think the man is great, which makes for a great show.

Jack, Jack, Jack, Jack, Jack, Jack, Jack, Jack.........

Nah, seriously. I think it's so appealing to both sexes because of the well structured characters. There is always an in depth emotion between the characters and everything that unfolds in their 'world'. Also, the idea of going to other planets and finding all sorts of new, interesting and exciting stuff is appealing to any member of the human race.

smirks at cat :)

i agree, i think it is a guy/gal show, there is no reason to suggest that guys like sci-fi. im a guy, and all of my mates love sci-fi even the girls, its probably a tassie thing, but from what ive seen, its popular for both sexes down under.

I have many female friends that can't stand shows like Star Trek and Farscape but nearly all at least like Stargate if not love it....must be that grey haired...years of experience look????
My partner will not sit with me to watch Voyager...."What's this CR..P on TV" is usually what she will say, yet she quite enjoys watching Stargate with me...who wouldn't is all I can say.
Yes...I admit that I love to watch Carter....mmmmmm... just like most of you gals like 'old silver hair'..(He is pretty cool though).

She tells me she likes the story line and that the characters are very REAL, but she also thinks the way I do in that the whole Egyptian mythology tied up with Stargate is something we beleive in.

The show is not screening at the momment where I live and who knows when it will...so now I will have to introduce her to the joys of Stargate on video.

From this woman's point of view (speaking for myself, not all women), I think that all of the characters are portrayed with a feeling of equality.

Both the men and women characters treat each other with respect. SG-1 are definitely a team in every sense of the word. They each contribute aspects of their own strengths to make the team more solid. They show initiative and each can step up and be the leader when the situation calls for it.

So back to the woman thing. . .It just jives with my love of a collaborative effort in problem solving and personal relationships.

my mere thoughts

This is a short version of an answer that could be very long if I thought about it a bit more.

The guys that I know that watch the show love all the action. I'm sure there are other reasons too.

I love the show for a certain grey haired sex god. But obviously thats not the only reason I watch it. I love all the action too. I love the interaction between the leads, I love how they have all changed throughout the seasons. I love the Goa'ulds, I love all the Egyptian mythology, I love the fact its sci-fi but not set a million years into the future, and I love the fact that its believable - how do we know what governments gets up to and what they are hiding from us??!!??

Thats it for now......

Carkedit, good points!

Particularly that one about "a certain grey haired sex god" :D :D :D

I agree with all of you for the reasons to watch the show. Stargate really has something special. I started watching the show to start with because of That witty gray haired fellow, even though he wasn't gray at the start. I have been a Sci-Fi fan for as long as I can remember, and that's going back quite a ways. I have also been an RDA fan since McGyver. I am also a military brat and like history to some extent, as long as it's interesting. There's a petition out trying to get seasons 6 & 7 contracted. I found it by clicking on the icon to vote for my favorit site when I got into this BB. check it out. :)....KGB

Okay, we have enough Jack fans here... Time to bring in a Danny fan! ;-) Seriously, though, I love the interaction between all the characters. They're all "real" to me. Even Teal'c. He's not overly emotional, yet nor is he an automaton. I can accept how they respond to situations. I can respect their slight flaws and imperfections. I also love the "believability" factor that comes with the show being set in the here and now. I've been a SF fan for - well, for as long as I can remember. However, I admittedly have my moments when I'm just not in the mood for far out aliens, and futuristic worlds. I'm also a huge fan of history, so the blending of these two aspects is absolutely perfect for me.

I've loved Stargate since seeing the original movie. I absolutely LOVED the idea of wormholes to other planets. My biggest complaint about all the Star Trek shows was they so rarely visited less advanced societies, and rarely truly explored the strange new worlds they always promised to. Voyager has been a HUGE disappointment to me, because they keep bumping into advanced cultures! Where's the variety in the universe??? Not all planets evolve at the same rate!!

I became interested in the series because of the movie, AND because of RDA's involvement. Yes, I said I was a Danny fan; but I'm also a Jack fan, I'll admit it. I love 'em both! I've liked RDA since his GH days (lol!) And there's a certain "attraction" to sandwiching myself [age-wise ;-) ] directly in between the two of 'em!

Though I've been into SF for so long, Stargate is directly responsible for bringing me into fandom. This is the only show I've been able to watch over and over again, without getting bored. Most shows, I watch it once, enjoy it, but then I've had enough. "Oh, I've seen this episode. It's a rerun. Let's watch something else." Not so with SG!!

Okay, 'nuf said, and I've really got to run!

for me...well first of all they're good characters. they're well thought out and developed (some more and better than others but....) they're 'real' people. none of them are perfect and all have their faults, which makes them so much fun to watch.
the way they interact with each other is great too.

and the show is grounded in fact. yeah i know it's sci-fi but...well up until the point they actually go through the gate it's all real. they wear real clothes, live in a real city, (even though theit colorado springs looks a LOT like canada), cheyenne mountain is real, as is norad and the air force. with the exception of nice conventint sci-fi tech they solve stuff the good oldfashioned way...they figure out an answer or blow it up...and to me it's much much more believable than a ship flying through the stars 300 years in the future...everytime i've been in colorado springs i catch myself looking for jack, sam, danny & teal'c...

and the fact that i get 45 minutes of jack drool a week has NOTHING to do with it ;)
in fact a couple of years ago when sg was just being offered to syndication my general manager at the time asked me if i would watch the show. now bear in mind i didn't have showtime at the time so all i knew was the name but when he showed me the poster with rda on it i said 'for 45 minutes of rda a week, heck yes i'll watch'

jack drew me in...the rest of the guys keep me there.(and they can keep me as long as they want)

Carkedit, ditto on everything, except that Danny is the god!...
(not that i dont totally love RDA..)
i love the action, and the mystery of going to new worlds..
and the fact that yes, who knows what the government is really doing is very intriguing...
for me too, stargate is the only series that has gotten me this involved.. on a par as a great sci fi series, its not as good as B5 as far as the writing and the story lines, but the characters and the action have drawn me thoroughly in...

Richard Dean Anderson's stuck in a room with a bolted door and all he has to escape with is dental floss, and a tub of yoghurt. Wait.... wrong show.

Seriously though, I think a lot of females watch it because they have RDA, and they also have someone on the show giving a female perspective on things (Carter).

RDA stuck in a bolted room with yoghurt...Now there's something I'd like to be a part of......

Sorry..wishful thinking...*clears throat*

Carter is cool...she's a strong woman with a feminine side. The ultimate female warrior!!

But RDA still rocks......hehehe

'Carter' stuck in a bolted room with yogurt...now I can imagine that.
I have loved Carter from the first episode I saw of Stargate...she is so powerful..she would have RDA on toast for breakfast....sorry!!!....now the girls will have that on their minds. I'm all for women having that powerful side and not being afraid to use it...take voyager with Janeway...she is powerful and holds here own.
Everyone trusts Carter and look to her for answers all the time...she is just so darn sexy too.
Stargate shows that men and women can work together without the stigma of "the man is the boss".
He is though.......nah just joking girls.
I am also surprised at the age differences that Stargate fans are.....maybe it is also because of the comments put forward in this thread.....anyone else with a view.

What the heck's happened to the site?!
Nah, it looks very good, I'm not complaining.
Hey, this thing has spell check, no more spelling wrong 'cos I can't be bothered to get a dictionary.

Hmm, I don't know why it appeals to both sexes, maybe because it doesn't just have action or 'typical' SF, but other stuff as well, like good drama and emotion.

I love the interplay between Jack and the T-man too..

I do think Danny is getting too serious though..last few episodes he's been, well, pretty miserable really. Not that I'm knocking Danny..good looking guy...just a bit 'young' LMAO. Like his comic touches when he has them - they are pretty classic. - 'umm, the suns beeping', 'he read your report?' are just a couple of things I liked.

There you go, thats another thing I like about Stargate - the comedy!!

Your opinion of Daniel interests me, carkedit, only I don't know what LMAO stands for.
