LOTR vs The Hobbit

Definitely. It's hard to appreciate elements of LOTR without having read the Hobbit - not least the tragedy of Moria.

It adds such a huge dimension to LOTR. Without it, there are pieces missing. I agree with scalem x, it should be read. Not necessarily first, but read all the same.

I'm not a big Tolkien as a writer fan. I love the world of Arda he created, but I don't think he was a great author.
 
I don't have time to read The Hobbit.... I have at least thirty books lying around in my room that I still have to read.
 
Aye, to the pile, good man! And on top, to boot...

I read The Hobbit first (13yrs old). Wonderful. Left me wanting more. Unintentionally allowed a little time to pass before getting into the LoTR. Smashin'. Left me wishing for far too much... The Silmarillian and The Unfinished Tales, in that order, blew me away. The latter two Ive reread far far more than the previous two. And I hope that sums up my view. "Those literary vistas...!"

When I was first read the Hobbit, as a youngling by my father, it made little sense to me and I failed to understand the plot. After watching the Lord of the Rings film however, I felt inspired to read both the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trillogy. I read the Hobbit and found it a enthralling read, and then the trillogy was just as epic and fantastic as I had imagined. This is why the trillogy in particular, is my favourate book, as much as it is also my favourate film.
 
This seems very similar to other threads in this series. I loved The Hobbit and couldn't put it down but have struggled with LOTR (read about a third). Am determined to pick it up again one day and continue. Perhaps it will improve as I get stuck back into it again.
 
The Hobbit was the first book I actually read from cover to cover when I was about 12. I was (and still am) enthralled by it! This naturally lead on to reading LOTR which blew me away even more! So I can't really say I like one more than the other as they seem like a continuous story to me!..
 
I read the hobbit when i was young and the lotr in my teens and felt that the hobbit was more enjoyable experiance by far,ive recently re~read them and nothings changed
