I was just wondering, but what exactly are the reasons that Micheal Shanks, or Richard Dean Anderson are so unlikley to go? As I've heard before RDA might have something to do with the upcoming strike, but I don't exactly understand why he couldn't come. Micheal on the other hand I have heard no reasons for. Since the convention is like right there, I simply don't understand why they wouldn't attend. It seems that Amanda, and Christopher are regular convention attendees, yet why not the other two? It just doesn't seem the same without them - afterall SG-1 is a team, and that's the way we'd like to see them. Isn't there anyone out there in the filming, or convention world that could let them know how much it would mean to the fans? Understandably life comes up, but it would be great if they could! Maybe I'm just dreaming.

The strike you mentioned is the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) strike. We should know by the end of july what the outcome is.

But this really has nothing to do with Michael or Richard not wanting to come to conventions.

Richard, apparently had a very bad experience at a MacGuyver convention a few years back, and has turned him off the whole convention thing. Quite understandable really.... It really does highlight how much damaged a small group of crazed fans can cause (or even in some cases an individual).

Michael is said to be so shy in public, and he just feels uncomfortable at things like conventions.

Whatever their reasons, we must respect the decisions they make, and we as fans have no rights to critisize their choices.

Although they do know about the conventions around, and they do know how much fun they could have.... Apparently all they heard for weeks at the studio was everyone talking about how much fun they had at Gatecon, and in talking to the studio, it is common talk there.

We would love to have both Richard and Michael at Gatecon, and at any Stargate Convention (Wolf or BOBW), but the decision is theirs.

Richard mentioned on the Lycos chat, that he will try and make it to Gatecon, but he is a very busy man, and Gatecon (and Wolf in november) sadly fall around the time of year when they are wrapping things up at the studio, and with Richard holding the position he does, makes it hard for him to get away from his work.

Here's hoping that either or both can make it.

Thank you for some of that insight. It is unfortunate to hear of RDA's experience at a former convention. It is too bad that people wreck things like that for the actors, also similar to the experiences Micheal has had on his fanclub site. I wish people could learn restraint, and respect instead of pushing the envelope, and turning off these guys to such experiences. I know I speak for most of the fans out there, when I say that it is a real loss to the fans when others behave in such ways. Now the rest of us have to pay the price for others' stupidity. I respect both of their decisions if they don't want to expose themselves to anything like that again, but I would like it to be known throughout the Stargate community thatmost people would give them a very warm reception if they decided to show up.

I hope that a few bad apples haven't spoiled the batch for everyone else. This is a television show after all, and the conventions exsist for us to gather as a community of fans, and enjoy ourselves.... it's too bad some of us haven't always let the people we admire so much do the same!

Iceycat, what you have said is so true.....

As fans, there must be a 'code' that we all follow.

There are way too many people out there that claim to be fans, but all they seem to want to do is create a fictional world for themselves where they beleive they are owed something, simply because they think they are the ultimate fan.

I think some people beleive that making up stories will make them a more popular person, or give them some sort of status within their 'community'... be it stargate or whatever.

I have to make the point that the stars of the shows we like and watch owe us nothing, except their thanks for making that show popular.

Some fans can be so overbearing... My advice to them, is take a step back and take a good hard look at themselves, and the possible trouble they are causing, and the ramifications of those actions on other well-meaning fans.

I have heard of the trouble with MSOOF, and my only comment on this, is Michael would have only done something like this if he really had justification for his actions.

People like Michael and Richard must treasure their privacy so much... I wouldn't blame them if they never wanted to come to any conventions.

I know when we were in talks with Stargate Productions about Richard possibly coming to Gatecon 2000, the bulk of the talk was about security, and you'd be shocked at the amount of security we needed to provide for him if he decided to come. And we were ready to provide it.

Our first priority at our conventions is the security of the stars who attend. Many people critisized our use of security, and said that the presence was too much... but when it comes to the safety of these guys, nothing is left to chance.

Sorry... I've waffled on a bit, but this is a subject I could go on for hours about.

I Know What You Mean...

Yes, I definitely agree with what you are saying Allan. There are fans, whether they are SG1 or other series fans, who push it past the respectible limit. I've found from my past experiences in organizing conventions that these types of fans are very much on the fringe of fandom and like you both have said, its a shame because of their outrageous and ignorant behavior, they ruin it for the rest of us.

I think that part of the problem does lie in the fact that some of these fans have a bit of a problem deciphering between what is real and fiction. As you've alluded, they tend to think that the show they are watching is real and that the actors playing the parts are really those characters. They believe the whole thing to be real. Its sad when fans believe to this extent.

I attended GATECON last year and it was good to see many of the cast appear, and having organized cons myself (Dr Who cons in particular), I really do appreciate it when a celebrity or production member takes the time to appear at a con.

By the same degree, many real admirers can be put off by the actions of extreme fans as well. I for one, have avoided attending fan conventions up to now. I thought long and hard about attending the Stargate conventions because some of the experiences I have had on the forums and lists have been very bad indeed. Outright hostility and even hate mail on occasions when I have given a few thoughts out. I'll be honest with you and say that I find many Stargate fans scary indeed. Especially the fans who admire the characters and actors to the exclusion of the original concept. (Not that I am saying you shouldn't admire an actor for his/her skill, in fact the actor I remember and admire the most from the series was only a very occasional character... Ron Halder, who played Cronos... I think he has a fine acting presence which could only be gained from classical stage training. But I think that given the chance he could act circles around the rest!)

The show should be fun and thought provoking, not engender these extreme reactions which turns off both actors AND other fans.

I have in fact decided to attend Wolf SG3 this year and am also considering Gatecon, since I have job interviews in Vancouver following the Gatecon weekend. I'm still a little put off and wary about going. I'm not a great one for drooling, but I'm willing to be persuaded that I will enjoy the experience.

Anni,

Maybe you should really concider gatecon then....

Ron Halder will be joining us this year (commitments pending).

Like you, most of my favorites on the show are the ones with the smaller parts.... Both Carmen Argenziano and Ron Halder are two that I have liked well before their Stargate days, and I think the pinnacle of their career has been shown in Stargate SG-1.

It's great that both Ron and Carmen will be joining us this year.

Well, I am on the point of buying a ticket...... But one thing I DO hope, is that the SG1 series isn't the pinnacle of Ron's or Carmen's careers! I understand from subsequent enquiries(although there isn't much out there!) that Ron Halder is an accredited stage, TV, Shakespearean actor and well known fight director, but is mainly known in your part of the world. Of course, we in the UK have never heard of him and never would have in my case, had it not been for Stargate. Which is a great shame......

It would be nice to see him in something other than Stargate and as a stage actor since what he has done for TV doesn't appear to have given him much chance to show his expertise in his craft. Which only indicates that he is a good actor indeed to make me remember him so distinctly from the first Stargate show he was in.

Pinnacle so far I mean. They are undoubtedly going to move onto bigger and better roles well after Stargate.... It really shows their diversity as actors.

I have seen Ron in other roles but can't for the life of me can't remember exactly what. Carmen first came to my attention a few years back in Knight Rider 2000 (not that i'd ever admit to that ;))

See what I mean though? You remember the actor but you don't offhand remember the roles. Many would say that they can't be very good at their job, but for me it means the exact opposite.

I remember seeing Anthony Hopkins in UK TV roles, but I couldn't tell you what they all were. Just that he, as an actor, stuck in my mind and I wanted to see more of his performances. However, then I saw him on stage at the National Theatre and I knew straight away that he was a fine performer. Then when he became a 'movie star' I obviously knew who he was but still think he has the same sort of presence. Kenneth Branagh is completely unmemorable in his films for me, yet on stage he is superlative! Judi Dench is another. I can't remember any film she has made and the TV shows are completely unmemorable, but I remember her.

Sorry Allen......I am babbling, but. as a former professional musician and VERY amateur actress in my younger days, I am a true admirer of the actor's craft and for me, they don't have to be famous for me to admire them. I don't often get the chance to discuss anything like this with anyone, because they all think I'm a little crazy. I supposed to like someone because they have a handsome face or nice blue eyes, and while I do notice good looks, they are not the important thing for me.

I'll stop babbling now............

:D

Thanks Anni, it's actually been a refreshing conversation.

I am the same in many ways.. I too did my amateur acting days.. actually, if it had anything to do with theatre... I practically did it. I tried my hand at trying to be a professional musician... But the emphasis is on TRY !!!! I'd never make a living from it... My family would starve LOL

Mostly for me... The actors I admire the most are the ones that have done the legwork and got the experience through... well... Experience !!!

If there is one person in this world that I could just sit and talk to for hours is Don S. Davis... and I did get to have a nice long talk to him earlier this year. Just the sheer talent that he posesses, both on and off screen.

Look... Now you've got ME babbling LOL

What am I trying to say ? AH Yes... I agree with you :)

Ha ha ha! Keep babbling babe......it's been a really nice conversation for me too!

Actually I DID make my living as a professional musician from the age of 13, right up to the age of 29. Performed with my band all around Europe, did musical shows, appeared with big bands, but if I say Herb Alpert, please don't mock me. I appeared on stage with him and did a duet of 'This guy's in love with you' on stage in South Africa when I was 15!

Since then I have worked with folk like Stevie Wonder (did some backing sessions for him in London studios) - he was lovely to work with, did a support gig with my band to Eric Clapton, after which he told me, very engimatically, 'you're good, one of the best female blues singers I've seen....take some advice, lose the band!' and I am good mates with Brian Johnston out of AC/DC. His band (pre AC/DC) and mine used to do the English North Eastern Working Men's clubs and he used to come and watch me perform and sing. He said that I 'oozed sultry blues sex' over the stage. Sounded rather disgusting, but I think I know what he meant! LOL LOL

Then I joined the army, but that's entirely another story!

back traking a bit, does anyone know WHAT the bad experience at a convention for RDA was? & what could anyone say bad about Shanks?

Watching the profile on Daniel Jackson, Michael talks about how the SG1 team are often seen as gods when they come throught the gate, & how it is humbling to be put on a peddastool by other humans or beings....I wonder if he's alluding to real life? Perhaps he's not coming to conventions & is shy because people are doing that to him in real life? Any comments?

I really don't know the details about what happened. But it sure looks like it was something that rattled him.

As for Michael, again, I really don't know. All I know is that he really is a very shy person.

The other 'thing' that was mentioned about Michael, wasn't that someone said bad things, but it seems that some person(s) too the liberty of 'inventing' truths about Michael.. or more like un-truths. Michael found out about them, and was very upset by them. It's things like this that make it doubly hard to get people like Michael and Richard to conventions.

Not to start a feeding frenzy, but MS at Comicon San Diego July 21?

The MGM Stargate Website has an official-looking announcement about Michael Shanks doing his first public appearance at the San Diego Comicon on July 21.

So even though the guy is shy and has had some bad experiences with rabid random or other oddities in the past...

I had already decided to visit the Comicon that weekend (a friend has been trying to get me to go for the past two years) but now I know I will try to be in the right place at the right time.

I only sincerely hope that fans' enthusiasm at the event is positive without being overwhelming or foaming-at-the-mouth-rabid, and doesn't scare him away from future cons...

It's great news isn't it....

But a bit of a shame he will go to a comic con (with no official SG-1 comics), but won't go to a SG-1 con in his own city (although I do think it has something to do with his contract with MGM).

Hey... What you will have to do is be real nice to Michael there, and show him we are a great bunch, and try to convince him to come to Gatecon.

I'm not a fan of Michael's at all, but it does seem rather illuminating that he will attend the Comicon in San Diego, but avoid Gatecon. The fact that it might be considered a 'contractual' obligation, isn't really relevant in my opinion. (For what that's worth!)

To my mind, it doesn't really matter if he has been put off by rabid Stargate fans, there are plenty of fans out there who would treat him with respect, and I'm sure that the Gatecon organisers would (and do) do everything possible to ensure the safety and security of their guests.

Perhaps MS needs to take a good hard look at his actions, and if he IS reluctant to go to a Stargate convention in his home city because he's afraid he may have a nasty experience, then all the more reason for him to bite the bullet and go and see for himself. I'm sure that you, Allan and your staff are more than capable of making sure that nothing untoward happens.

But attending one convention, which has nothing to do with his main TV series, then avoiding Gatecon is a little bit of a slap in the face for Gatecon and the Stargate fans.

Sorry, but in my opinion, that perhaps isn't the most diplomatic of actions to take.

And I certainly don't mean any offence to any MS fans out there.

This is just the kind of thing that I was talking about though. Because Micheal does Stargate, that's where we expect him to be. I think he just doesn't enjoy having to live up to all of these expectations. How sick must he be of hearing Daniel should do this, or you should have him act like that. His whole reason about bieng a bit reclusive from some of his fans is that when he does make, an appearance, or a comment he is judged, and criticized. So he wants to go to Comicon, so what. Maybe he enjoys comics, or whatever.

Sure we'd love to see him at Gatecon, but this is a perfect example, after all who are we to say he should be here, and not there. As fans we have to understand that we don't have any right to expect the actors to behave any certain way, or do certain things. If in our dialy lives we had people constantly telling us what they think we should do, and when we should do it our average feeling would be to tell all these people to go stick their head in a blender.

I think the idea of those fans that do attend Comicon just giving Micheal the respect he desrves, and JUST letting him know politley that we'd all love to see him at Gatecon is the best way of handling it. Showing him that we won't judge him, or critize him is the best way of getting the chance to meet him. We have no right to expect him to be there, but maybe we could ask.

My plan...

Since I was planning on writing a thank-you letter to him via the fanmail address I found online anyway, I'm just hoping to hand deliver it at the Comic Con. I don't want an autograph or anything, I just want to thank him for his work over the past few years. It's not easy on actors to play the same character for that amount of time!

It sounds painfully corny, but SG-1 has really had an impact on me in the four weeks since I first watched a friend's copy of the pilot.

I have been incredibly burned out on learning new things, and in even putting out any effort to find my niche, since struggling to complete my Bachelors degree in '96/'97. This was all for a variety of reasons, of course, but pulling out of it has felt nearly impossible for a long time.

Now, somehow, learning new stuff is interesting and fun again rather than being a burden. Time flies as I've buried my nose in books and hunted down references online, and I haven't felt that way in about a decade.

Some bits of Dr. Jackson's bounce-back-from-anything attitude seem to have inspired me to get off my butt and pursue what I've always wanted to learn and do, and I have been composing thank-yous to all of the appropriate people and companies responsible for SG-1... it's the least I can do.

I'm just hoping two things: most importantly, that my revitalized energy doesn't vanish on me again (it's only been a month, after all), and second, that I have the intestinal fortitude to wade through the bucketloads of estrogen that will probably be surrounding MS next weekend...
