5.04: The Fifth Man

have to disagree with H2. this ep was great. in my top 10 at least maybe top 5. It was a good action ep. we are getting to see danny in a more action role, him and his P.90 and that is good. I think its good that there is another threat to the SGC, like Kinsey, in Simmons. He is one mean guy. In my opinion he seems more 'evil' than Kinsey and maybe even maybourne.
i do agree that the goa'ulds are being killed of to easily. i for one would have liked certain goa'uld characters to have had their characters expanded but they are now dead so thats that.

spoilers (season five future ep)

Later on in season five there is a new goa'uld who is veryu powerful. His, or hers, mothership is so powerful not even a tollan ion cannon can harm it. interesting. :)

Can someone tell me what ep Heru'ur got the knife in the hand. Is it secrets cause if it is channel 4 have edited it out.

yes - Secrets is the ep where Jack throws a knife through Heru'ur's hand -- it's after the stuff in DC - he and Sam come through the gate and Jack has to face - off w/ Heru'ur --- great scene!!

and 'action' Daniel, tho it is a nice change, doesn't up this episode into the top of my list -- the storyline was boring -- the idea of the alien altering SG1's minds was interesting - but, like someone else mentioned (not sure whether it was here or on another list) -- why couldn't the alien affect the other Jaffa on the planet? he affected Teal'c -- big plot hole (i KNOW i read this somewhere - can't remember who said it tho) -- and the inclusion of Dr. Fraiser a little more was good too -- however - it doesn't make up for the lack of excitement -- there are so many other things they could have done w/ this ep ---

don't know if will help express my POV, but my fave ep of the entire series is "The Fifth Race" -- and my focus during that ep was more on RDA's acting ability than on some of the other things - i love the story line - it's interesting, but what RDA, and the others, had to do to make the ep work was amazing -- i didn't really feel as much of that in "The 5th Man" -- of course - these are my opinions --- and i'm entitled to them just as everyone else is entitled to theirs ------

What I really liked about this episode is ... well, for one thing, lots of Jack...but also that we get to see him as a soldier...and are reminded of the fact that he's a damn fine warrior, which doesn't come out much in the show anymore, IMHO. I always like it when they emphasize that Jack is one of the best Earth has to offer. But, of course, I'm biased :D

Liked a whole lot about this episode.

First off, though, one thing about Simmons. My dad is retired USAF Colonel, so I asked him. He said that only a retired officer would never wear a uniform except at a Veteran's Day event. So that helps support the theory he's retired.

I also asked him in what scenario would the Pentagon ask a retired officer to do some work for them. He said, "well, if they were evaluating a program".... pretty much exactly what Simmons is doing!

My thoughts on this one. Glad to see them back going to planets, finally. Yeah, Season 4 didn't have much of that.

There is a nice duality in this episode. There's the "Lt Tyler" mystery" and there's the "SGC vs. Simmons" conflict, and finally the fighting jaffa and saving Jack storyline.

It was really cool how our first shots of the SGC things don't look quite right: Sgt Davis is in that different jump suit, the angles PdL used were different from the standard ones... all subtle hints to make us wonder just who is wrong. Really liked that.

How about Daniel being the one to block the security cameras when Sam's hacking into the computers?

When Janet and Hammond are talking, and Hammond isn't looking at her, but looking at the silent gate, just hoping that Jack will appear through it. Very nice bit of acting (or directing).

I like Simmons a lot. He's more interesting that Maybourne, and he's smarter. I hope we see him again.

JSC, I thought the shoting of the Reol running did look exactly like that *thing* in Phantom Menace - i hated it so much I've blocked the name!

And I noticed, at least, being XX, the greater number of female extras at the SGC. 'Bout time!

My favorite lines were Jack's "Humor is my way of deflecting attention from my own obvious heroism". LOL! And "Know why the goa'uld want earth? Minnesota!"

I don't know if this has already been noted but.

I was watching the Fifth man yesterday and one thing made me think.

Something you don't normaly see in a TV series or film for that matter of fact.

Jack ran out of bullets on his P90.

It's just something you don't see that often.
Well I think anyway.

Or maybe I just need some Coffe or sleep

:rolly2:

5. 4 Fifth Man

I LOVED this.....

YEt another 'We Are So Great Look At Us Humantiy Ruulz' Eppy but still!

DO not like Q.....:D DO like Hammond arguing with him....

Think having Janet put in the position she was in was good... and also telling.....

What do the Goa'uld really want from us? Minnesota.

I can believe that, lving the English version *sigh*

Plent of action, Jack getting very dirty... lots of 'who is right what's up with my head' and more nasty operatives than you can shake a long stick at!

Overall? 8!

Yeah it treads old groundbut I'm a sucker for it:) Nothing new in it whatsoever except possibly this new species could bring some fun. I agree not the most grabbing or thought provoking but a jolly good little example of run of the mill:D

I thought the ep was great. Tyler looked a little too similar to Novar (?) from Rules of Engagement to me tho! But I definately prefer this series to the last; less deaths and shippyness, and exploring characters, which I think is great!

Yeah overall I liked this episode...like you guys say nothing really new in it...but it was good all the same.
Liked the parts with Hammond and Q....they were funny!
I also thought the alien was good in his real form:D
Were also some good lines in it...although none I can remember right now:(
Overall I will give it an 8 :D

Hmm, I don't know, I'm sort of mixed about the episode.
I've taped all of series 5 so far, but "5thMan" is probably the one I would re-watch the least.
It was a good story, but overall I don't think anything really good stood out, something I would remember. (except a dirty Jack and Daniel in the bandanna :naughty:)
It seemed a little weird that Hammond and others would automatically assume that SG1 were crazy/or had they're minds altered. Out of everything they experience, they still always jump to conclusions. (That's just me being whiny though! ;))
That Q guy, argh! He annoyed me in STTNG, although I quite liked him in Voyager, but he's doing a good role in Stargate because I can't stand him, his character is really creepy! :D

Still, it was nice that Sam keeped reminding people that Jack was still out there, and it was a nice little scene between her and Janet.

The ending though.... hmm.
I thought this episode was a Jack shoot'em up episode and he was doing a great job till the end when the jaffa soldiers captured them and SG1 suddenly turn up out the blue just in time.
I don't really like it when someone steps in at the last moment and saves the day.

However, I think SG1 was brought back to point out that they are a strong team. Carter said she'd be back and came through.

As Jack said "We don't leave our own behind" :)

Okay, I'll stop bitching now. It was an okay episode.

Interesting episode!

I kinda guessed what was going on, but it could have been an alternative reality, or a something playing with the minds of the people back at the base instead, and it was good the way they kept you hanging on.

John De Lancie's character (user 4574) -- the name was in the credits but I didn't video it: If he is a replacement for Harry Maybourne I would much rather have Harry instead.

Teal'c's Glider Gun -- now that's what I call a gun!!

Teal'c and that big gun made me go WAHEY..... seriously seeing him with that was second highlight to Jack being filthy LO!

OK, so it wasn't necessarily my kind of episode - I don't mind the shoot em up scenes but it was a bit same old same old EXCEPT, what the hell is our old mate Q up to. Loved the look on Sam's face when she realised he was user 4572 (?!? can't remember if thats the right number but you know what I mean) and then his face as he switched off the recorder ! hah - you're busted mate !

Of course I have to have a Teal'c comment and in this episode there were two - one verbal - to De Lancie's questioning of his loyalty to the SGC, something along the lines that it would be immediately apparently if he was an enemy as he would kill him where he sat ! - loved it

Also, the non verbal comment - the look on Teal'c's face when he had shot down the glider with the big honkin glider cannon/gun thing - very a la Arnie in Terminator 2 when he picks up the big gun in Sarah Connor's weapons stash - just kinda 'look at me and my big gun and what I can do with it!'

::shivers:: gotta go now - thinking naughty thoughts !

Teal'c and his big honkin weapon - yeah baby!

There was no indication of who those Jaffa were working for was there??

The umpa-umpa-la (Tyler) alien looked quite cool, hope we get to see more of them.

Just a thought, if it could take on any form, why not take on the form of a Jaffa to blend in, or a plant so they walk right past :D

I forgot about that. When it was injured and kept telling Jack to leave it behind, I was wondering "why doesn't it turn into a Jaffa and walk through the Gate?" I thought maybe it doesn't work on Jaffa because of the symbiont, but it worked on Teal'c. So the excuse I came up with was that he needed to be in close proximity to spread that dust/chemical onto people. That doesn't explain why he didn't use it at the end when the Jaffa were bearing down on him, but if he used it then Teal'c wouldn't have got to use his big honkin weapon.

only thing i thought of was that there were too many of em (look at the sheer numbers) and also that maybe it needed time.... plus those jaffa were aware and maybe had some stimulent or something to make them immune... cos the goa'uld had been trying to experiment.. or maybe they are immune after one infection???? wasn't explained well enough for my liking either

I liked this episode..... John DeLnacie is getting old though from his early days of Q....

I wondered why it did not change into a Jaffa and go through the gate as well....

I too was 50/50 on this episode.

I liked the character interaction's between all the characters, it was nice seeing Sam relying on Fraiser to "work it out".

We don't often see Jack try out his military expertise so this was kinda refreshing.

With regard to the Tyler / O'Neill conversations they worked quite well.

The concept of leaving the answers to later on was a great way of keeping attention but ....

It seemed that John De Lancie's character (user 4574) was thrown in to pad out the episode. It was great when Carter rumbled him. I agree that I prefer Maybourne, but I remember when he was first introduced nobody really liked him but it changed quite quickly into a "nobody really likes him but he can sometimes be Ok". This will probably happen with 4574 (as I'll call him).

In answer to the Goa'uld disguise by Tyler at the end, from his descriptions his race can use the defense mechanism if they choose to. As he was trying to get caught, to remove the Jaffa from the gate he probably didn't see it as necessary at that point to disguise himself. He would have needed to be in close proximity for it to work anyway and at my count there were about 14 Jaffa to work through. I agree that it should have been answered though, maybe the script writers wanted to get onto Teal'c "Big honkin weopon", and who would blame them.

With all this aquiring technology from other planets as being the primary objective, do you think we'll see that weopon again though - I doubt it.

Overall - 6/10 IMO.
