Good Report on Stargate Series

and i have NO idea why the scene was in there like that -- b/c all the eps were set up to only be the 42 1/2 minutes (it's listed as 45) so the shows would fit into a syndicated, regular cable channel timeslot w/ commercials (tho i think the eps still get chopped a little) --- but someone somewhere must have wanted that scene to be there -- so it was ---- and it's the only ep of SG-1 w/ the TV-MA rating --- really weird ----

Actually, it may have been what the FarScape people call a "Euro"

Due to US advertising, a syndicated show in the US has to fit the 42-43 minute length to get the commercials in. There's some long standing broadcast traditions that hasn't changed in a long time...

In Europe, and commercial free/less commercial cable the ep is longer. The extra scenes usually do not move the plot along (though they may be great character movers) and so they are left out of the US version. Also, in Europe I thought the nudity could be shown on broadcast TV. Or, at least at select times during the night.

This practice of trimming out "Euros" was a surprise to me. And so was shots of the cameras used on the show with both small TV screen and wide screen marks on the monitors. I find it a bit mind-boggling that they are really composing and shooting two versions of the show at the same time.

The nudity in that episode wasn't shown on British TV. Stargate is shown on Sky One, which is satellite or cable and the show is aired at 8pm before the 9pm watershed viewing times. So they took it out. Channel 4 who also aired the show and that episode left it out because it was shown at 5pm in the evening.

However, other European countries may have seen the uncut version on TV. Our censorship laws wouldn't permit full frontal nudity before 9pm.

actually -- advertising on tv in the US has changed, it was sometime in the mid 80's -- shows used to be very close to 45 mins - (for an hour long program) -- but the FCC allowed them to increase the advertising minutes per program, so now the hour long eps are only 42 mins -- really sucks too - that's why when networks like WGN and USA air eps of MacGyver that were orignally aired on ABC (bleck, p-tooey, hawkspit - don't get me started) -- the eps look choppy and have pieces missing - the networks had to cut things out to make them fit the *new advertising standards* -- stupid ad execs -- ya know - having MORE commercials isn't gonna make me wanna buy your crap - it just makes me more irritated that you interrupted my program to show me a bunch of crap that i wouldn't buy anyway even if i did have the money -- so what's the freakin' point?? stupid ads --

you wouldn't think that 3 minutes would be a big deal - but think of all the action/stuff (real technical i know) that goes into an hour-long program - a lot can happen in 3 mins on tv --

did you also know that George Bush (the 1st one) tried to limit the amount of commercial time during children's programming and was DENIED!! by the FCC?? how stupid is that - kids attention spans aren't the greatest anyway -- and adding more commercials ISN'T gonna make the kids sit in front of the tv longer - if they're as impatient as the rest of us - they'll get bored and go do something else ----

okay - i think i'm done ranting --- maybe i should try to take over the FCC and change all the regs?? 17 minutes of commercials for ever hour of television -- are they insane???? and the commericials aren't even different -- they're all the SAME!!

all right - so i lied -- NOW i'm done ranting ----

Thanks, I didn't know this. Hey, 17 sounds low to me. Ever watch a latenight show? I'm sure it's more than 17 mins. I forget the plot watching shows that late!!

GO HIGHLANDER II!!! The new and improved Dennis Miller :D

I agree with you 1000% I get so pissed :angryfire that the show is not even 45 min. long. By the end of the show I always feel that something vital was left out. and that, btw, is the ONLY time you'll see coming attractions from the next week's show. You see promos on Fox 5 TV (syndication) for X-Files and the Simpsons, all day and every day. But nothing for Stargate. Why is that? Is the show that expen$ive to make that there's nothing left over for promotions? :angryfire

<takes bow> thank you ----

even if the show is expensive to make - Fox isn't makin' it - Showtime/MGM is -- so Fox should be able to promote it -- and MGM has plenty o' money - they can do it too ----

Fox 5 --are you in the DC area?? eep ---

maybe i should become exec in charge of programming over at Fox -- then we'd have good stuff to watch - not the garbage they air now -- (Fox needs to get back into the swing of things and air good stuff) --- how many times can you watch the same eps of the same shows?? (depending on the show of course) --

maybe i'll start my own network (anyone have any money?) and air only the good stuff -- MacGyver - uncut, of course, Highlander, Stargate, Law & Order, The Pretender, JAG --- etc etc etc --- only the really good stuff -- the stuff people REALLY wanna watch - not the crap the networks shove down the throats of the viewers -- what is w/ all this reality TV? reality my @$$!! <stepping off soapbox - again>

have fun!!!

All my favorite shows!

So who's paying Fox to air the show? MGM? Maybe they're not paying enuf. Someone's dropped the ball somewhere! Go and apply for the position at Fox. If they don't give it to you out of gratitude, I'll be proud to watch your six as we storm the barricades! :blah:

As to how many times we can watch the same eps of the same shows, well Fox seems to think we can watch the same 10 shows of The Simpsons over and over again, twice/day. Even the X-Files repeats @ midnite on Sat and Sun.

If you start your own network, it'll have to be a cable network. How about a reality TV show that kills off all the reality TV shows. "And then there were none."

I don't have an extra dinero lying around, but as I said, I'll be proud to watch you six! Siempre Fi! or something like that ;)
