Pairings

The never ending story line...

Probably the main reason I *don't* write long pieces... mostly snippets, tags or missing scenes. The 'I wonder what if' things.

I remember hearing once in an English Lit class [believe me, I don't think I was ever awake for one] that thee are really only 24 basic story ideas and every story is crafted out of one of several of them.

That's what makes writing so challenging for me. Trying to figure out a new way to present an old idea.

I can't actually see why anyone would find Rowan's avatar offensive in any shape or form.... I think it's a rather nice picture of those two. In fact, I never even thought about the 'slash' connotation that could be put on it until it was mentioned! That must make me either (a) very dim or (b) very clean minded. Considering half of the comments I make on some of the threads which have double meanings squelching out of their sides, I would probably plump for (a)!!

Just don't all agree with me at once!

As for the trails of 'droll' by which I imagine you mean 'drool'... Well you know, it takes all sorts to make a world, and I find those threads give me a much needed laugh sometimes, because the perpetrators are quite delightfully unashamed in their drooling and most of it is done in the name of 'fun' - a concept that a lot of people don't appear to recognise in this hectic, fast paced world of ours. They can also take a lot of leg-pulling in very good heart, not to mention give as good as they get.

I would guess that most of the pairing up of the characters is also done in the name of 'fun', as is the shippiness, I certainly make naughty comments on threads about my favourite character in a very lighthearted way and I make no apologies for my double meanings and innuendoes when I do so! I certainly don't take it seriously. LOL..... They seem to make people laugh and what would life be without laughter and fun?

So while we're 'not pairing' everyone up...... I seem to remember reading one fic which had Janet and Jacob paired up.... a rather fascinating combination to my mind. Not that I'd be particularly interested to see it written as part of a script though!!

Part of my livelihood comes from writing, and when I read the fanfics I realise that a lot of them have the same story because they're all coming from the same consensus. It's all from the POV of what the fan fic writer thinks goes on in the SGC or among the team. There is not much of an attempt to flesh out or make the Goa'uld, for instance, more two dimensional or even give them any other interaction with others than aggression, violence and cruelty. But if the Goa'uld were a reality, they would, in fact, interact with each other, probably laugh at Goa'uld 'in jokes', eat, drink, procreate with each other, just like other species do. They wouldn't just be hanging about in motherships existing only to make the inhabitants of a planet bow down before them. They must do SOMETHING else on their day off! But I haven't seen much evidence that any of the fanfic writers even view them in this way.

There are a couple of writers who have branched out and written from the POV of another team in the SGC. But essentially they are all going to be the same and they're all going to be the 'ideal' as far as the writer is concerned. As Rowan so rightly said, the challenge presenting an old idea in a brand new way. It's also important to keep the interest of the reader, grab them by the throat at the beginning and keep the interest through to the end so that they can't put the story down.

Oh well, off my soapbox..... this IS about pairings after all.

 ;) :D

exactly! i think i've heard that too -- the 'only 24 story ideas' thing --

what i generally write are the 'what if' type things too - i've written some longer stories -- i even have a pseudo-mini-novel type piece i'm revamping -- but, it's the basic type crime-drama storyline --- just, hopefully, a bit differently --

the story i just finished was a Profiler piece that is an interaction btwn Bailey Malone and Chloe Waters - from Bailey's POV (but done in 3rd person) -- (and, i made Chloe 17 so the story would work) -- it's currently still in the beta process, but i think it turned out fairly well --

i like the 'subtle' interactions btwn ppl --

the current piece i'm working on is a JAG story that started out to be only a phone conversation btwn Harm and Josh Pendry - inspired by a 2 minute scene at the end of one episode -- and the thing has turned into 25 pages ---

i had a story challenge i submitted that was a page and a half snippet piece to 'alter a piece of L&O canon' btwn Claire and Jack - short and sweet - no sex, no lovey-dovey talk - nothing - just them --

i do, however, seem to have problems getting my Stargate fics off the ground - or 'through the wormhole' as it were - can't really figure out why --- must be and RDA thing - b/c i can't get MacGyver to work either -- any ideas????

well- back to work -------- (they like us to do that here ;) )

Since I've met the ascifi list I haven't had this problem. Yep. For all that I later see my ideas as stupid, I ask a new 'what if' just about every other week. My trouble is I'm turning everything into an angst fest and Molly whump. I've got short story ideas and never ending story ideas. My WIP "Mission Six" just keeps going!

H2, I wish I remembered enough of MacG to give you help. Reading sites with one line plot summaries leaves me with one impression: they were outrageous plots!

it's okay -- my 2 lonely MacGyver fics are hanging around the same place as all my other WIPs - one of several notebooks full of handwritten pages and computer printouts -- one day i might get around to writing them again -- but something about MacGyver is just hard --- i think it's the science and the 'macgyverisms' --- science was NOT my best subject in school -- i'm better in the english/poli sci/history areas ---

oh well -- guess my little JAG story will have to do for now --

See. I'm baffled by law. I got all tangled up in a traffic case and it ended up the reckless truck driver was let off because I couldn't convince the judge I'd seen an actual DOT number on the truck because I'd turned my notes over to the cops that morning and never expected to need them again! The police report had the number I saw in my binocs right on it!!

If you can write Jag and L&O run with it, baby! You have the power!

I was an earth sciences fan in school. So, I can relate to Sam getting all happy about holograms, blackholes and particle radiation.

sounds like someone goofed that case - if the number was in the police report -- but - each judge is different and makes the decision the way he/she sees fit --

oh - and L&O and JAG - i don't do a lot of case/investigation/courtroom fic --- that's REALLY complicated -- not to mention i know NOTHING of NY law -- and Case Law in general is a bitch to look up --- unless you have access to WestLaw and such -- which you have to be like a law student or lawyer to have ----

oh - and military law? uh uh -- i'm lucky if i can keep ranks straight - (which i'm getting better at) -- i wouldn't even know where to begin....

so -- i do 'missing scene' - and 'what if' situations - the more subtle personal interactions (think i said that b4 - but i've been in so many threads today, can't remember where i've said what and when)

traffic court, Chicago style

the names are withheld to protect the innocent!

LOL! that dumb case went on for three and a half months with the guy hoping I'd not come back. He got stopped because I called 311 and reported a truck cab hitting parked cars at 1AM. I didn't even own a car at the time and was so burned that some idiot was smacking cars with a truck cab and then sitting in a lot for an hour afterward. The driver was booked in some way for DUI after my call. I even saw the cops trailing him in one his multiple passes down the street! But the charge didn't stick and the judge dismissed it because of the numbers question that I couldn't answer made the truck cab a personal veichle instead of someting under the company name licence and the CCD lincence that was on the side. And we'er talking a full size 18 wheeler truck cab trying to spin down side streets to pick up hookers in Chicago at 1AM. The man was NOT in his right mind.

The guy misses the first court date because it's rumored he's driving trucks in Indiana. "How on a suspended licence?" asks the judge that day. Fined him some many thousands of dollars that day... Second time I think the guy was in the court room and wanted to see if I'd show. Third time we go down to a judge in another section for the full hearing. I can't help think it's all wrapped up in the licence for bribes thing going on just before then. The man looked way too illterate to be driving a fifty-odd-foot-long truck everyday.

The cool thing about the experience was that the two officers were cool about it all and showed up for every date. I'd never heard of such a thing. They wanted that driver to go down for hitting those cars and then trying to evade the DUI. They were sort of hurt by the ruling because they felt that they had so done their duty and their job. I sure didn't think that there were decent cops in Chicago, but I guess it's fine that they're on the street nights in Buena Park ;) They are quite a nice pair.

out of all the stuff i've written(about 80 or so), two have been a/u, not horribly au but a definte branch from canon. and there have been 2 pieces of smut, sam/teal'c if for no other reason than noone else is writing it and i refuse to write sam/jack or sam/danny...and one really dark slash eluded to death fic piece...and all the others have been lining up with canon. that's my personal standard. i want stuff i write to be of the kind that could slip into the show adn not totally contradict it.
i've written one page ficlets all the way up to novel length original stories...

to me the highest praise i can ever get from folks is that they 'heard' the characters or that 'it read like an episode'

when i hear that i know i wrote something good (at least as i consider good)

and rowan, i had a avatar of jack & teal'c from the curse...the only way i'd consider it slash would be if the pic was of the two guys sucking face.

i've read slash but...frankly i just don't see it. jack is such a hetero character to me that i just can't see him reaacting to danny that way.
danny, sure i could see him, same with teal'c. but danny & jack....i always read them with a definite dose of tongue in cheek...and the imagination of slash and some ship writers...oh my they certainly do get creative

just my .02:blush:

I guess thats a no to character pairing then.....hey i just had an idea (yes i know it's rare)

you could have two male characters pairing off....no forget that. it's a sick sick! SICK!!! idea.

Yikes!!!!! i wonder where that came from?

Jessa:blpaw:

Chicago Traffic Court

Cyn -- was that judge on crack??

the guy doesn't show for court - then the two cops tell him what they saw - and you say what you saw -- even if the numbers weren't exact --- ugh -- and they let him off? hmmmmmmmmm someone forgot to read the IL State law book that morning i believe -----

That judge was a :clown: . The simple fact that the police showed up everyday in court should have sent that drunk to jail! They almost NEVER do that.

the judge

The case got booted to a different judge.

according to the lawyers he was a 'by the book sort of guy' something wasn't by the book. The guy working the state's side had only me. I don't know if any of the three car owners ever pressed damages. It ranged from a beat up backend and another's front end. A taxi got squeezed. I know I'd hate $500 worth of body work on a car, and maybe the insurance came through or they never even knew about the events that morning when their car's got smacked.

Afterward, the officers' language got a bit scortched in the hallway. a bit blue? Is that an expression for that sort of thing?

I'm still trying to convince myself I did a good job telling what I saw. The judge got a bit peeved at me for being soft spoken and not able to be heard over the A/C fan. I was just so intimidated by the whole thing of having to appear in court. So I guess I'm sort of put off by the whole thing and at least I wasn't in the hot seat in traffic court this time and this experience might help when I am.

Just like in any good SG-1 episode, it wasn't just one thing-- it was a rapid downturn of a multiple of bad choices and events.

i agree with annie and co. a pairing would really mess up the plot, and turn it into a soap with no basis at all on the air force.

but sam and jack do look good together, and a little hint like window of opportunity, beneath the surface or divide and conquer is quite sweet...

okay, so I'm new at this place <looks around fearfully> But...

I am totally for any kind of pairings, under two conditions.

1 - They CAN NOT make the show revolve around it, it CAN NOT ruin the show, the team dynamic or result in anyone LEAVING "for personal reasons".

2 - They have to make it realistic. In soaps (and in some of the worse fics) the characters will have known each other for months, or even years, and then outta the blue, fall in love. No dating, no life-changing experince forcing them to bond, no nothing. Just an unsolicited declaration of undying love - until the next guy, at any rate. I mean, YUK!

Anyway, SG-1 dosn't need pairings to make it intersting. They all have such a great bond with each other, and with Hammond and Janet. Exploration of those relationships will fill up enough of the non-action time that *has* to happen, (cause else they will crash and burn) for at least as long as they can come up with bad guys for them to fight.

Well, that was my 2.25 cents (incl GST)

First off...Hey Unicorns and a warm welcome to our little corner of the web...hope you have loads of fun here (as we all do):rolly2:

Could not agree with you more.....I really don't think that the show needs pairing to make it interesting...its fine as it is:D

Welcome to the SG web and my particular soapbox, Unicorns.

I'll say it once more, witness Farscape! Aeryn and what's-his-name have declared their love for each another loudly and repeatedly. Whenever the camera comes back to them, they grab or kiss each other. While Farscape is still a good show w/good plot and storyline, the other actors have become background noises to "The Affair".

Watch. Its "I Love You, Aeryn" and "I Love You, Whats-Your-Name" several times per episode. :disgust: enuf already!

Oh, so *you're* the one hijacking the shipments of the Region 1 FS DVDs that were supposed to be released June 14th? ARRRGGG!

i agree with you unicorn. its stargate not as the stargate turns.
and i don't mind the ship IN the show, just not AS the show.

personally i think season 5 has a perfect mix for me....
