5.09: Between Two Fires

the episode starts out with everyone on tollana at omoc's funeral.
they say nice words, light an eternal flame...all that funeral jazz
at the end travelle tells jack that all he's done for tollana in the past hasn't been forgotten and if he'd like to come back tomorrow they have something to talk about.
as they're getting escorted back to the gate (you know i dont' think we actually SEE the gate once...huh?) anyway, narim slips something to sam.
oh wait yes we do..they come back to earth, sam tells the guys to hold up, she turns on the little thing and it's a hologram of narim telling htem he thinks earth is in great dangee...
cue open

now we're in the breifing room, sure they're suspicious but it can't hurt to hear travelle's offer so back to tollana they go.
travelle is willing to trade earth one ion canon for an unspecified amount of trinium. wow, too good to be true huh?
meanwhile sam & teal'c talk to narim who can't believe they're trading weapons with the primitive..ooh excuse me, less advanced races.

back to earth.
big surprise, hammy's all for it, but sam points out that one ion cannon isn't beans for earth, can't cover that much of the planet and would tick off the russians...they'd need at least 38 to fully cover teh planet...soooo back to tollana

this time jack & danny approach travelle about 38 cannons while sam & t-man go to narims house to talk to him. seems narim has been watching the x-files cause he seems to think omoc was murdered. omoc was 100% a 'don't share' kinda guy, and now that he's gone the curia is willing to share...suspicious huh?
(cute side note, narim has somehow gotten sam's voice as the computer voice of his house...awweee how sweet???0

ok, the guys show up and ...wow travelle has agreed to 38 cannons...now even jack's suspicious. they get narim to get them into travelle's office, if there's a conspiracy she's in on it. danny and sam go with him while jack & teal'c go snooping around.

narim discovers that a few weeks ago a goauld ship entered orbit...and left. what? they never do that...so they dig further. seems the ships shields were impervious to the ion cannons....oops, their big bad space guns are shooting blanks now....

and of course sam danny and narim get busted..by...tanith aka (the king, you see his costume you'll know what i mean...boy's got a serious elvis thing going)
your normal blustering and we learn that tanith is working for a goauld whose name cannot be known by the little folks...so who is this bad @$$...who knows

....danny & sam provide a diversion so narim can dash through the walls and escape....ouch.

now of course we have jack & teal'c running around, a goauld who's about to get his hands on phase shifting bombs...which can neatly slip right through an iris thank you very much.
just another bad day on planet tollana.

narim agrees to help the guys, he blows up the weapons, one of which tanith had jsut ordered travelle to ship through the gate to earth...now ofcourse tanith is ticked off and taking it out on planet tollana....sg-1 beats it outta town...leaving narim and the rest of the tollans...

back on earth, everyone pretty much agrees tollana is toast, they get a transmissin from narim, the ships are blasting tollana from orbit, the gate is destroyed adn everything that tries to leave the planet gets blown up...and the transmisison ends with the true fate of tollana looking grim...

next week, the sgc run into the aschen and yes everybody's favorite joe is back...

Murder! they wrote...

Well, looks like I am back being a minority within the minority again. This episode was good, but I was not thrilled as others have been judging from comments I have read here and there.

Did like Tanith's reappearance, sure he'll not be gone long, liked Teal'c stylin' outfit in opening and nice shot of Jack and Daniel talking whilst leaning against the whatever it was (but what was Daniel doing that made him shake? Fidgeting I guess). And as always, great SFX.

Nareem/Narim is a little gone on Sam, isn't he? Kind of a puppy love. It'll be interesting to see what happened to him.

Must add- Priceless: Teal'c and Jack holding hands.

Well its a minority that contains two of us Orange. Personally, although the episode had some merit, it certainly wasn't a wonderful, exciting, enthralling or 'spiffing' episode. Not to the extent that many seemed to feel it was, however that is their perogative.

I thought it once again showed SG1 in a holier than thou light, and little Saintly Sam and her comment to Travell that she DID have a choice made me want to crawl into the computer screen and slap her senseless. I wonder what wimpy, saintly Sam would have done had she been in Travell's rather invidious position. Not to mention the inference that Travell should have given a sh**t about any other planet. After all, would our SG1 heroes or the government they work for care one iota about the survival of any other planet if earth was on the line?

I think not somehow...... In fact I KNOW not.

This holier than thou attitude, we are selfless heroes constantly engendered by the writers of this series should really stop, but of course it won't because nearly everyone else in rabid fandom thinks that almost everything that has our heroes in it is wonderful. And they can almost do no wrong.

The only reason I have omitted commenting on the last couple of episodes is because I have grown tired of trying to put any controversial points forward in amongst the mass fan hysteria and drooling over whatever comes out of Burnaby Studios.

Sometimes the nicest part of beating your head against a brick wall is when you stop doing it. It hasn't changed my contention that this show has lost the promise it had at the beginning and all of the speculation over who this big bad Goa'uld is will probably fizzle out like a damp squib, just like all of the potentially good enemies have. And even if he/she IS bigger and badder, he/she will STILL fall over dead whe SG1 breathe on him/her.

So my opinion and feelings are extremely jaded........

I imagine that there will be a rash of defenders and some questions as to why I still watch from those who would defend the show and everything it does whether it sucks or not. And the truth is, I like the idea of the universe the concept created. I love the thought of a horrific almost supernatural menacing enemy out there and poor little earth struggling to get around and explore whilsts trying not to annoy until they had the technology to fight on a level playing field. I keep watching because I have the vain and foolish hope that something might happen in an episode to make me retract my misgivings. So far, not much has, but I live in hope!

:(

Pros&Cons

Watched it again and...

It's good entertainment, I am not arguing that but...I've read from some that it was the "best eppy of the season" and I'm over here scratching my head wondering what I am missing. What I know to be true for me personally is that I see so much under-reacting from the characters, e.g., when Tannith is on the screen telling Travell to test the bomb by tossing it through the Tauri stargate, Sam and Daniel sit there like, well, it doesn't scare them too much. Hey that's HOME we're talking about! Such control I could never muster.

Or how about when Nareem tells Jack there's a Goa'uld in their midst-I mean, Jack I would think might jump at that-upset-but it's a couple of sentences later he asks about it.

And the Tollan-never got into them-they are the epitome of detachment.

There's the two cents. Love live Sg1. It's enjoyable. Still love Fifth Man the best.

Fantastic 10/10

This ep rocked!! My favourite of the season. They have really done a great job with this season so far. It was soooooooo good. It had heaps of everything. Humour, Angst, Goa'ulds, Action, Explosions and a lil bit of romance

A great performance from Garwin Sanford (Narim). What a fine actor he is. He really plays Narim so well. :star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

I really liked the directing in this ep. William Gerehtey did a fantastic job.

The Daniel/Jack scenes were great. Everyone seemed to be involved and have an equal amount of lines and scenes which was great. Teal'c and Jack's holding hands scene was hilarious.

It was funny how Nareen had Sam's voice as his computer:
"Is that my voice?"
"Uhh....yes, I was hoping you wouldn't notice" :laugh2: :laugh2:

Great to see Tanith again. I wonder which Goa'uld he is working for. Could it be this 'Baltimore' guy that they have planned for Summit?

Loved Teal'c's reaction to hearing Tanith was about:
"Easy big fella" :laugh2:

The poor Tollan's. I feel sorry for them. I agree with Anni when she said that she didn't think that they were selling out Earth. If you see Travell's reaction to sending the bomb thingy through the gate to the Tau'ri, she seemed shocked and really didn't want to do it.

Oh, and one last thing. Didn't Teal'c look fine in those clothes he wore to Omoc's funeral? (woof-whistle)

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I'm betting that Tanith's 'master with no name' is none other than Osiris. She's 'been out of the loop' for a while and she may be doing what 'snakes' do best! What do you think? At the end of The Curse she seemed a little confused as to why there weren't any worshipers at her temple and that Daniel was challenging her. Maybe when she went back to space she met came upon Tanith, he brought her up to date with the Tau'ri... Sounds like a good fan fic! I dunno. Who else would know of Earth's iris at the stargate and would go to such lengths to strike at them?

Well rest assured all of you..... Osiris or not..... whoever this 'big bad' is, SG1 will probably take them out in the beginning of Season six armed only with a lump of wood with a nail in the end...... no problem!

 :( :angryfire :crying: :disgust: :disturbed
WHIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEE I miss the first 5 minutes of SG1, what SUIT????????????

ooh hon, he was in this brown suit with a cream turtle neck under it, over coat....soooo buff....you missed some major droolage

Oh for heaven's sake......!!!! You guys never cease to amaze me!!!

Coffecup you didn't really miss anything at all. It looked like a suitable dark funerally sort of suit with a round neck shirt or something underneath. I didn't even notice until someone wittered on about it so I went back to look. He had a dark raincoat over the whole ensemble. Very sort of 'resident hit man' attire.....

All he needed was a little trilby hat to make it complete, but then the Tollans know that he's a Jaffa so he didn't need one to hide the tattoo on the forehead.

There there......

However Teal'c was engagingly cute throughout the whole episode I will see. I thought the hand holding thing was one of the nicer touches to the whole episode.

;)

Happy now?

  ;)

(sniffing loudly) yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh, a little, Anni :crying:
sky, a brown suit/cream turtleneck?

poor coffeecup, you want me to make you a copy of the tape so you can drool for yourself?

I thought this ep was okay. good, but not terriffic.
what i don't understand is why Earth was brought into this at all? Okay, so they got invited to the funeral; obviously omac was hard up for friends. But why offer sg-1 weapons? why involove them at all? if it was a muted cry for assistance, if the Tollan wanted to be caught, it didn't come across very clear. Why ask us for trinium? surely there are other means, other planets, from which the tollan could obtain the needed mineral. why risk letting sg-1, a proven pot stirrer, interfere with the goa'uld/Tollan agreement? seems stupid to me. not to mention suspicious.
okay, done griping. i did like the way they tied the eps throughout the show, though.

YES! I was right! I've only seen the preview and I wasn't sure if that was Tanith or Narim (I'm in Australia, so I can only get previews from sg1archive.com, and they're a bit blurry.)I picked Tanith 'cause he's such a scumbag that it'd HAVE to be him. And I got it!
Now all I need is Apophis back and I'll be set...

Well by the looks of some major plot spoilers posted on Sci Fi Guide you're going to be disappointed about Apophis....

He's not listed as a major player among the Goa'uld..... It seems to be that the 'big Bad himself who both Tanith AND Osiris are allied with is none other than Anubis..... Of course, who knows where these rumours are from really and whether they are accurate, but I have put spoiler space in to be on the safe side.

Hopefully, this guy will be more than a match for SG1.... and that he wants to unite the System Lords from within..... if he does then SG1 may have to use a lot more than a big lump of wood with a nail in the end to get rid of him!

 ;)

Anubis?
He better be big and bad and last longer than 40 minutes.
Anubis is one of my favs from actual egyptian mythology (I think it was because the jackel mask was on of the coolest).

i just love the fact that, if it's true, part of my dark side ***** is going to come true.....

question

I have only one question and that is...

Why did the episode start out with the voice over saying "previously on Sg1"

to my knowlege there was no mention of this on the previous episode and it started off as if it was a continuation of the previous episode.

Adam

Maybe this wasn't the best episode so far, but it is the first one to push the Mythology forward this season. Frankly, I thought that they had run out of ideas since killing off Apophis, but bringing back Tanith and a new unknown baddie is great.

BTW I skipped over the spoilers about who the baddie is, as I don't want to know.

And some good humour:

NARIN: His name is Tanith.
JACK to TEAL'C: Easy big fella!

and more "Big Honkin' Spaceguns" -- I said the words before Jack said them.

Though they could be in danger of overdoing all the "Big Honkin" and "For Crying out Loud" and "Happy Campers". Do it too much and it's not funny any more!
