Which of the series first made you a Star Trek fan?

I watched TOS and TNG religiously. DS9, less so, especially once things started to get all mystical. Voyager, tried to but couldn't, and Enterprise, didn't even bother.

I think the problem, as with any series, is that after a while you start to recognize recycled plots and themes.

I bought a VCR just because TNG started in '87. Top loading monaural with remote control on a wire. But I could fast scan through commercials after the recording. I didn't watch off the air.

But I was an SF fan before TOS. DS9 is the closest thing to 'real' science fiction. Roddenberry's utopianism is fundamentally lame.

TNG probably is the series that made me a fan but I'm more than partial to the majority of series. Even maybe half an episode here and there of enterprise.

As for Roddenberry's Utopianism being lame I have to strongly disagree. At times we need those visions in entertainment. It may not have been suitable for a long run and it's great that Star Trek evolved and changed and continued to provide inspiration in new ways to new people and generations but Star Trek itself did inspire many because of this utopian view.

In terms of reality, any child from anywhere, be it Syria(if safe to do so) the US or China can go outside at night and at the right time see a spacecraft built by multiple countries, many of which have been at war with one another in some form in recent history, they may even currently have poor political relations. On board that space craft there are humans from multiple nations working together, conducting experiments, and looking down on our small world without seeing borders.

It may not be much but there is a small piece of utopia up there and I do know for a fact that many of those that helped make it happen were inspired by Roddenberry's Utopian view.

Personally I'd like to see someone come up with an exciting way to present a Utopian future that is also entertainingg but I doubt that will be the Case with Star Trek Discovery.

TOS was all there was when I was growing up, but it was enough for me to develop a lifelong appreciation of the overall concept.

Initially TNG, but on rewatching the show quite recently, I realise I don't have quite the same love for it as I did back in the early 90s.

Some of the characters were very inspiring, not least "Q", and likewise some of the story-arcs were exceptional. But looking back, I just can't motivate myself to watch the first two seasons, and last two seasons. Three, Four and Five were my favourites, but the show as a whole fell way short of the sum of its parts.

Didn't like DS9 to begin with, but now I rank it above TNG. Perhaps because it feels more "grounded". Can't explain it really.

Voyager & Enterprise, barely caused a ripple on my Interest Radar.

However, TOS still remains my favourite. Yes, it temporarily got knocked off of its perch when TNG came along, but in retrospect TOS had everything and nothing. Best SF show ever, despite it's relatively short run.

I was raised on TNG and love absolutely everything about it. I could be having the worst day in the world and watching an episode of TNG is like wrapping myself in a security blanket. Feels like being home every time I watch it. Nerdy I know :) Voyager is my second favorite cuz Janeway is the bomb, TOS almost ties with Voyager for me, then the animated series, then Enterprise, then... I suppose... DS9 :devilish:

I came into Star Trek age at the perfect time I feel, TNG, DS9, and VOY were all being aired on TV at the same time, so you could catch Star Trek a couple night of the week. TNG and DS9 overlaped one year, but for TNG it was mostly reruns, DS9 and VOY had a couple years of overlap. DS9 was always my favorite though, not so much for the mystical religious components, but the ongoing war with the dominion, and the political shuffling of allies and enemies during this war time, plus the Ferengi were always fun, and I thought the switch to the space station was cool. I know some poeple werent as big of fans of not moving around, but you never knew what may come through that wormhole. TNG and VOY were both entertaining as well, especially any episode featuring the Borg, they did such a good job, slowly introducing the Borg that for the longest time they were this scary, yet unknown presence out there in the dark. My biggest criticism with VOY was they made the Borg to run of the mill, once they got to the point where they could board a Borg cube, safely for the most part, it took the ominous factor away from them.

I started to sour on Star Trek a bit when Babylon 5 came along. With the exception of DS9, B5 with it's story telling and characterization made Trek seem old hat by comparison.

I agree, they ruined the Borg.

I watched TOS the first time it was shown in the UK. An alien in the crew was the big draw for me.
