A man with a heart as big as his career
This is my brother's story, as told by me… Our school was taking a
yearly skiing trip to one of the local ski hills in Southern
Alberta, Canada. The day went like usual with lots of skiing and
just having a jolly good time. My brother was approaching the ski
lift, just to find all his friends going on without him, as a joke.
He was upset not to have anyone to go up the lift with, let alone
ski down with.
As he was approaching the ski lift chair, a gentleman asked if it
was ok to catch a lift with him. Still hurt by his friends actions,
my brother obliged. Riding the lift up the mountain, the gentleman
could tell that my brother was disturbed by his friends' behavior
and spent some time telling him that stuff like that happens.
During the brief ride, not once did my brother ever look the
gentleman in the face until he asked my brother his name. My bother
finally looked up at the man, who was offering his hand in
friendship, and he nearly fell off the lift. "Oh my..oh my..you're
McGuiver!!!!" my brother stuttered. The man just grinned and
said, "Well yes, my name is Richard Dean Anderson." My brother was
in total awe. He never once missed an episode of the show.
Finding themselves at the top of the lift, Mr. Anderson thanked my
brother for sharing his lift with him and reassured him that all
kids eventually grow up and won't be so mean. My brother mentioned
that no one was going to believe this, that he had actually rode the
lift with him. Anderson said they might see each other around later
at the lodge.
Well later came sooner than expected. My brother was in the lodge,
relaying his encounter to many disbelieving friends. He tried over
and over to convince them that he was telling the truth. Like
perfect McGuiver timing, Anderson, seeing my brother, approached him
with a grin on his face.
"Hey Shane," he said. "I just wanted to thank you again for the ride
on your lift chair. Hope you have a great weekend, and see ya around
buddy."
All those disbelieving faces dropped and an ear-to-ear grin broke
out on my brother's face. He has never and never will forget the
touch with fame he had that day. This just shows that no matter how
big someone may get in stardom, there is always time to put a smile
on a child's face.
Thank you, Richard Dean Anderson, for putting a smile on my
brother's face.
If this story is true... truly is one man with a heart of gold.
