Oh I know the mangas 4 books large.I wanted to get it but it would have costed me a fortune(about 100$ without taxes) But I've seen Akira,(the old first version that was put out without the special stuff and with the BETTER voice actors)and it was 2h+ long but not two tapes

its £15 each here so thats £60 for the whole thing...

1 dollar is about the same as a euro, and about 60 pence. The best place for all anime stuff is ebay.co.uk. The VHS is about £2.50

It is probably the most hyped film in all of anime because really, people show this to their friends as an example of anime. It is the original, the spear head, the clasic of anime!

In my opinion it deserves every bit of that hype. Fantastic!

I have never met anyone who does actually own an anime video or DVD, that doesn't have Akira. I can find fellow anime fans by wearing an Akira T-Shirt I have, cos I know that all anime fans will have seen it (It worked aswell :) )

Nothing is free in anime. Most of us were brought up on American film, live action with actors and so on. When watching Akira, you have to take into acount that it is exactly as they wanted. Someone's hair moves a little in the wind, they wanted that to happen! The point is, this is the original crafted art, the founder of what we came to know and love as anime.

What I love is the music, the flow, the speed, the quality and the action itself. The story facinated me aswell, like highlander, it is something that is just so spectacular that no matter how bad the film is, you enjoy it. Although in this case (and Highlander), even if it was about mushrooms growing or a day in the life of a beach pebble, it would be animated so well, and have that air of quality that you would still watch it.

not everyone has seen akira though....there are some hardcore anime fans who havent seen it,whether no intrest or other hardcore anime fans telling them to stay away from it. Its got some technical issues,(dont worry, god,I LOVE this movie,I'm even starting to get the manga from it) and alot of hardcore fans actually...well...despise it o_O its odd.

Atleast they've watched it. I object when people don't watch a film for no reason.

yeah,so do I.Especially hate when they pass judgement on it without watching it XD Ah well....I do mighty well love that movie though...I even love the older dub.Im not so fond of the Pioneer dub, even if its closer to whats actually being said.I found the voice acting in that one to be really flat.

Live Akira Developing
I've read all your posts here and no one actually says what makes it so good. The storyline, the animation -- but why?

The animation is probably what sets Akira apart as such a groundbreaking movie. The story is excellent, too, and not really too hard to follow. In a (good-sized) nutshell:

In a city in almost constant turmoil, the military leaders are trying to understand and recreate the psychic explosion that destroyed the inner city years ago, caused by the mysterious child Akira. A chance meeting between another experimental psychic subject and a biker touches off similar psychic abilities in the biker, and it's up to the military, the other experimental subjects, a bunch of freedom fighter/terrorists, and his friends, to stop him from losing control and destroying everything again.

It's a very human story, with clear and believable characters, a bit of humor, a bit of violence, a bit of politics, a lot of cool tech, and an incredible musical score. Altogether, it just makes an incredible thrill-ride of a movie.

If you can, watch it in a dark room, with the stereo volume up.

Great film , now if only someone could explain the ending. :)

My friend insisted on showing it to me years ago. For whatever reason, I just couldn't get into it.
