Hi,

Just to confirm that BOBW 12 STARGATE SG-1 convention is still on track, with our headline guest as MICHAEL SHANKS.

It should make for an interesting convention, as it was announced on the weekend that Michael is leaving the show after season 5, and so this will be his first public appearance after this announcement was made public.

For more details see website: www.bobw.com.au

And there are still plenty of good seats available for the weekend and parties. However the Friday night 'meet & greet' Cocktail Party is now sold out.

All convention events will be held at The Gazebo Hotel, 2 Elizabeth Bay Road, Rushcutters Bay SYDNEY. Room rates start at $85.00 AUS a night for a standard room (1-2 people), and this includes breakfast.

Regards,

Arthur

Michael Shanks leaving?

I am concerned?! I do not know about Michael Shanks leaving Stargate after the Fifth season? I have hunted the net for information about this, but have not found anything..?

Could some PLEASE tell me what is going on?! Is Danny leaving?!

A very stressed out
Chelle :errrr:

oops

Well well its amazing who you run into on the net <snicker>
How ya doin Arther <BG>

As for the reports on Michael leaving if you check the stargate section Chellie there is a post discussing that very thing.

Well I think it really SUX that MS is going to the con in Aussie land, and he couldn't even drive across town to attend gatecon in Vancouver. Whatsup with that anyway ? Somebody down under ask him why eh.:(

It's rumored he likes to travel and he's desided that if he's going to appear somewhere it's going to be at some place exotic and remote from his home.

"someplace exotic and remote from his home"?!?!?!?!?
Is he kidding or what???

Did he actually talk to Amanda and Chris and everyone else from this year and last about how great Gatecon is?
One wonders about his reasons....

I can't see him flying 10,000 miles to a con down under when he's leaving the show anyway. I don't even think he's that crazy about his fans. It's a mystery. Maybe he's never seen a kangaroo up close. :rolly2: :D  :kisses: :p

What is so wrong about him coming to Oz??

Besides, he's going to the con in London. The guy obviously likes to travel.

Anyhow, Gatecon got so many other great people, including production staff - people we can never really hope to see.

Be thankful you have such a brilliant convention in your hometown (or close enough that you can get to it) and don't begrudge the rest of the world getting their little piece of Stargate

Don't get me wrong, I don't begrudge the fans. I just think it sux that he didn't bother going to gatecon. AT was the only one of the 4 stars who came ,and she wasn't supposed to. I can understand why RDA can't go, but as far as I can see, there was no good reason for MS or CJ not to show up.

I'm with Cat on this one.

Down here in Australia we are always the last ones to get anything. Our eps are screened last. Our vids are released last. And it's near on impossible to find ANY merchandise at all. We have a very dedicated bunch of SG fans down under. Our conventions are always very small and now finally we have someone really wonderful going. Are we supossed to feel guilty that we're getting Michael Shanks? Well, we don't. We feel damn lucky and proud that he has decided to bother coming all the way down here.

Australia - The Lucky Country

I'll second that ShelbyS....

We Aussies do it proudly, and say it loudly: Michael Shanks is coming to town, confirmed for BOBW 12, and he is going to love our country so very very much !

As for Michael's preferences for what conventions he attends, he can get a perfect recommendation for BOBW from every other SG1 guest who have attended BOBW conventions downunder. As for what conventions he doesn't attend, well...I guess it doesn't really matter now does it !

Arthur

P.S.: BOBW had the first STARGATE SG-1 convention in the world, BOBW 6 July 1999, with Christopher Judge.

I think that the last few postings on this thread have been so very sad..... I can see it from both sides. BOBW and Australia are excited about MS visiting and there's no reason why they shouldn't feel that way. And I am sure that no one either in Vancouver or London begrudge you this visit at all. I know the Aussies are a very welcoming people, even to 'Whingeing Poms' like myself!! And I know you will give MS a much more than adequate welcome, one he will not forget.

However... I can see the point of the Gatecon attendees too... why on earth has he NEVER attended a convention in the city he lives in? Many of his staunch defenders before have said things like "Oh... Michael Shanks is a very shy, private person, he wouldn't want to attend a con because it would put him on the spot. He might have to answer some questions about himself." They have also loyally stated that as far as they are concerned he doesn't owe his fans anything at all.

I don't question the view of him being a shy retiring, private person at all, although this makes me wonder why he has taken up a profession which catapults him very much into the public eye, where his private life WILL be scrutinised, whether I or anyone else dislikes the idea or not. But to use this excuse for not appearing at a convention close to home strikes me a rather banal....especially in the light of the fact that all of a sudden... just before Gatecon, an announcement is made that he will overcome this shyness to attend a convention in Australia! And coming straight after the announcement that he is more or less leaving the series.... that he will also now attend Wolf con in London in February?

So what are we saying here? That Michael is too shy and private to attend a con in his home country, but is not too shy and private to attend one in Australia or London? If you really ARE a shy retiring and private person, you will be that anywhere in the world. You can't just be shy and private when and where it suits you...

In my opinion, this is rather extraordinary behaviour. And I think it was rather a slap in the face for those very loyal fans in the American continent, many of whom would have absolutely adored to see him and who had resigned themselves to never being able to because.....

"Michael is a shy, intensely private man ....."

I can understand the American and Canadian fans being very hurt over this.... It's not that they resent you guys in Aussie land having Michael. It's just that I think that many of them would have given their right arm for him to come to Gatecon and they are bewildered that he hasn't. I feel for all of them.

If he is such a sensitive little flower..... a shy person, then he, of all people, should understand about hurting people's feelings... after all... when a few months back a series of rumours started and HIS feelings were hurt, he wasn't so shy then about telling people how HE felt.

I don't want to upset MS fans.... and I am not a fan of his btw... however, I think that Michael is still very young, still very new to the public eye and certainly still very new to fandom. He has yet to learn how to handle people..... or to establish the necessary communication with his fanbase. And I do NOT mean that as an insult to him. Many of his fervent fans will be quick to tell me that he DOES communicate..... if this IS the case, then why has all of this not been handled better?

Michael DOES owe all of you fans something in fact. He owes it ALL to you that his popularity has risen so quickly. Therefore he owes it to you that he makes an effort.... and attending events like Gatecon are part of that.... What he perhaps needs to realise is that he has insulted the people who attend Gatecon by his seemingly deliberate avoidance of this event and their company. And this has only been heightened by the fact that it now appears that he will only attend a convention if he can travel to another country....other than Canada. No matter what his original reasons for doing this, it will seem to all and sundry that what he actually wants is a 'paid holiday' and this IS in fact what many people are thinking and feeling.

Even if they are not saying it out loud.

What it is saying to people like myself, who don't really rate him as an actor particularly, is that this young man is coming across as arrogant rather than shy... and that he has got a little bit too big for his boots.

And before all of you Daniel fans yell at me.... I am only saying that this is how people like me PERCEIVE him.... and since I am never likely to get to know him as a person... a perception, based on his past and present behaviour is ALL I have to go on.

He certainly doesn't owe his fans an intrusive in depth look at his private life..... but he does owe the fact that he has progressed his acting career to you all...... and perhaps he needs to remember that, before he actually loses every little bit of goodwill he has gained from his, up to now, adoring public.

I agree with everything Anni said. I am not complaining because MS is going to BOBW or the UK. I am only complaining because he didn't attend gatecon. It was definitely a snub to his North American fans . So maybe someone down under can ask him why he did that when you see him. I would really like to know his reason for the snub.

Get over it !

Hi,

What a pathetic response by the last two respondents ?

No actor owes anything to anyone in the world. Fans should not expect things to happen because they perceive it as the expected thing to do.

Out of the perceived decision by an actor to not attend an event, all these opinions & views are being formed, like your posting Anni which implies MS is arrogant, uncaring, losing his goodwill. Then we have Col J accusing MS of snubbing his North American fans. Let's note that MS did appear at the San Diego Comic-con recently for his first public appearance, and spent three hours signing autographs and posing for photos for fans. Every review I have read of that appearance objectively describes Michael as a most caring, gracious & hospitable person to meet.

Let's remember, actors are people, and acting roles are there jobs, and tv shows/movies etc. are their places of work ! They do this as their living. They do not however sign their life away to fans.

Lastly, as the negative comments raised all concern MS not being at a Vancouver convention recently, then maybe people should point their stick at the convention group instead of pointing it at MS !

Regards,

Arthur

I agree with your point Anni. That is all so very true.

Cat and I were just upset that everyone seemed to be holding it against Aus because MS was coming here. I understand where you are coming from now. I do agree that Michael does owe his success to all of us and the least he could have done was appear at Gatecon. I mean it was only one day, I think he does owe everyone that much.

Without fans, MS would be selling used cars and Stargate SG1 wouldn't have lasted 5 seasons ,with one more to go. The cast and crew who do manage to go to gatecon, including AT, thank their fans profusely for their success. At least they appreciate their fans. Any actor with an ounce of common sense knows he/she wouldn't make it without loyal fans, and if you treat your fans like sh*t, you lose them. I don't care if he went to San Diego. I'm only talking about gatecon.

I suppose I better get the truth out before too many rumours start spreading.

We were actually in talks with Michael for him to attend Gatecon, but the reason he did not come was to one very simple reason....

Micheal was not in any scenes being filmed the few days after Gatecon, and also had the day off on the friday before, so he decided to spend time with his daughter (who resides in the US).

So Micheal wasn't even in the country for Gatecon. We were hoping, and we were talking with his agent up to a few days before the con, and things were looking promising.

Personally, for me, family always comes before anything, so we can't begrudge Michael about his decision not to come to Gatecon... It was for family reasons and nothing else.

It is evedent that Micheal is now getting out there and meeting with the fans by going to BOBW and Wolf. I think it's great.... I think Comicon made him see that cons are actually fun things to go to.

Thank you for that info Allan. Maybe he'll be able to make it next yr then.

I hope so. It would be great.

And hopefully we can get Chris Judge back next year as well, and by then we will know who is replacing Micheal in the show, and hopefully get him as well.

Heya Allan....Great job at Gatecon this year!!!
Anyway, thanks for explaining the reason MS could not attend this years con. Curiousity being what it is I just had to know why MS would go to Aus. for a con but not across the city (I feel better now)
On another note...to all those who would DARE think that I would begrudge them MS at their local con when he did not appear at mine....obviously u can't read very well:rolleyes: . I was looking for a reason, which Allan so graciously provided.
Relax people:p
