Truly one of the best of the short-run comics and graphic novels - as anyone who's read it will agree. :)

Which were your favourite parts of it, though? And worst? And which were your favourite characters?

The ending is what wraps it all up so beautifully - and, without offering spoilers - my most favourite scene in the entire book is when a certain someone says something like, "What, do you think I am some sort of Republic serial villain, telling you my plans just for you to stop me? ... I did it 20 minutes ago." Superb. :)

As for characters - Rorschach was easily one of the most memorable - from his amazing face mask, to the actual story of his f'ed up life. Who can forget the scene with dogs?

Jon - Dr Manhatten was also pretty amazing - And his walk on Mars was pretty excellent as well, not least the fact that he stopped caring, and demanded a reason to care to save life. Nice seeing that in a supposed "hero" character.

Ozymandias was actually my favourite, though - a person who insisted in turnnig himself into some form of human superman. His history - from giving away his inheritance, to creating a corporate empire - were just superb. Also his ideas were pretty astonishing.

It was great seeing how they related to the Minute Men as well, and the parallels with our own earth - for example, the Minute Men were a form of nuclear missile. Interesting to see the metaphor used.

Was never keen no the "castaway" part of the story - I have never been entirely sure how that fitted it with it all. I figure - with hindsight - that it possibly relates to Ozy's development, but I'm not entirely sure. It's probably a wider metaphor (not least that the kid at the newstand is reading it - a story within a story, indicating a clear parallel with the reader comic relationship).

I'm not normally into clothing with symbols and insignias on - I'm not into giving free advertising, and I don;t need the peer approval of being associated with "cool things". However, one of the absolute prides of my wardrobe was - or is - a Watchmen t-shirt, which has the main cast stood facing the front in a pretty plain and unobstrusive style. Unfortunately, the t-shirt also shrank a little not long after buying it from a comics shop, so I never got to wear it that much. I'm sure I still have it at the bottom of a wardrobe somewhere, though. That's still something I'll wear if I could. :)

Anyway - Watchmen - we love you all. Heads up! :D

It's been quite a few years since I read this (mostly I recall how much I enjoyed reading it rather than plot specifics) but - yes - I agree - definitely one of the finest in its genre. Rorschach is the most memorable and three dimensional character for me. I also remember that each edition ended with clock hands moving that little bit closer to midnight (or did I just imagine that?).

I also remember it being quite dark and original in plot and content.
Damn! Now I'm going to have to hunt down a copy and read it again :D

Just like to say I recently got hold of copy, which is pretty easy to do seeing as it's available in just about every comic shop on the planet! Well now I know why, Watchmen is fantastic! The writing is superb, so good in fact that I'm hunting down some other titles in the Alan Moore back catalogue. What really blew me away was the scope and imagination, not only is it a page turner that keeps you guessing right to the end but it takes the comic book hero concept and turns it on it's head. I hear a movie based on Watchmen is in the pipeline. I'd love to see it realised on the big screen, so long as the film makers do it justice.

Well, the movie is on it's way (as far as I know) although, personally, I doubt you can ever translate Watchmen into a film without loosing something.

Favourite character is an interesting one! Was just thinking about this and was about to start a thread, but, found this and thought it could do with some new life!

Does anyone see parallels between Rorschach and Ned Stark? I suddenly thought that Rorschach seems just as burdened with honour as Ned is/was and is prepared to return the world to nuclear war in order to comply with his own 'moral code'. Granted Ned's sense of honour/justice etc is slightly more conventional but....

I loved the way Rorschach believes in a constant truth - despite hiding behind a mask - and that the ends cannot justify the means. Yet he happily breaks fingers to gain information. Is this just because he believes these people (those he harms whilst 'fighting crime') should suffer anyway for 'crimes' thay have committed, or, is it just a personal thing against Veidt, that causes him to alter his moral standpoint?

I hope this will still make sense in the cold ight of day:eek:!

Cant wait to see this movie. I really hope that it does the work justice. It does not need to be as good (impossible, IMHO), but I would be happy if it tries to at least tell teh same story in the same way, even if it does not succeed as mightily.

Looks great!

Let's hope the whole movie can live up to the trailer.:)

I tell you what, I was not the biggest fan of the graphic novel. I'd heard so much about i but when I read it, it just didn't do much of anything for me. But I've been following the progress of this film, and the trailer does indeed look spectacular. I'm keen to see Snyder's interpretation here...

Well my favourite character from the book is Silk Spectre, because at the end of the novel she is looking to get back into super hero thing. She makes the remark about having a more practical costume. It just resonates for me and links back to her father, the Comedian, and his costume change.

I just went through this book in 2 back-to-back sittings and I think it's one of the most awesome books written, superhero or not. The story resonates the way a China Mieville novel does. You can see the actions of the characters have genuine consequences, affecting both them and the people around. I'm simply stunned by the awesomeness of it all.

I haven't read the Graphic Novel but I have heard nothing but good about it... here's a link to the trailer for the new fillum...
