Watchmen

Superb! Looks fairly true to the source material, and there s me trying to stay cynical about the whole thing!

I'm excited about the movie, if it ever gets released. The choice to not dilute the content to go for a pg-13 rating has me pretty confident that it won't be horrible.

Well it's set for a March 2009 release, so hopefully it will arrive more or less on time.

As long as all the legal wrangling stop in time, then the film should come out on time. I do find it highly suspicious that the people claiming to have ownership waited until the film was completely finished before going to court. Cynical? Moi? :)

It was fantastic. I really enjoyed the view of the superheroes and their lives outside of the mask and everything. It's an interesting angle and the movie looks great and surprisingly loyal.

It's one of the best comics, superhero or otherwise, I've ever read. Alan Moore has never disappointed me. His other work in superhero comics, like Miracleman and Supreme, are quite outstanding too.

So - anyone seen the film yet? I've got next Tuesday off work, so think I'll head to the cinema then, and see whether the reviews have been right...

So long ago it is now but a faded memory. Well, ok, so it was Monday. Damn fine film.

i was very let down by the movie. It looks amazing on the trailer but i was expecting more. People who have read the comic are said to enjoy it more but i havent and like i said, was let down

I enjoyed the movie very much, and I haven't yet seen the graphic novel. Am now very tempted to track it down and have a look.
The movie was great, very dark, good character development and plot twists, although I gather that is due to the source material.
I recommend seeing it.

I think the film has ruined the comic. It certainly demonstrated one thing: what works on the page doesn't necessarily work on the screen. The film is too faithful to its material - comic dialogue just sounds silly in a film.

Thats why i wont see the movie. Its not just any comic story that becomes a movie. Its not a straightforward superhero tale.

I will read Alan Moore version and be happy with that.

People seem too keen to compare a movie to the book or comic on which the idea is based. Of course its gonna be different, its a totally different medium. With many films we are expected to disengage our brain and have fun. And thats fine! Look at Marley and Me. The film is a comic romp to put fun-loving bums in seats- but its based on a true story which my other half read but stopped because it was so annoying. Not the dog but the owners not having a clue. Anyway, onto Watchmen. I want to see it and will then decide if I like it. Never even knew it was based on a comic as I never read those as a kid.

Er, no. That's the whole point. Zack Snyder effectively used the comic as his storyboards. He didn't translate the comic to film. He shot the comic, frame by frame. And that's why it doesn't really work as a film.

Am confused. Isn't a comic a thing on paper and a film something you watch? Surely they're totally different things. ;)

Every line of dialogue in the comic is in the film, every frame of the comic is in the film. They comic has not been "translated" into a film. And since the two media are different, what works for one doesn't work for the other. Which is why Watchmen doesn't actually work very well as a film.

That's not strictly true, they've cut out parts of the comic, and changed some of the minor plot-lines and not to spoil it, but the ending is different, so the set up for that is different. Plus the whole Black Freighter stuff is not in the film, although there is the promise of releasing it on the special DVD as an extra which I think will be animated. Also, for some reason they changed one scene I think, from Rorschach to Nite-Owl II but as of yet no one I know can tell me why they changed it. I'm sure there are other changes as well.

I don't think the film has ruined the comic. It's still there and hasn't gone anywhere and it won't spoil my enjoyment of the comic. I Am Legend was not the book, but the film was just ok as a seperate entity.

Sin City was done, line for line, panel for panel.

A good part of it was taken from the graphic novel, but there was also things that were very different from it including the ending. To think a film or anything can ruin the original piece of art it is based on. Because the Watchmen comic is brilliant enough to where nothing can ruin it. If you think something can ruin this fantastic comic, then your insane. Fantastic movie based on a brilliant book.
