Well, for someone who believes the show is escapist nonesense, you sure spend a lot of time (703 postings since March 2001 )writing about SG1. Why is it that when someone disagrees with what another person feels or thinks about the show, they immediately come up with "It's just a show, it's not real." Of course I know it's not real.
Oh my dear, dear lady! Of COURSE I do..... just like EVERYONE on this forum does......
Don't you see? Can't you see? I need escapist nonsense as much, if not more than most.... because I have been MADE to come face to face with the horrors of this world and the dreadful things one human does to another, often willingly. These kind of horrors that NO human being should be made to face... or witness. They live in my dreams, both waking and sleeping, even to the point where I can see the faces of those who died and suffered while I am standing at the kitchen window washing the dishes.
Do you know what a 'thousand yard stare' is? If not, go and ask or just look at a Vietnam veteran or a veteran of any war. Ask them what thoughts go through their mind when they sometimes just hear a couple of notes of a song, or small whiff of some half forgotten smell which whisks them back to a time they would much rather forget had ever happened. Back to a video which constantly plays and replays in their head whenever these tiny little things restimulate them.
Do you know what is is like to kill another human being, and actually see their face as they die? I sincerely hope not Norita, because truly that is the stuff that nightmares are made of.
Yes Stargate is escapist nonsense...... and I thank god for it....I thank god for the fact that I still, somewhere deep inside of me, am able to watch it and transcend myself into make believe land. And come back out the other side and STILL talk in a rational manner. Because I know lots of people like me..... who have walked the walk AND talked the talk and can hardly put one foot in front of the other because they are so traumatised by the things they have seen and done.
And yes.... we do post on the list because we care...... But we still need to get the whole thing in perspective. Mourn all you wish....
And believe me.... I do not JUST refer to the events of 11 September as atrocious as those events were and which hit me in a most personal way. Things like that have been happening all over the world for centuries and mostly they have gone unnoticed by the so-called civilised societies of this world. It was left to soldiers like me to try to fight for the right of all to live peacefully and then struggle to pick up the pieces of the civilians that we impacted afterwards. And we have never ever received any credit for that. And it has been that way since Rudyard Kipling sat and penned his poems during the latter centuries.
"You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!"
Rudyard Kipling (Extract from the poem 'Tommy')
Now will ANYONE please suggest something that might make a simple idea for Daniel to leave, or ascend....? And I think Hammond was an excellent replacement choice myself, because the poor bugger never gets out of that damn HQ.
