Gatecon

God..... you people do my head in....... Stop making assumptions about everything.

<sigh> I did not get 'called' for any kind of behaviour in any way. I was behaving myself perfectly. What I received from the Gatecon staff was rudeness even after extremely polite enquiry. Not all of them I admit, but quite a few.....and I was not the only one who received this treatment. If you like I can point you in the direction of a few people with the same complaints.

Track you down? Who are you? Where were you when I was wandering around looking for folk?

As for going to the toilet.....actually AdministratorWo, or whoever you are.... no....I don't think that allowing an actor to go to the toilet on their own while the rest of us stand outside crossing our legs IS appropriate, okay?

I personally would never go up to any damn actor and intrude on their privacy....any more than I would expect them to do the same to me. For god's sake, they have to pee, I have to pee....we ALL have to pee. We all go into separate cubicles and do the business....unless you're a bloke and use the urinal.

So they have more right to privacy than the rest of us? I don't think so.

And please DO NOT EVER call me or anyone else a liar unless you have evidence to prove that my experience was a lie. When I said about the Gatecon Staff being rude I meant and stand by every thing I said. I spoke from personal experience.

I don't know who the heck you are, but you have just made me pretty much angry with all of this.

I made my feelings known to Allen and I did so in a fashion which suggested that there may be things he could do to alleviate the situation for others or perhaps change things that may have needed changes. I do NOT need to explain myself to you or anyone else.

Dammit..... I bloody HATE it when people get me this mad on a Sunday evening. Now I have to go away and try to chill out!

 :angryfire  :disgust:

Right after the 2001 con there was plenty of stuff posted here about events and things that happened. I think some were read and "absorbed" by the staff, but nothing was announced really as what would change. Back in December it was way too early to expect that. Other discussions of stuff was squashed like bugs on a windshield.

Thing is all the admin can't be everywhere at the same time. They assume and trust people they hardly know to behave as they're told in the morning briefing. And sometimes using attendees who "pay their way to the con" in the volunteer process can backfire. I'm just puzzled why people who sound educated and reasonable on these boards are "dissed" as rabid and unreasonable when they observe stuff. Unless when convos go into private mode all hell breaks loose, that is.

I think the VIP folks let the VIP-ness go to their heads a tiny bit. A bit from Jurassic Park comes to mind. VIP's didn't earn the abilities to be VIP, they bought a higher priced ticket. That's it. A few people thought that red-striped ID tag is a ticket to God-ness. Making a person who thinks like that a volunteer is what caused a few raised eyebrows and shortened tempers.

I still say go to the con, but have alternate tourist-type plans as back up for the event the con atmosphere sinks your boat. I'm still of the mind that if it's your first convention ever in your whole life, enjoy that before deciding to be on call to aid other guests. Come to understand what being a con guest is like. Volunteer if you're feeling inclined; previous volunteer experience in some sort of event or charity 5K race would surely help keep your feet on the ground and the right job duties in mind during your four hours on the floor. Be a people person first because you'll be dealing with people so intent on going to the con they can be irrational. They can be rude! They (and I mean the guests who feel wronged in the scheme of things) can be harder to control than a cheerful drunk on St. Pats day.

Personally, if I ran a con with high-profile, semi-famous actors, I'd hire Anni and she would give the volunteers the morning briefing. I've always loved briefings from people that talk about actors peeing and drooling on pillows. She's got a great point that they fart and put on one pants leg at a time just like the average man. Heck, she'd talk to the uppity-type actors in the green room too and knock any holier-than-thou attitude out of them for good measure. :D But that's not here or there, I'm not a high-profile TV series producer-writer yet.

Anni...

Now you know how you've made us feel from reading your orig post....

And I thot my sig. would have explained who I am... but if not, here you go...
My name is Ladytree* or Carol.. I am the Volunteer Coordinator for Gatecon 2002 (2001, 2000)... I wear at least 2 different badges naming me as such & also shirts labeling me as Staff... and that's why I said, I wished you had tracked me down...
I'm presuming again, that you are not coming to this years con but if I'm wrong & you are coming, please hunt me down, over the PA system if you must, & I'll keep you tied to me & introduce you to any & everybody I can.... you'll be too busy having fun to worry about not having any fun... (yes I typed that the way I wanted, hehe)

:alienooh:

Well people, this was a very interesting, comprehensive and thought provoking thread.
Thank you Anni :smilej:

Star'man'ac :smokin:

Carol...... it wasn't ALL the staff. I could point fingers directly at the folk who were nasty.....but there were quite a few who weren't so much downright rude as very dismissive when I asked them anything. For instance, I asked one of the Gatecon staff at one of the doors into the auditorium if she could tell me what was happening next in the programme so I could plan my attendance and while I understand that she might not have been informed, what I couldn't excuse was her reply. She stepped back and looked at me up and down and then said "What are you asking me for? I don't know. Now will you PLEASE move away from this door? This is ONLY for VIPs, not Superquads!" And this was just one of them.

It certainly wasn't the hectic round of enjoyment I had been led to believe prior to coming, that's for sure.

So after a few reactions like that I finally gave up and spent my time preparing for my interview and looking for apartments or familiarising myself with a city that I am going to be staying in for a couple or three months.

I can't attend the con because of work commitments, but I thank you for your kind offer.

AdministratorWu on the other hand suggested that I was lying about my experiences.....although why on earth I should is anyone's guess, since I was hardly likely to gain anything by lying after the event. This made me cross as I am not the kind of person who lies about things. In fact I'm a very direct sort of person who says what she thinks and tells it like it is.

Ask CynVision!

BTW Gawsh!!!!

Thanks for the compliment Cyn......much appreciated. I would have liked to have met you, so I am sorry in that instance that I can't attend Gatecon this year. Never mind....perhaps another year?

:D

I'm praying I can make it back. I need a job and I need a job that will let me go for that week. Once I got involved in Gatecon in my small way, I'd be sore upset if I didn't make it and if other members of the skit cast didn't make it back there again. Both Roxie and Sandman are offering to help my room costs this round and everthing. Who wouldn't want to come back just for that little one hour of performance time when people want you back a year in advance?!

Anni, I felt that if we shake off the few instances of rudeness the con is the place to meet people intently "in to" Stargate as friends and coworkers cannot be. It's the only place you can and do talk Stargate for hours on end. That's highly suductive. I was in the Quad section and people tended to be grateful to have made it to the con at all and were keeping in mind the terrible events of the week before. That modified a lot of feelings and behavior. Maybe for others, the con was a desprate escape from reality and they let that control them.

The core of the Gatecon organizers are responsible and just as enthustastic as I can be about returning. But by the time they're in Van, they're stretched eight ways to Sunday trying to keep a lid on things. This year might be better. The hotel will know what to expect this round...

But what happens at GC?

Hey everyone...

As a big fan of SG (I recently bought a region free DVD player just so I could buy Season II DVD's!) I am trying to find out more about what actually "happens" at Gatecon.

The website is sketchy at best. I know about the auction, some parties and the bus tour, but are there any organized events where you can learn more about the making of the show, perhaps some technical efx aspects, show previews in HDTV, or talks you can go to that might tell about the future of Stargate, movies, and spinoffs?

I wouldn't be going to actually "meet" the characters, would be nice if so but I don't want to stand in line that long to do it. I would just want to go to get the latest SG info, maybe hear some tales from the actors, writers, and buy cool SG stuff.

If anyone knows of an online "schedule" of what happens at what time at the con, can you please post a link?

Thanks. I'd be coming from CA so this isn't exactly next door!

Tom

Well, Tom, if you go to the Gatecon site there's some info on what's going on. I do have my own webiste that has pictures accompanied by commentary of everything that happens during the con. There's also a list of links to lots of other very cool sites to check out. My link is http://kimsadventures.com Just click on the gatecon link and that'll take you to the gatecon pages and all the info you'll ever need on Gatecon conventions. Hope this helps.

There's a lot of great tips here. Thanks.
I'm going to Gatecon by myself, only because it's too expensive for my friends - I come from the UK.

Until I read this board, I wasn't sure what to expect. Didn't know if it would be like any of the other conventions I've been to.

Should (hopefully) be fun, if anyone will talk to me!

See ya September, kids.

I'll chat with ya in September Dr. Jackson. Although I currently live in Vancouver I am from Belfast, so you can fill me in on all the latest happenings at home :)

Welcome to ascifi

Dr. Jackson- I'll talk to ya too, just introduce yourself and I'd be more than happy to chat and fill you in on all the con info you need. If I have it that is. I have been to the other 2 cons and will be volunteering at this one again. I love to meet new people and make new friends, that's what it's all about. Will you be going to the cocktail party and banquet? You have to have VIP tickets to do that. If so then we could meet up there and chat. If not, there's plenty of other places to do the meet and greet. Are you going to Sekh's Party? That's another fun thing to do. It's on wednesday before the con starts, a few cast members show up and it's just a big fun party. You should do that if you can come in a day early. I actually have an extra ticket I might need to sell off. I believe it's 30.00 American. Anyway, it's cool that you're going and you shouldn't feel shy about saying hi to people. The most they can do is be rude or ignore you and that's their problem not yours. I've found most people to be very nice and friendly. Oh and the hot tub/pool is a great place to hang out at after the days activities and relax and meet people. There's also 3 restaurants/lounges to go to and a great pub down the street to unwind in, think it's called "the Foggy Dew". Great drinks, cool atmosphere, outside cafe, very nice. Anyway, check out my website if you'd like to see more of what goes on at the cons. It's http://kimsadventures.com/gatecon

After looking at all those pictures you'll know what I look like and my friends so you should have no problem finding us to say hello. See ya there!!! SS

Gatecon/Sekh's Party

sha'uri's smile-
Well, my plane gets in on the afternoon of the 11th, so I might see if I can make it to the party.
I'll make sure to keep an eye out for you, cos I've had a look at your site and know what you look like. If this Con is as much fun as the pics (and comments) make the last one look, then this should be a blast.

One question, is Sekh's party in the same place as the Con, and if it's not, is there some sort of Yellow Brick Road I can follow to it?:rolly2:

Sekh's Party

Dr. Jackson- hope you had a look at the link. Thanks guys for helping out with that. If you haven't, it's at a nearby restaurant and it depends what kind of ticket you buy as to if you get transportation to and from the event. Some people have cars and may be able to drive you and I'm sure there's taxi's. I thought all the tickets that had transport with them were sold. If so and you'd like to get one fo those I do believe I have one for sale. A friend had me buy a few for her and a friend and her mother but now her mother won't be coming most likely so we can sell her ticket. Let me know if you're interested. I'm glad you checked out my site and know what I look like, but, it would help if I could see what you look like then there's a better chance we'd notice each other. People never look the same in person, well, sometimes anyway. With me you never know, I change my hair and clothes all the time. It WAS alot of fun and believe me you'd have to try real hard not to enjoy yourself. well, gotta run, see ya soon!!!

OMG - you people are making it hard to say no to going. I found out about Gatecon a couple months ago and have been debating going every since. I used to attend ST cons regularly (about 4/yr) but stopped about 2 yrs ago because it was just getting old. The same people are at each con and I had a history (nothing juicy to speak about) that I just kept having to explain. My all-time favorite con was always Toronto Trek because I found the people attending (Canadians) so refreshingly friendly. So since Gatecon is also a Canadian con I'm considering it merely because of that. I really want to go but this will be my first SG con and I won't know anyone so it will be kindly weird. Even when I started doing ST cons I was introduced to it by someone deep into fandom, so I just hung out with her and ALL her friends. I'm just worried that since I won't know anyone I'll revert back into my shy self and won't have any fun.

From what I can tell there will be a lot of people there who haven't been before. It will be my first time at a con, never mind a Gatecon. But I think it will be great - even though I am pretty shy in those situations too.

If someone comes up with a way to connect and ID people at the hotel to online systems, it would be fun to meet. My attendance is still up in the air. I bought the Sekh's party ticket long in advance but I'm still not employed in a job that makes any sort of headway on making rent let alone quad pass, airfare and hotel. In fact, the local food workers union wants money. I need a new full time job.

First timer

This will be my first, possibly only GateCon. Attended a small TREK con in my city over ten years ago. Have registered to volunteer--always want to help at any event I attend.

Hope to convince hubby to join me for vacation either before or after con weekend. (He's not a fan, but we need a break from the hot Texas summer!)

Thanks for all of your comments above, they have helped me realize what to expect. *makes note to pack the GOOD camera with built-in zoom*

Welcome all!

Hi! I'll be happy to meet with anybody from this board or from www.gaters.net. I'll be wearing a name tag with "xst" on it and perhaps a second tag with Gaters or Ascifi on it!! See you all!
