I have always strongly felt that apart from Apophis, the deaths of the System Lords, or any of the Goa'uld were merely just a plot foil to show us all how wonderful SG1 are. I know that most fans are obsessional about the SG1 team and I understand the need to develop them. But did it have to be at the cost of the well roundedness of the show?
The writers insisted and still insist on encouraging the "Rah rah rah, SG1...Rah rah rah America" thing. Heru Ur, Cronus, Hathor, Tanith were all casualties of the writers' desire to insist that goodies always come out on top. Unfortunately this isn't always the case but it makes for comfortable viewing. The baddy's dead, god's (the human god of course) in his heaven and all's right with the world.
Everyone is always so desperate for SG1 to win the day that sometimes rationality flies out of the window and we end up with Heru Ur fizzling out like a dud firework. When he was killed, I thought...."That's it? This build up of him being a bad baddy in a couple of other episodes and he went out without so much as a whimper? This is pathetic."
In my opinion this is why the deaths of these so called powerful System Lords were so pathetically easy and so casually carried out. Even Cronus' death, which was perhaps dealt with more in depth was used as a most transparent and pointless plot foil for Teal'c desire for revenge.
When SG1 started decimating the Jaffa like they were nothing and magically and miraculously contriving the deaths of the Goa'uld left right and centre is when I started to lose real interest in the show. Because I'm not a fan of butch, techobabbling Sam, twitching, grimacing, gurning Jack, choir boy Daniel and strong silent Teal'c there was very little left for me to take an interest in.
I'd love to be interested in Anubis, except that watching the episodes with him in are about as exciting as watching paint dry.
When are they going to remove that cloak and unveil their masterpiece or when SG1 finally kill him, and they probably will, will there just be an empty cloak on the ground? (A la Dracula, when he fizzled to dust and just leaves the cloak)
Perhaps I'll never know, because I may well have shot my TV screen out in sheer frustration over the downward spiral of a show that could have been an amazing piece of Sci Fi.
