Yes.......but surely a wormhole would have travelled through interdimensional densities like a sun before then? The SGC has visited alot of planets and I find it hard to believe that this kind of effect hasn't happened before...

(and then theres always the idea that the writers didn't think of this before...)

Actually I agree with what your saying that elements are piggybacked all the time, what I don't understand is the lack of commen occurance if this is correct? Unless in this incidence there was a particularly unusual element deposit in within the limits of the heliopause that the wormhole passed through. It would have had to have been fairly close to the sun (or 'a' sun) for a magnetic field to pick up so much of it. (if you assume that it was collected through s deposit similar to a Van Allen radiation belt, and there was a higher incidence of particles due to increased solar activity)

Didn't Sam say that a normal DHD won't dial if it knows that is going to happen. They got a wormhole to connect because they bypassed the safeguards with their dialling computer.

what hick just said - what if some original "cold dials" were because the wormhole would travel too close to a sun?

Then the cold dialling program would get a wormhole established when it could. Do they really just let the stargate dial on its own? It must have some restrictions to dial because they wouldn't want an outgoing connection at 2am would they.

From viewing, I would say it takes 30-40 seconds to test any given dialling address. I think it is reasonable to assume that in any given day, although the gate MAY be used 24-7 for incoming teams, outgoing ones will only go out during "daytime working hours". Either way, between say 8am and 6pm the gate is probably only in use for 10 minutes each hour (pure supposition).

Therefore, 60-75 addresses an hour can be attempted, which is perhaps 500-750 per day, that had previously been found "dead".
