I've seen a reaction to Porthos, but only good words about Archer himself.

I like Porthos, I think it's a clever idea for different kinds of stories (I have changed my mind on this.)

I liked the scene in 'Cold Front' when Porthos is concerned for Archer's wellbeing. A cat could never react like that. Data's cat, Spot, was only used to bring elements of Data's character out. I would like to see more of Porthos.

I want to see different kinds of stories made, I'm sick of Transporter accidents/ Holodeck failures/ warp core breaches/ technobabble yadda yadda yadda, powerful aliens in overwhelming odds who are now brought to their knees by the might of one starfleet vessel.

If a dog is one way of giving a different angle, then so be it.

No, really, the dog brings different possibilities into the story that you couldn't otherwise have. Just as a for instance, Archer could talk to Porthos and tell him about his worries and troubles as a captain, he could say things he feels, that he couldn't tell the crew, because it's only a dog. You couldn't do that on the other series. (I can just imagine Janeway: "Hello Wall!" (apologies to Shirley Valentine.)

I'm not explaining this very well, but surely someone can understand what I mean?

I do know what you mean Dave. Being a dog owner you do tend to 'talk' to your dog. It acts as some sort of therapy. An animal cat or dog can pick up vibes about the way you're feeling. Plus it shows a soft side to a person having a pet around. It is a pity that Porthos is left in his quarters all the time when it could be possible to include him in some of the storylines.

chinchillas are GREAT pets! (yes, i have one)

tho - they tend to eat wires and such -- but they're soft and fluffy -

but - they need a lot of space -

starship - not a good place for chinchillas - they'd get lost - or into trouble --

But you didn't say about the hate campaigns on other boards. I've personally only seen good things about him, apart from his management style being weak. I thought people loved him, especially all his fans that followed him from Quantum Leap.

I just want to see good stories, with good believable characters, does it really matter what kind of pet they have?
