'Future Guy' will return in Season 2.

Actors usually like to find out as much about their characters as possible, but James Horan knows no more than the viewers about the identity of the shadowy figure from the future.

"Well I don't know much about the mystery man from the future, except that he's a mystery man from the future," Horan told Cinescape Online. "Kinda sounds like a bad guy, especially from the latest script I got, the cliffhanger final episode of the first season."

In addition to appearing in the season finale, 'Shockwave,' the time traveller will return next year. "I'm also coming back for the beginning of the second season, so maybe more will be revealed about him then," he said. "Hey, I'm hoping they stretch this out, and I become the Q of Enterprise."

Horan said he is aware of the rumours that he might be a Romulan. "The fans are telling me they speculate that he's a Romulan, because the Romulans were involved with time travel at one, uh, time or another. It's so confusing. So, that's all I know; I'm glad to be working, and pleased to be a part of this new series."

I know there's something of an embargo on crossovers on Enterprise but I think Future Guy is (wait for it)... human, perhaps even Starfleet. I'm not going to go as far as to say he's Braxton (that cheerless time cop) but he could be trying to change history for the benefit of his present (like Braxton in Future's End).

Anyone else got a theory, mine's a little prozaic for my own taste. - James (not QWXY)

Who do you think ‘Future Guy’ is?

The mysterious, enigmatic and shadowy figure from the future that seems to be controlling the ‘Temporal Cold War’ (played by James Horan) has been seen in the episodes ‘Broken Bow’ and ‘Shockwave’. Fans have begun calling him ‘Future Guy’ but who is he really? “Is he a hard-ass? Is he a commander?†asked Horan at his audition. “We don’t know,†was the reply.

All we can be sure of is that he is Humanoid, or at least he appears to be humanoid to his Suliban partners in crime. (He is listed in the credits as ‘Humanoid Figure’.) Even James Horan knows nothing about him or his race, only that he wants to manipulate the past using the Suliban. In ‘Cold Front’ the man with nebulous aims is seen inside a temporal chamber, and he says he is angered by the fact that the Klingon Empire is intact.

My suggestions are:
(i) A Romulan agent, unhappy with the timeline in which Earth won the Romulan Wars, and who would like to rewrite history. The Romulans would have the most to gain, if the Klingon Empire were to fall during this time period.
(ii) A Vorgon criminal from the 27th Century. We saw them at work in ‘Captain’s Holiday’ TNG, when they stole a Tox Uthat (quantum phase inhibitor) with enormous weapons potential, but we were never party to their reasons.
(iii) A Federation Time Cop: Who said that he isn’t a good guy. In ‘Cold Front’, Silik the Suliban did help Archer, and prevented the Enterprise NX-01 from being destroyed. On the other hand, the crewmember (Daniels) that revealed that he was an agent from the 27th Century could have been lying. Since we don’t yet know ‘Future Guys’ motives, why can’t he be altering the Timeline back to its original course? Possibly, his ‘ends justify the means’; he only seems to be changing history, whereas he is really keeping it on track.
(iv) Something completely new that we cannot possibly speculate at present, because Braga and Berman haven’t even written it: The Chronomage of Andromeda, or the Temporal Power Lords.

I like the idea of the Federation Tme Cop...

I think the 'Captain Braxton' associate is the most likely, but I would like it to be something stunningly different, something that no fan could have even contemplated.

I know that the answer is already probably in some fan-fiction somewhere, because there are only a finite number of possibilities that it could be, but if they are going to keep us hanging on with this storyline, it better had be worth the wait!!!!

I'm not sure exactly 'what' he is -- but he is an interesting character ---

I like James Horan - and I'm hoping we get something really cool out of this storyline -----

I'm tired of bland, over-done stories that don't go anywhere --

Has anyone ever stopped to think he could be a Vulcan? If he knows in the future Earth is the home of The Federation and the Humans will eventually catch up to them in tech. maybe it is their attempt at holding the Humans back? Just a thought. :) Maybe he is hoping for a Federation run through Vulcan and they still have the Humans on a bit of a leash?

Hi Bota99,

A Vulcan unhappy with the Vulcans alliance with Humans... wouldn't that make him a Romulan sympathiser??

I think it would be more likely to be an actual full Romulan, but an interesting idea.

We'll just have to wait and see... but we can continue to speculate

I agree with the possibility he could be a Vulcan manipulating the timeline for his own purposes, or a Maquis (sp?) agent, or even one of those guys from the top secret department of Starfleet in DS9. A Romulan is probably the most likely candidate, IMHO.

Rick Berman says....

In Octobers 'Star Trek Monthly' Rick Berman is asked if he and Brannon Braga have determined yet what race he is from.

Which race? Which race in the future? Yes, we have a relatively good idea who's messing with things. And I ain't gonna tell ya who it is!
I will say that we have it in our heads, but there are variations on it that would give us different spins as it plays itself out. So it's not totally locked down, but we have a pretty good idea of who's doing what and the different ways it could go.

I'm pretty sure it's a romulan, but I'm hoping its something completley unexpected.....just to throw off us fans!! :rolly2:

I like the idea of the raiders who stole the Tox Uhtat in Captains Holiday. However, since we don't know their motives, we can only speculate as to why they'd want to manipulate the timeline

What about the Vulcan (played by Gary Graham) in the first ep - he has been in a couple of other eps and boy does he really hate the humans getting out there, he seems to want to do all he can to rein them back in - I know he is not from the future, but that doesn't mean it isn't a future version of him - one thats already seen whats gone before

Probably not likely at all but I like the idea........

Yep, me too. I just can't see how he could be a Vulcan. What would breaking up the Klingon Empire have to do with Vulcan's. Unless it's believed that the Vulcans want to control the quandrant - which would go against the established character of the "normal" Vulcan.

I bet it's either a Romulan or a rogue Human.

Didn't the storywriters say something, when writing the Pilot script about 2-3 years ago, about going back to the original universe complete with original villians? Thought I heard that - maybe not.

Has 'Future Guy' been seen since S1? Has he shown up in S2? (yes, use the spoiler boxes for those who might not want to know) --

I haven't been watching, so I haven't seen him since Ep 1 (was he in other eps in S1?)

It's clear that future guy can communicate from the future but not actually transfer anything solid (given as the reason that the Suliban are so desperate to get their hands on the "real" time machine device in Shockwave). This rules out future guy being either from 27th century or Braxton (unless, I suppose, he has become stranded with only limited equipment)

I'd guess future guy is from a "nearer" future.

Hmm.. ok, when you change the present, the future is changed right?!

So, basically.. future guy comes back to try and change the way his galaxy is.. but if he did come earlier than the good time guy's, surely he changed the future BEFORE the good time guy's existed, and therefore they wouldnt be around to try fix time..

Damn this is confusing..

That kind of 'fixed-timeline theory' is only one possible theory of time.

Another is that there are an infinite number of alternative realities possible. (think of "Sliders" or "Parallels" TNG episode) So, if 'future guy' changes the present, the 'good time-guys' timeline still exists somewhere, but the one that 'future guy' now follows is no longer the same.

So, where does that leave us? We have already seen 4 'Trek' series that were set in the original timeline. Archer and Co. would not be following that timeline any longer.

So, which timeline is the real one?

Well, they all are!

So, 'good time-guy' could still come back from an alternative reality and change the new timeline.

Now that IS confusing!

Dude, youve just gone WAY over my head...

But, if they are from a parallel universe, how can the good-time guys (makes them sound like male hookers dont it) come to our universe.. wouldnt that not only screw up the time-line, but also.. well.. ermm.. here goes:

If theyre an offshoot of another universe's (parallel..) time-line, thjen not only do they not exist in our time-line.. but they dont even exist in our universe.. souldnt all theyre data be irrelevant.. to do with theyre universe, not ours..

Damn.. i hope the script-writers dont see this.. or it could make the show a whole load more complicated..

I honestly think it will be something much simpler -- a Romulan, (or maybe a Borg!)

I agree with Polymath about why it's probably not Braxton or the Vorgons, and any kind of alternative reality plot would alienate too many viewers. It would be like the 'it's all been a dream' storyline in 'Dallas'.
